I live in Stockholm, Sweden with my wife

I enjoy:

* traveling - Japan, NY and exploring in general
* watching movies and creating our own silly short movies
* most things related to Japan and I’ve been trying to learn Japanese for 3 years but it’s hard.. lol
* improv, walking, running, eating…

My wife and I live in Kyoto. We have been all over Japan, but we avoid Tokyo-Yokohama like the plague. We refer to it as The Anthill. More than 1/3 of all Japanese now live in The Anthill, about 43 million people. Few foreigners realize that there are now two Japans - The Anthill and the rest of the country. Most think of The Anthill when they think “Japan”, and this leads to many misconceptions. In our travels, we find that TA residents are very easy to distinguish from other Japanese people by their clothing, their attitudes, and their general air of disdain for anywhere that isn’t TA. Some actually curl their lips at having to mingle with lesser Japanese. Our government is in the process of selling us to China and India and has begun importing globalist DEI to replace Japanese culture. We estimate that Japan will be a nation only as a place on the map with a globalized culture by the end of this century. Sure, our long history and its remnants will still be a tourist attraction, but Japan as a distinct ethnic and cultural entity will be gone.

Why does it feel like 1999 Tokyo looks like 2024 Tokyo. This makes me really feel like Japan was ahead of its time, but at the same time, Japan seems like it is now stuck in the past.
@midlifecrisisme6182
@midlifecrisisme6182 Месяц назад
@@yonghyeon123 on the surface it looks similar today. More skyscrapers - quite a lot more nowadays and a number of mega projects like Roppongi Hills, Azabudai Hills etc. Outside of the major hubs it can really feel like time hasn’t moved at all. The bubble era was over a few years before 99 so the recline in terms of a being a leading technological powerhouse had already started back then.

I was born in South Korea in October 1999. The appearance of Tokyo, Japan is amazing because it looks sophisticated and clean. But Seoul still needs to develop further. Do you have any plans to come to Seoul, Korea?
@midlifecrisisme6182
@midlifecrisisme6182 2 месяца назад
We were in Seoul just a few weeks ago actually. It was our second visit - first was maybe 9-10 years ago. We like Seoul. In a number of ways Seoul is more advanced - technologically definitely! I would also say it’s more sophisticated in terms of contemporary art/design and it feels greener than Tokyo. Tokyo is cleaner - yes! And train infrastructure is still better. I’m actually considering taking video footage from. Seoul and do comparison video with Tokyo.

singaporean here.....i just realised how asian cities like hong kong singapore and tokyo had such a incredibly strong asian vibes back in the 90s and 80s and early 00s......from the night life to the decor and signage..... also the fact everyone in asia dressed very simply back then,most guys either wore casual baggy t shirts and shorts or basketball jerseys or the older grownups all wore polo ts and trousers or office attires....fashion back then was much much more non descript and nobody cared how they looked......they were at a major train station at 4:15 and my god everyone just dressed so simply....not like paupers but so ordinarily, simple t shirts and shorts and trousers, like its just another day in asia. god reminds me of singapore back in the 2000s, no one cared about how they looked back then, there were more important concerns and problems in life,life is too short to waste on trivialities .. nowadays cities just looks and feels the same everywhere u go.....i dunno whether its because of globalisation and u see the same major brands and chains everywhere and all the shopping malls and buildings have the same "architectural style" or the massive influx of immigrants and foreigners u see in every city on earth nowadays...... the world is starting to look incredibly uniform and bland and copy pasta.....
@midlifecrisisme6182
@midlifecrisisme6182 2 месяца назад
Thanks for watching and commenting. I do agree cities look more the same. Mostly I think it’s globalization and digitalization. But I still think many cities still have their own identity. And outside the main streets and hubs the “sameness” is often less obvious. We went to Singapore for the first time in 96 and I think that city has always felt and looked more western than most other cities in Asia. About clothes - in general my perception is actually that people in most places are less formally dressed nowadays. But maybe they care more about fashion trends though. I’m gonna fix and upload Singapore 90s video later this summer
