A quick rundown of my impressions with the BMW RnineT Scrambler after 10,000 miles. Some mods and additions include Piug bar ends, Puig levers, Rizoma mirrors, Puig Engine guards, Givi Trekker 42L top box and Tachometer addition.
Thanks for the thorough review of the add-ons. Did not know you could add the tach on that bike. I'm a big fan of the old fashioned "double clocks" on any bike. I'll check to see if you can do that on the Pure as well. +1 on the Rizoma bar-ends, too. That blue tint made a lot more difference than I would have thought once the sun dropped and the headlights came out.
SeaMonkey137 I’m not 100% sure but I believe it’s the same kit and I’ve seen the wiring there ziptied to the frame in the same spot just under the right side near the front of the tank on the pure.
Man, thanks for the video. I think that the dual gage is great and the bar end mirrors both things look very cool on the bike. Can’t say the same about the top case, not only the one you have, but all top cases for me, are a aesthetic killer of this type of bike. I see the practicality of it, but for me that wouldn’t be an option. I don’t fancy backpack’s but for this kind of bike I would make an exception. This bike is too cool to get along with such a piece of hardware. That is, of course my humble opinion and obviously, I respect that you think differently. The only BMW bike’s that I think the hard panniers and top case don’t affect negatively the concept and the general looks is the big GS. Other than that, it seems always strange to me. Be well and ride safe✌️✌️
I'm just over 10K on mine as well, an excellent ride and I'm taking mine down the entire west coast of the U.S. I would switch your headlight bulb to the LED one from Cyclops Adventure.
Sweet! Have a great trip. Man, I miss good roads with light traffic. Olin’s adjustable rear shock is next on the to do list. I’ve been looking at LED headlights too.
For me the only problem is the clutch cable is too much short for R9T Scrambler, when you turn right to the end of handle bar, the outside protecting pipe of clutch cabled will be scratched and damaged by the upper frame (with sharp edge) easily, especially when you have to back forward in the garage frequently. I do worry it will be broken one day. it just needs to add 5 cm length more I think to improve the condition. You may take a look at your cable the position what I said. The R9T Scrambler needs more length on it than other models because different upper frame design and bigger handle bar but BMW use the same length clutch cable for all R9T models to cause the problem.
Thanks for the video. Do you still have the bike. Did you feel the need to change the suspension later? front and back ? Any touring mods you recommend?
Thanks man! It’s a Sony As300 and rode video micro (plastic cold shoe glued to top of waterproof case) with a hole drilled in case for mic. Secured with Sugru.
Do you have the same issue as I do with engine overheating? Seems to operate around 240 degrees during city riding, then if I go up a few hills- it goes up substantially more. Ended up having smoke blow out the sides going up a city hill the other day. Been reading others have this issue also
I'm over on Kauai and looking at one of these from the mainland. Was wondering how they stand up to the heat, salt air, and rain. Seems like a great bike for our roads without going for a GS or other dual sport.
Salt and rain. Exhaust gets discolored, speckled rust on spokes. Air cooled so if it’s hot, humid and not moving it has crept up to 295 pretty hot. If it was water cooled I think I’d like it better. I definitely would get the engine guards. Gs is nice but it’s a big bike.
Mahalo, Alex! Nice work, I enjoyed the overview. Looks like Oahu, where you stay? I live up in Volcano on the Big Island. Ride Fast, Ride Safe! Wolfman
Hey brother, nice set up! Who makes that cellphone on your bar? Also, I really like your mirror? Which model is it? They are the perfect size. Thanks and ride safely!
john lopes Yeah, But have all your stuff dry when it pouring, not carrying a helmet and jacket in stores, not squashed groceries. Totally worth the dork factor for me. (I do take it off on random weekend fun rides)
those changes you made on your bike are sick , I personally have the same bike I wanted to ask you , could you upload a video tutorial on how to install the bar end mirrors I got the same mirrors from rizoma aswell but have no idea on how to mount them . Regards
g ride my new mirrors came with little rubber mushroom shaped plugs. If you need to DIY, use some Sugru and mold a little plug and smooth the top. There’s also a ram adapter ball that will thread into it for phone/gps.
Mark Rich sorry I didn’t quite explain that. The lower half of rocker switch works the right side. Momentary press=cycles thru pages, long press=resets or let you set date, etc.
Very nice looking with dual gauges, i think that the standard single gauge doesn’t have enough info like gear position indicator and fuel gauge. I’m looking for a Urban GS due to tall seat height or a Ducati Desert Sled
With the two instruments mounted (speedo & tachometer), are your cables/hoses binding at all? I installed what looks like the same thing you did but put it back to just the one, original speedometer because cables & hoses binding. I have a 2021 Scrambler. Thanks.
I did remove the tank and re zip tie and run the wires as straight as possible which gave it maybe 1/3-3/4” more slack. The original kinda snaked a little haven’t had any issues. Going on 25k miles, probably 20k with added tachometer.
Great work mate. Would you recommend this for longer commutes in similar tropical weather but rougher roads? My commute is about 1.5 hours one way and looking to buy this as my main ride.
Yup 👍🏽 still ride it daily 35-40 miles each way. Our roads aren’t great on my commute. Top case is nice to keep helmet and gear in while at work and work stuff dry on the road.
Hey Alex. Thanks for the great review of your mods! I'm seriously considering buying a 9T, but keep hearing that the handling of the Scrambler is poor due to the taller front tire and increased rake of the front end. I also live in a tropical climate, but 3rd world. I can buy one, but it's quite a trip to the dealer (and they don't allow test rides) so I'm really interested in your opinion. I'm also getting conflicting reports on the tires. Many comments about tubed tires, but the dealership (via email) told me they're tubeless. With tubeless tires, I can easily get the tire plugged and on my way again. Being stuck in the middle of nowhere where because I can't get my tired pulled and tube patched doesn't seem like a smart way to go. Sorry for being long-winded :)
Hey thanks for the comments! It’s not as snappy in corners like a the original 9t or a short sport bike. It does handle well. Weight is low, our roads are terrible and it does well. Spoke rims are tubeless. Cheers!
@@alexworks9659 Thank you very much! Once this virus is in the rearview mirror (and our movement is no longer restricted), I will be making a trip to the dealership. Thanks again for the reply.
Thanks for sharing. How come you got the pipe rusted so quickly. It rly shocked me . I've already reach 10k as well on both of my r9t urban GS 2018 and r9t 2016 but they still look completely like new. And your headlight broke down 4 times !? Also you mentioned that you ve replaced your break pads too does it really necessary to do that early? 😱 I'm just wondering why do you get everything worn out so fast? Or it is just normal ? Sorry if I'm asking dumb questions this is my second year of motorcycling.
Brett Murray-The wire is already there on the bike. Zip tied to the frame just under the tank on the brake side near the fork, plugs right into the gauge and shows all the info I showed in the video. No programming or battery disconnect. I am guessing it’s already sending signals and just not plugged into anything on the Scrambler model. Bought it online from kfm motorraeder in Germany. Found link to parts from NineT owners forum. Took 20 minutes install with filming it. Super easy to do.
Hi Alex, first of all many many thanks for this video. Single dash board was my concern when wondering whether to buy or not to buy Scrambler. Now it is much closer to decision as I really like the look, boxer engine, kardan and BMW motorcycles in general :) Please advise the part number for double dash board on kfm motorraeder website. Sorry to ask but their search engine is a nightmare. Cheers, have a million miles with smile on this bike :)
Not sure. Mine was tucked right on top of frame just under gas tank on “brake” side. Teeny tiny zip tie and a taped on rubber boot over the plug( I checked before I ordered parts)
@@alexworks9659 Hey Alex, would you recomend I go for the scrambler or the regular R nine T. The difference is around 2000 and I can spare that cash but I am wondering if its worth it. I love the scrambler look more.
xx 77538389483 bracket/parts kit 62118564506 Tachometer from my notes. I got numbers from a thread on ninetowners forum. Do some googling and you can find the link I got it from a German website www.kfm-motorraeder.de/cms/en. but I have a friend who ordered it from a CA dealer as well.
Since we both live in tropical countries, do you also experience overheating problems? Like damn. Those air cooled boxer engines are leg toasters on a hot afternoon.
Yeah it can get toasty. Reaches 298f on occasion when hot humid days in traffic. I’ve added an 12 volt electric fan and made a bracket for oil cooler. Seems to help quite a bit when in stop/go traffic.
I planing to go for it , but im not sure what to choise regular naked r1200r or R9T and third option is Scrambler, i worry that if is comfortable im 185cm high so is over 6 foot, im guessing wind protection is don't exist, or is any looking good mod like windscreen that will do the job. Regards

Hi Alex, great bike, nice video. Live on Big Island (Hilo). Just wanted to say I like your videos and considering buying same bike as you. Do you take it off road, or dirt roads etc. any comments on how it rides off road? Also, reading reviews that say the stock tires are bad on road/ and in rain. Riding in rain a lot here in Hilo, any thoughts on riding off road and on street in the rain with those stock tires. Thanks. Hit me up if you want to ride on the big island.
Thanks for the offer! I've done a few hunting roads and a few easy trails. It is not a dirt bike and off road is heavy and sluggish compared to a kx250 (my only real dirt bike experience). These tires do well on wet roads, if you lean it over on shitty roads in rain, it will get squirrely. I do think the semi knobbie tires are what most complaints refer to. These have a good mix of traction and wear.
xs_ fox 🦊 😁 Hi! I’m 6’1”. It’s 81cm according to my measuring tape and maybe could lower it by fork and rear spring mods. Seat is pretty thin so won’t gain much there. If you can do it awesome! You’d have to dive into forums to find a good way to do it. Good luck!😁👍🏽
C C homemade rack,Tig welded Out of 3/4” tubing to match the pointy curves of tail light. Wasn’t one available when I bought the bike. I do like the hepco Becker tail rack for it. Box is attached with Givi mono key plate
I love the R nine T. I do not think this would be a good first bike. Has quirks, it’s torque-y and pulls (Roll)to one side under acceleration (shaft drive and rotation on engine is on long axis vs transverse). A bit too much low end power and can get you in trouble quickly accidentally. You could easily loop this thing from standstill at a light. It’s also a bit heavy, although it’s CG is pretty low. I’d get engine guards because if you lay it down even at low speed, you’re gonna ruin the heads. Get riding on a older cheap used bike first. My opinion. Ride safe!🤘🏽
For your headlight issue, do you install the headlight bulb with your bare hands? If so that'll be why your bulbs keep going out, as the oils from your hands make it so the bulb goes out quicker. Next time wear some gloves installing your headlight bulbs and it will last much longer.
Guarin Nardone I work in the lighting/rigging industry. I am very familiar with changing lamps/projector and wear nitrile gloves/ clean lamp with denatured alcohol. Thanks though! LED in the future for sure.
@@alexworks9659 my bad, most people forget about the oils on their hands when changing halogen bulbs. Nice, you should put up a install video of the LED.

dropping 500 for tachometer is serious coin something that should of come standard like Honda CB 1100 or Kawi Z900RS.I dislike BMW philosophy of gouging people
@@alexworks9659 I don't really agree with Sb Sb... I have the r nine t classic 2015 model and it has about 27 000 miles on it, and not a day's trouble with it.
This is probably one of the worst "reviews" I even seen.Minimum turn the engine ON! We are not talking about appliance! You just talked about the mods you did.....That's all
Thanks for the comment. As a complete novice in filming and reviews I will use your sage advice from your years of amazing reviews and your expertise and experience...It takes a lot of work to make the cool fancy reviews. I’m filming with little experience and just sharing my experience. I’ll review a toaster next time.
I don't understand why people get all butthurt like this guy when they don't like a video. For fuck's it's like they think the entire world is here to serve and entertain them. And then instead of simply moving on to something else he takes the time to get all cunty. It's mind-boggling. I appreciate this video as I am seriously considering buying an R9T and I plan to put a shitload of miles on it. Also I learned a few things I didn't already know - like the tacho wiring being there on models without the tacho and the fact that those folding adjustable levers have sharp edges. Not to mention getting an idea of the general wear and tear. All around I think it's a quality video and I appreciate that you took the time to share your experience with the rest of us. Ruben Sahakian is just a penis.
Rack is great! I stuff the box with gear(25-lb ish) and some days I strap a duffel to the pillion seat also. No cracks on mine. Wife is 5’7” and 125 and we 2up a couple times a month for round’ the island ride or a brunch ride 40-80 miles or so she likes it and says it’s comfortable. Top box is nice she feels better that something is behind her and a little lower back rest.
