I must confess, as the plot developed, and the people changed, time passing, it would have been nice had the story allowed the Pilots to gain the modern plane to match the German Monoplanes
My Grandfaher flew with No3 Squadron AFC at Bertangles in France. I would love to have him been alive to see this series, and receive his opinion compared to his service.. He only sustained damage on one occasion when, on 4.11.1917, (from his logbook) "lost in Fog, landed to find way, piece of stone fence broke prop, flew machine (a BE)back on 5/11". At that time he had flown 39 hours, 7.30 solo.His only crash was on 20/12/17 "crashed owing to heavy fog" flying an RE8. No mention of stunting or spin training in his logbook.
this series is amazing. thank you very much for sharing them. even the little bits of pouring the milk before or after the tea and given consideration and i can't get over how wonderful the old planes were and how brave and skilled the pilots who flew them.

I noticed a lot are Mk9 spitfires which came out a lot later in the war and a few MK5's too, again a later addition. the majority of aircraft Churchill sent to France at the beginning of the war were indeed Hurricanes, not Spitfires. However when the TV series was made over 30 years ago Hurricanes were a lot rarer than spitfires. Since this film was made More Spitfires and even Hurricanes have been rebuilt and returned to Airworthy condition! Having said all that, it's still a nostalgic trip watching a tv series I saw in my 30's, now retired and 3 years of 70 I have thoroughly enjoyed watching it (ignore my being so pedantic on Aircraft Mk Numbers etc) The clip of a spitfire flying under a bridge was really done with, `I believe Ray Hannah as the pilot.
I watched the whole lot am on holiday and its pissing with rain so was lovely watching all this being English and living in Germany really good was difficult in those days flying shitty aeroplaves strange many years later aircraft did the bg jobs back then in WW1 was a lot different but interesting great flyer as well nice series must have had a lot of production costs well done God Bless England!
At the time this came out, I was in the US Navy out in the Mediterranean on the USS Forrestal repairing A-6 Intruder attack aircraft, so I missed it. I was in 4 different squadrons in my 20 year career and some things are still the same. My grandfather was in the Army Air Service as an aerial photographer flying in the rear seat of an Airco DH-4 guarding and surveilling our southern border with Mexico during WW1. This has been an excellent series. I'm now 73, and recently retired on Dec., 31st , 2023. after a 53 year career in aviation. Too bad it only had 13 episodes. 🙂
Wonderful series, marred only by the video quality, especially series two. Flying the 1937 Tiger Moth was modern by comparison. Often wondered what happened to VH TIG still in my logbook
The best series I've ever watched, thought provoking, interesting and entertaining. The characters are all believable and normally I can see the twists in a story before before they unfold but this one kept me guessing. So superior to the rubbish served up today.
The actors in those days could act. People today are surprised to see the conviction and the quality of the scripts but this was before they were chosen using Diversity checklists
