Hey Alex, thanks for the great, simple to understand cinching ideas! In the beginning, when you say you're bucked in, do you mean you've also wrapped the tree with a flip line with gaffs on? Is this cinching line in addition to your flip line? TIA

The issue with cross loading the carabiner isn't so much that the gate could open but more about it breaking. The argument being that It's only rated 3kn when cross loaded which according to one of your videos is roughly 675 LBS which is still pretty strong as long as you don't free fall a few feet. I would confidently do that with a steel biner.

Man, thanks for the video. I think that the dual gage is great and the bar end mirrors both things look very cool on the bike. Can’t say the same about the top case, not only the one you have, but all top cases for me, are a aesthetic killer of this type of bike. I see the practicality of it, but for me that wouldn’t be an option. I don’t fancy backpack’s but for this kind of bike I would make an exception. This bike is too cool to get along with such a piece of hardware. That is, of course my humble opinion and obviously, I respect that you think differently. The only BMW bike’s that I think the hard panniers and top case don’t affect negatively the concept and the general looks is the big GS. Other than that, it seems always strange to me. Be well and ride safe✌️✌️

Instead of a thimble prusick, use a monkey tail. One leg of prusick cord with a ring on one end. Then you can tie your hitch on the rope instead of having to thread it through the six coils.

"Cinching spar anchors for SRT tree work." Obviously the only people watching this are arborists. A bowline as a highpoint is fine. A highpoint is static, it's not moving around. Just feed extra tail into the bowline and it's bomber.

The method you described with the sideloaded carabiner should be avoided - the issue doesn't have to do with the gate being "bombproof", it has to do with the fact that you're using the carabiner in a manner in which it was not designed to be used and are compromising the integrity of the device as a whole. Just because you've (thankfully) never seen one fail doesn't mean they haven't failed, and there could very well be beginners watching this channel and think what you're suggesting is ok. It's not, and people shouldn't be using carabiners this way, and if they are, at a minimum don't promote their use in an unsafe manner. Probably the best method would be using the Notch Quickie with the alpine butterfly - it's midline attachable, it can be advanced up the tree, and it can be retrieved from the ground. It hits all the major requirements and keeps everyone safe.
@alexworks9659

That’s cool. Have fun with your quickie. Just curious what you think was done before a quickie?
@mikesoultanian8050
@mikesoultanian8050 2 года назад
@@alexworks9659 It's not about fun - heck, the Quickie is definitely more of a hassle than a carabiner. If you're curious about sideloaded carabiners, check out the HowNOT2 channel as they break a bunch of carabiners in all sorts of sideloaded configurations, and it's pretty scary just how easily a sideloaded carabiner will break. Add to the fact that we're on static lines and it's even more of an issue (compared to taking a fall on a dynamic climbing rope). In your video you happened to place the carabiner on a perfectly smooth part of the tree - if someone were to follow your advice and set their TIP higher and out of sight (in a seemingly good location) and the carabiner happened to shift to a compromised position (i.e. over a stump) and they take a fall and it breaks, are you still going to say it was a better solution just because the Quickie didn't exist yet? There are better solutions than a carabiner, and the dangers of sideloading carabiners predates the Quickie. By all means use a carabiner if you want to (plenty of people do), but I don't think it's beneficial to the climbing community, especially beginners that are watching these videos, to be promoting that type of configuration, especially if you're not telling people just how dangerous it is to do so.
@alexworks9659
@alexworks9659 2 года назад
@@mikesoultanian8050 I do believe I said it was frowned upon. Again, Spar anchor as in blocking down a spar. NOT as TIP for working a prune or such. It’s literary right in front of you. In cases you missed that part. Cheers.
@mikesoultanian8050
@mikesoultanian8050 2 года назад
@@alexworks9659 You literally said "SRT canopy anchor" within the first sentence of your video, so someone assuming this can be used as a TIP would not be unreasonable. Further, just because it's on a spar doesn't make it any more right. If you take a fall and the carabiner shifts to a not-so-perfect part of the spar, you could again crossload the carabiner. I could understand if you were doing a video highlighting the wrong way to do something, but that's not what you did - you said it's frowned upon in some circles and then spent a good while telling people it wasn't a big deal and that your gate was bombproof, and it's not even the gate that's cause for concern. It's one thing if it was just me saying something, but there are four other people that have echoed the same concerns. We're just trying to help everyone stay safe in the canopy, so hopefully people will read the comments so they understand that these techniques are truly frowned upon, and for good reason.
