Great video, I'm just getting into turning, I'm surprised at how much finishing was done and at how small the bit was that you gripped in the chuck. Turned out amazing!
Hi Stephen, the standard jaws on a record sc3 or sc4 chuch is 50mm or 2 inch. I normally only turn a 1/4 to 3/8 tenon to grip in the jaws. I changed my mind about what I was going to turn half way through lol. I used Yorkshire grit and micro fine Yorkshire grit to get a smooth finish, again a bit of a trial, before finishing with acrylic lacquer. There are lots of ways to finish the pieces, no need to spend this much time on finishing.
Beautiful work. I'm just starting out and looking to buy some tools. It looks like you use the same gouge for most of the work. I've heard people say not to get a roughing good as a bowl gouge can do that job. Amy thoughts on that? Also any tools you'd recommend for a beginner??
It will depend on what type of turning you are doing. For bowl turning, I would suggest a 3/8 bowl gouge a parting tool and a round nose scraper. You will also need a 4 jaw chuck such as the record power sc3. Most of my tools are from Crown. Record do a good 3 piece starter kit that would meet your early needs when starting out. If it's spindle turning your interested in then I would get a 25mm roughing gouge, a 3/8 spindle gouge and a parting tool. Again, record do a 3 piece spindle starter kit. Don't buy cheap tools, they are a waste of time. I would also get a book by Keith Rowley, woodturning foundation course, as it goes into detail on turning basics, including sharpening which I would highly recommend.
hey Frank, thanks for sharing your experience. I have the same machine and found your videos extremely useful. Can I ask if you had any trouble squaring up the sliding mechanism to the saw? I found the slide to always be out bit when compared to the fence which seems quite accurate out of the box. I also found it a bit tricky to level up the support frame for the slider.
Yea it was difficult. The company I bought it from included setup in the cost. The engineer took ages to get it square. His method involved a 4x4 sheet of mdf, doing a cut alone 1 side then turning it 90 degrees and doing another cut. He then compared the 2 strips he cut off to see if the were the same size at both ends. He kept making minor adjustments until they were.
Hi Frank, thankyou for the excellent video mate, I have the cartridge filter and you would be wise to get one, fine dust can easily get through the bag, first class video pal keep up the great work, louie
Hi Louie, I got a filter a couple of weeks after I made the video. I have this in about 2 years now and can't fault it. vertually no dust reaches the extractor as long as I remember to empty the collection bag when it gets full 😁
It looks like the bag is on the outside of the frame below the cyclone. How do you change the bag when it gets full? It appears you would need to remove the frame, which would likely cause the dust and chips to lift out with it, which could be messy. Am I missing something really obvious?
Hi Andy Yea I installed the piping kit, I'll see if I can get time to do a review this week. on the whole it's ok the bends don't fit very well, I had to tape them with duct tape to make them air tight. The Blast gates work well, but the slide blocks up very easily. the self cleaning blast gates are much better, but, have to be bought separately. I trimmed the end of mine with a grinder to allow them to act as self cleaning gates.
@@frankkane3904 Just setting up my workspace and looking for somthing to use so interested in your opionions on it. Looking forward to the review. Am I right in thinking it's 63mm not 100mm ?
