Wow… a blast from the past! I remember I was there at that gig and we weren’t that many in that room upstairs at Ryles, I even bought a CD directly from Ben. Thanks for sharing that video.
In case anyone is interested : I have begun posting video clips transcribed from this video footage. The George Van Eps Excerpts Playlist is here : ru-vid.com/group/PLoLOItWSclTWVM6j0k1y21c3XalpIBMhs
Oh God if anyone ever releases more vids from this concert I'll be complete in this incarnation. And the world is in more need than ever of new 90s Ben Monder performances on youtube. Please God make it happen! My favorite artist....... for ever inspiring.
My god!!!! What I find interesting is that it has taken years of my own guitar listening and playing to finally begin to appreciate what an uncompromising iconoclastic creative force Ben Monder is! His work is so unique and almost self-referential to my ears. It is as if he was an alien who found a guitar while traveling between planets and decided to make music by his own invented set of rules. Outstanding!!!!
@Umblachery !!! Where does this video comes from? any other clip from this performance that U know of? A dvd perhaps ? Thanks !!! Just ordered the album Ceremony from Peter Brainin with Ben Monder and maybe those other guys too...can't wait to listen to it. Thanks for this video!
As usual in most jazz clubs, you can hear endless talking in the background abd have to really focus on the music to really hear what's going on. Pears before swine. I mean diamonds!!
Unfortunately this remids me a lot of Norwegian audiences- something which has been debated a lot in different types of media lately. But it's wonderful to hear the master play- no matter the background noise.
Great music. Not for the faint of heart. I shake my head thinking of how many people wouldn't even know how to begin to listen to this, largely because of their "popular" music programming.
When you know the complexity of these 3 standards . You can clearly tell that Ted is improvising chords melody with 2 voices / 3 voices counterpoint over ALL these changes . Never repeating himself , Changing keys in the middle of the songs , improvising with a walking bass lines and all that for almost 10mn... Everything He plays Sounds Great.....GENIUS
If you are about to watch the video and are checking out the comments, just know that there are several glitches where the video glitches and the music pauses for a second. its kind of annoying but the music is still there ;)
