with Chris Lightcap on bass and Ted Poor on drums. This concert took place at the Doré Theatre on the campus of CSU Bakersfield in 2006. The audio/video technician was James Dethlefson.
Monder has deep insight into fundamentals, & thus, is a great guitar teacher. I highly recommend his instructional downloads. I play nothing like Monder, nor is my goal to play anything like him, but no matter; his lessons can be applied equally well to any style, virtually immediately.
I have not heard of him before , and I am not sure why , he is quite wonderful indeed , i love his understatement , harmony and space , and sense of journey ... great show !
This melody has been haunting me since I first heared it on the record. Thanks Umblachery! I'm transcribing it right now and the video is of great help... I hope I can do it.
Nice chilling stuff.. I found this by searching "ambient jazz" even though I didn't know whether that is real genre or not. maybe it is now. :) Twin Peaks soundtrack is kinda what I am after. Peaceful, smooth, eerie atmosphere and nice soft basses etc.
you see how much he rotates his entire arm about 10 degrees to get another type of extension and angle for his third and fourth phalanx on his pinky and ring finger. if you're aware of that, it becomes "more" doable, still very difficult.
Different sort of style, but his voicing choices/harmony are very reminiscent of Holdsworth. What is that "sound"? Is it chromatic movement in fourths or something? I'm absolutely positive there is (technically) some 'formal' logic to it, as you can identify it when two chords are played...I just don't know what the hell that logic happens to be!
What? Nothing like A. H. Mate. Because his tons of moderm voicing does not mean that he sounds like A. H. Man People always talking rubbish on the internet?Like the other day someone said George Benson is quite close to Wes Montgomery. What it's wrong with all this people? It's like me saying all Thai food and Malaysia food are quite similar. Not they are absolutely different (very different). All this people are completely deaf and hard to convince. Their ears are really undeveloped.
Ben uses an Ibanez AS50 from the 80s. The more recent models are somewhat similar, but use much cheaper materials hence the low price. They are actually not bad considering the price, but necks have some issues with sharp edges. I use one every so often for gigs when I don't want to bring out my ES-335.
Do you know if Ben has modified his AS50 in any significant way? Specifically I want to know whether he is using the original Super 58 pickups, or if they have been swapped out for something different...
@@DeeEfSea I’m not really sure, but beyond basic maintenance (new frets, tuners, etc.) my guess is that he hasn’t done much in the way of mods. I get the impression that he generally sticks to one setup for long periods of time.
I've got the same gear except my 20W amp is based on a '65 Fender Princeton. The guitar is much the same as mine. I find people love the sparkle and shimmer of the cleans you get from a good Ibanez AS series. I'm getting a full Ibanez hollowbody this year, but in all truth I only need my AS80. No pedals either or reverb. Just straight into the amp. :) No doubt, it's in the fingers as well!!! So cool to hear this stuff from another player (apart from Pat Metheny).
Hmm, he uses Fender amps. One modified Princeton with 12" speaker instead of a 10" and a Fender 65 Deluxe, a Robert Keeley modified RAT distortion, Boss compressor, LXP 1 Lexicon delay unit, and Deja Vibe (even if I never heard him use it). Dont know what delay pedal he uses, if he does that at all. Perhaps a Boss DD3 or something? Line 6 delay pedals are popular (but big), heard from a friend that T-Rex delays are really crazy as well. Its a jungle you know...;) Best, Sandemose
@jeffreyburr Ha! I know what you mean. Have you tried playing Mistral? I don't think my index finger will ever recover from doing an extended diagonal barre.
Ben said he bought a "good" guitar, a Gibson 336 model (?) that he sold just weeks later after he realized he liked his Ibanez better. Squeadlieshero, obviously Ben posses the skills to descide what guitar which suits him best. If its good for Ben, why bother what he plays? Its like saying: is he playing a G major chord? Why would one play such a crappy chord?
You seem like you would hate listening to most music, dude. I love Holdsworth and Monder, but to say Monder is anything like Allan stylistically is too much of a reach.
You're not there for the show. You're there for the music. Its a blank stage with a couple of amps on the floor and some wires squiggling around. Thats the show. You're there because Ben Monder is one of a kind and you want to be impressed by his talents not for flashy business.
