There are some good slow (24 hr.) cure urethane paints out there now, I got some for my bumpers on my RZR and I swear it is tougher than any powder coat!. (about $30 a pint) plenty enough for a hull.
One of the best videos for the process I have ever seen. Which is better for durability Gator Glide, or Super Slick? I know it is mostly a subjective opinion but I bet there are good points and bad for each.
Can you apply gator glide over a repair that has Epoxy Fairing Compound material on it or will it peel? or is it better to use polyester fairing compound? Thanks
Thank you, your videos are very helpful! I have a small crack on a ski that I am wanting to fiberglass over with mat fiberglass and resin and I was wanting to gator glide the entire bottom after the repair, so epoxy faring over the glass then the gator glide correct?@@chattanoogafiberglass
@@bigboyben6 yes. Sand e tire hull p180, blow it off with air, clean with alcohol and clean shop towel before application. Repair area needs to be sanded p60 then lay up glass, grind and sand p60 then p80 then apply fairing
That measurement business is just a bunch of bullshit they use to negotiate you down. Give the fuggers a price and stand on it. They can take it or leave it. There are not that many people that know how to do the work. You have much more control than you realize. They are vultures and need to be treated as such. You really don't need them in the marine industry. There is plenty of work without working too cheap or jumping through their silly as whoops like a circus pony !
Just started my journey with fiberglass! I want to use it to modify a small shower pan for van build. Thsnks for covering some of the things i need to know. Things went beyond my knowledge when you were mixing the nonskid, but i gained! I will be shortening the pre-existing pan, and i need to add an elevated “pedestal “ for a cassette commode. A question i have is how to prep the plastic of the pan to accept the fiberglass? Is a rough sand all i need?
Some of these Ski’s are not the easiest to repair and you do great work on them. I repair and make surfboards in Australia and also do plenty of boat work and can honestly say the learning curve with repairing some of the jet Skis especially the Yamahas has been steep to say the least ! I subscribed to your channel a while back and have definitely used some of your techniques on work I’ve done here so thank you and keep up the good work
@@chattanoogafiberglass Looking forward to it. Been binge watching all your videos. I have a hull side with piling damage and trying to gather as much info for a diy repair.
@@chattanoogafiberglass sorry my english is not good .i juste need to know how much did you put in paint gun to do juste one layer ? I undestund one quart is enought to do one ski but i need how much to put in gun paint for one layer .iam really sorry to bother you
Start with a base color, see what pigments work. That way you don’t waste 6oz or more of Gelcoat if you add a wrong pigment and get an outcome that can’t be reversed.
I can do that. When I have another one come in and I have to paint it I’ll make a video. Almost the same process just sand the hull p600, base and clear or polyurethane paint like awlcraft 2000!
I have some experience painting car parts so I'll be using a hvlp gun, since this is a project ski am I able to use a single stage black on the bottom? I've seen that companies selling a epoxy primer looking for something simple. Also is just a scuff fine or do i have to sand all the way down like your gator glide video? thanks@@chattanoogafiberglass
The Yamaha hull structure requires protection from paint or some coating in order for it not to delaminate . There are many benefits to doing this type of coating over paint. Durability is the main reason, it's slick so it makes it 10 x easier to slide off a stand onto and off of a trailer, it's easy to repair, and it looks great/easy to keep clean. Still not recommended to beach, but beaching is much less destructive than paint.
excellent content very well explained . I was wondering during the glass repair when building back the laminate do you start with the smallest piece of matt and get progressively bigger with each layer or the opposite way around largest to smallest it seems to be a bit of a controversy which is the best way for some reason. Also did you use chopped strand for the repair and what ounce weight would be a good choice for a repair like this. what gun and tip size do you find works the best for you spraying gel . Looking forward to more videos
Subscribe to the channel. I have 2 videos dropping Christmas night or eve.. depending on how long editing takes. On the repair, it depends on the damage, personally I like to start large, and deeper sections add a couple small layers and sandwich with a large sheet over. Vinylester resin. 1.5oz chop strand mat, I spray gel with a 1.4 tip and my 3m performance gun. You don’t need a $800 gun set up unless you spray every day like me, my best spray jobs have been with the purple harbor freight gun. Reduce gel with MEK substitute
They are making so much money they have lost touch with who they are and what made them. Just bought a truck for 140k. Smh, I unsubscribed a while back
What’s wrong with the goonsquad? They can’t fix their own problems I see this every time they start a build but they never finish it there content is really going down the toilet!
