I always pictured the 'dark forest' as Laura's deep despair and the rising to a crescendo as building elation whenever there was fleeting normality iin her life. That then drops back into despair.
Tom Waits once said that music, songs have a mind, a soul. They‘re searching the ether until they find someone who they want to be sung by. Angelo was meant to bring this mood, this score to life. Pure magic. No one around who cannot envision the owls lurking on dead branches in the woods, turning their heads. Laura‘s eyes so beautiful and sad when she was in the woods. This is art. Nothing short of art.
A couple of days ago, I went to a live homage interpretation of the soundtrack of Twin Peaks. After they played Laura Palmer's theme, I started talking with this random stranger about Angelo. We talked about how much of a genius he was, we cheered to his memory. The man created a theme so hauntingly beautiful that still made us shiver even three decades later. Rest in peace Angelo.
