It's insecurity and a battle to regain the upper hand after a momentary -- very momentary, very slight -- slip. Then she says something that seems cold but, in fact, is tragic. Nichelle Nichols made real moments no matter how exploitative or limiting the material. Someone who can make you notice such tiny gestures in a scene like this can handle anything from Shakespeare to Wilson. Rest in peace and brilliant acting, indeed.
