Fascinating. Thanks for showing us. It's somewhat of a leisurely pace, especially compared to the tractor a hundred years later (at minute 19:00). I'm always astonished that there aren't more serious accidents, with those flywheels not covered and such.
Agreed but the crowd was a surprise and because of that it was not possible to go around the engines in the time. Should have gone the previous day but was at work!
Just want to congratulate the boomer generation for inflating the prices of steam traction engines, to the point that gen-x and millennials will never ever be able to afford their own. Once the boomers are dead, the majority of these machines will fall into the hands of equity companies, they will be mothballed as an asset and the steam preservation scene will regress into a WO Bentley type elitist hobby, unattainable for the everyday working man or woman. I went to all the major steam auctions of the 1980’s and 1990’s with my father, where prices were £5k-£10k for a project, I just presumed I would one day be custodian of my own engine, alas I am relegated to visiting steam rallies as a spectator or when possible a bit of volunteering at a museum. If any one ever wonders why steam preservation becomes a thing of the past, go look in a mirror!
English threshing machines look so odd compared to North American units! Were the tires loaded on the 806? I have an 826 row crop with loaded rear duratorque tires and no way it would have slipped on that ramp even wet with that weight.
My dad and Uncle Roy used to run this exact Engine. I was caught in the cab at a rally when I was about 5yrs old about 40+ yrs ago and a valve went and filled the cabin with steam.
@@rwhb1 He took me once on his night shift in Elsenham train station, kept waking me up to open the gates for the trains running through, he was married to my mums sister Heather and used to live in the house right next to the station with the little shop on the side. still remember it clearly to this day. Used to have me and my sisters down the farm cleaning the wheels on the Foden and we used to sneak off and go play in the old steam trains. Great days.
@@rwhb1 I take it the Foden is still running and going to rallies? if so could you please send me the dates and locations you'll attend? I'd love to see the ol girl once again.
