Let me get this straight, Chris Hani was arrested on 2 occasions in Botswana, once in 1963 (before Botswana gained independence & when the police force was still headed by a British commissioned Superintendent) after an ANC convention in Lobatse. And then 2nd time in early 1967, less than 12 months after Botswana gained independence, where Botswana's police force was still pretty much the old British Protectorate police force; 11 years before Botswana had an Army of its own. Interestingly every other African freedom fighter including Samora Machel,Nelson Mandela, Kaunda, Willie Kgositsile, Hugh Masekela, Letlapa Mphahlele etc. Have all praised Botswana for housing them during the struggle but Hani says otherwise. It's crazy how he expected a Botswana which was poorer than the Transkei could even protect him. Botswana literally got bombed in June 1986 & there were other incidents like the parcel/mail bombs that were sent to exterminate a certain expat PAC linked teacher at St Joseph's College in 1972/74 or another parcel bomb incident that took place in Francistown. The only reason Botswana didn't have an official ANC base/headquarters was because the SADF would've sent tanks like they did in 86. But yeah Botswana is a sellout. A sellout that housed, fed & hired South African, Rhodesian, Mozambican, Angolan & Namibian freedom fighters. I guess when you don't tell your side of the story other people will lie on your name. Who formed SADC? Who formed the Frontline States? Isn't it funny that when Mangope wanted to reunite Botswana with Bophuthatswana, the Botswana government chose to side with Mandela. Anyways, I would like to thank Botswana the poor cousin that stifled their development to aid all the freedom fighters in Southern Africa just to be called sellouts by the same freedom fighters they protected from White Minority ruled justice systems. One day your story will be told Botswana. How your fledgling slums like White City, Bontleng, Old Naledi were unofficial ANC/PAC bases , how UB's valedictorian in 1986 died because SADF wanted the "Black Nationalist Terrorists" & bombed a portion of Gaborone. How innocent Batswana men died trying to help ZANU & ZAPU in the Rhodesian bush wars in 1977. How so many families never came back to ANC led South Africa after Sharpeville or even Soweto 1976 but were accomodated in Gaborone. One day your story will be told. For now let them call you a sellout, for all you had back then was 7km of tarred roads & a few hospitals built by missionaries, you shared your small huts when everyone else had mansions built by white people. One day your story will be told Botswana. Not by my relatives in Mahikeng, Zeerust & the like but by the actual families & communities in Botswana who still remember. This is the tragedy of helping family when you don't have much they dont appreciate it til you're no longer there. Botswana's is that poor relative who gave away the shirt on his back for his cousins yet those same cousins will give credit to everyone else but that cousin. They'll even say you're a wicked witch.
