Had had no real interest in, knowledge about, fighter planes, their pilots, or the politics of the inner workings of the British military during WWI, til this wonderful series!
thanks a lot for posting this superb series i watched it when it was first shown back in 1977 i was only 11 then and i havnt seen it since. This was the real era when the rfc was learning its trade craft sad to say a lot of alans contemperies would have killed in april 1917.I think some of the aircraft came from the shuttleworth collection.
I've gotta love the general He's a man after Trigger's heart. He almost busted a gut when he heard forward attack. He's probably thinking "About damn time!"
This series is unique in WWI aviation movies as it concentrates on the early rather than the later period where fighters like the Fokker DR 3 and 7 as well as Nieuport 17, 23 and Sopwith Camel and SE 5 were in action.
I was wondering why I haven´t heard about the Sopwith Camel in this series. My knowledge of WW1 fighter planes is from Snoopy in the cartoon ¨Peanuts¨ who had regular encounters with the Red Baron.
Wouldn't mind paying for the licence fee if the BBC could be trusted to make stuff like this today . Colditz Secret Army , Wings were all made in the space of a decade . The BBC have not chosen to make a good drama that people can directly relate for over 40 years. God only knows how those hipster arse bandits are going to dramatise COVID 19 in a decades time . I can only cringe lots of loud camera work and Netflick yank infested copying .
Ive read some comments about when this first aired, which confused me, since some were saying in the late 70’s, but i remember this being on the BBC in 67 or 68. I remembered it being on as a kid in the UK. if you read the Roman numerals, it was released in 1968..... sigh and i thought i was gonna lose 10 years off my age. Lol great show then and now.
41:57 This series is very good and made great by the "extras" like the clerk, Sgt. Mills. This guy nails this role perfectly IMO. I hope some of these guys got awards for this show. They did a damned good job. Why has this never made it to US tv?
@@MrRobster1234 Watch _HBO'S BAND OF BROTHERS_ ... I think you'll love it, even if it's *American Made.* If you love _WINGS_ you obviously have very good taste. Cheers
+ kernal scott 2 American army was only involved in a few major battles in WW1..the Saint-Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne Offensives. And it was the Royal Navy`s blockade of German ports that finally won the first world war...
Love the series, but it's unwatchable in 240 res even on a 10" tablet screen. Anyone know where higher res copy of series 2 might be available? Even 480 like series 1 on YT will do.
+ Bill B no thought given to the Albatros scout...or the Pfalz 111 then?....which went so far as to win back air superiority for the German Air Service during "Bloody April"...where the RFC lost 275 Aircraft and 400 crew..
"Bloody April" was in April 1917, about 18 months after the setting for this. This is definitely the time of the "Fokker scourge". There are many interesting planes which fought in 1915 and later - can't feature them all.
