Dr. Doug Lucas is a dual board-certified physician specializing in optimizing healthspan and bone health for women experiencing osteoporosis, perimenopause, and menopause.
Women's Health has been marginalized for far to long, from misguided approaches to hormone replacement therapy, subpar care for osteoporosis, misunderstood information on nutrition and exercise, and underutilized tools that keep women vibrant into midlife and beyond.
Dr. Doug has build a thriving virtual medical practice that helps midlife women and beyond reignite their spark by reversing osteoporosis and optimizing their hormones with cutting-edge tools and a focus on longevity. He is passionate about helping women understand that feeling less than optimal is typical, but not normal.
I’m 81 and need something that I can use for exercise, as I’m not able to walk very well, but I’m having trouble with retaining fluid in my legs and feet. I’ve just ordered a small unit to use setting and possibly standing. I’m retired and can’t afford a more expensive unit. I understand the idea you get what you pay for but we seniors have very limited income.
This makes me want to stop taking any supplements. Our recent ancestors never took anything and lived healthy lives (until our poisoning was ramped up) My 93 year old friend eats like she did on the farm when she was a little girl, which is basically the Weston Price diet, and is doing just fine.
I was abandoned by the doctors after in patient fragility fracture of the femur...the nurse came in and said "You're on your own", I then went on to have multiple blood clots after my non-existent follow-up care.
Hi Dr Doug, would it be possible to have a transcript of your talk please?

This is one of the most insightful conversations about health I've come across . Morley's knowledge about copper and mineral balance is truly IMPRESSIVE. I'm excited to dive into part 2! Thanks for this amazing video!. 🫂🫂🫂
I'm 70 with osteopenia and use a vibration plate daily. I'm not certain it has had any effect on the bone density, but it has definitely improved my balance. Three years ago I discovered that a doctor-advised daily use of omeprazole had had a devastating effect on my absorption of calcium and iron, resulting in iron deficient anemia and coincidentally the first appearance of osteopenia. I weaned myself off of it and the anemia reversed. I still have osteopenia, but don't know whether there has been any difference in degree. Use of PPIs is so pervasive, any study of vibration plate effectiveness with respect to bone density needs to account for that.
Hi! Checkout the series on my channel on vibration plates, here is the first video ---> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6m03lUDEmEw.html
Hi Doc, off topic but do you have any data that DXA underestimates bone density in small females? I'm suspicious of some DXA reports I am seeing in females with BMI 19 or less.
CTX and P1NP tests need to be conducted before any medication is issued. My endocrinologist didn't do this and warranted medication, he was out the door when I found one that would issue the test. How medication is warranted without a starting point is beyond me.
I was recently in the past 2 years, diagnosed with osteoporosis and just visited the osteoporosis clinic. I have been taking calcium and vitamin D since this diagnosis. The doctor told me to come off the calcium as my diet consumed enough, the calcium in my urine was high because of the supplements. I feel the supplements are not necessary for this reason and would not have known this had I not done a 24-hour urine test, which I had to request. Not enough water samples are taken in the medical field which obviously doesn't show up in blood tests. People on trial should not be taking any of their own supplements, as this doesn't make them good subjects
I was an avid runner for over 20 years, and I woke up one morning and could not walk. I went to the doctor an was told I had 2 herniated discs as well as osteoporosis. He wanted to do surgery on me. I refused the surgery and started doing stretching from the RU-vid channel, after 3 weeks my back pain was getting better, I then started walking for months, then added a weighted vest using only 6 pounds. Today I am pain free an continue to walk 10000 steps per day and more. I also use resistance bands for my muscle maintenance. I am 70 years old, thank you for your advise.
Hi Paula, I have a similar experience. Though I’m 69 and I don’t have the big C. I walk and I do heal drops. Because of Dr. Doug‘s recommendation I joined an Osteostrong. They have great results. I do take vitamin D and K every day. I’m going to get some AlgaeCal and start taking that next week. Recommended by Dr. Doug. so I’m going to back off on my vitamin D a little because I think it’s in the AlgaeCal. I have to do a little more research. Dr. Doug has been a wealth of information. Good luck on your journey
You are correct saskhiker: Try your best to live a healthy lifestyle and then..... Do your research people and talk to your urologist and nephrologists if you have/have had lots and lots of kidney stones as I …….. “HAP (hydroxyapatite) crystallites on the surface of renal epithelial cells are nests that can induce the formation of Randall plaques and even kidney stones.” And let’s face it - we are guinea pigs - the “practice” of medicine is always ongoing. Even Dr. Doug has recommended supplements or the amount of supplements and then changes what and how much to take! Has Dr. Doug helped - indeed he has, but be you own advocate and research, research, research any given subject and just do your very best to offset osteoporosis, kidney stones/disease or whatever you have going on, and then try to do your best (along with your physicians), so you can regulate multiple medical issues.
So interesting… I’m just a regular person, curious and like to research everything but never did I understand the hipe about zinc and ascorbic acid! Never took them, I just follow my instincts;)
Thank you Dr. Doug. I am 64 y.o and had the courage to refuse the Bisphosphonate drug that was prescribed by my doctor (gynecologist). I am currently followed by a bone specialist here in Geneva Switzerland, who also teaches at the University. I am taking the Algae Cal + Strontium Boost supplements daily, I eat well (vegetarian), exercise daily alternating with weights, running and yoga. Also take daily collagen peptide powder. Will have a dexa scan in about 5 months from now. I feel great and have to say, I'm in pretty good shape for my age! In general, I find that doctors here in Geneva prescribe way too much medication and I wish that you could come over and give them a training. Love that pyramid that you use with your patients!!
Dr. Lucas - what I’m not sure of is this: does the Calcium and Vitamin D have to be taken together at the same time? Meaning twice a day for me. Thank you so much for all your support!
I just have to share how happy I am today- 2 years ago I had my first dexa scan showing osteoporosis in hip but more spine at - 2.7. I just had another scan and I was really scared it would be worse after 2 years. All my doctors are trying to shame me into the drugs but I won't take them. My results are now -2.4 in spine so now officially osteopenic bot osteoporotic. I know there can be variability with the scans but at least the trend is not downward. I haven't really done much except forcing myself to get enough protein, calcium through diet, magnesium, started K2, Vit D and doing some exercise. I can't tell you anymore so no point in asking. I dont know how it got better but I'm just relieved 😊
My first dexa showed osteopenia of the spine, and my second showed a normal spine. My doctor at the Osteoporosis center said if the position you are in is the slightest bit out or a different machine is used, that can affect the results, that's why dexas are not the best, It doesn't differentiate between different kinds of bones, cortical or trabecular. The best is a scan called EOS scan which is used in a limited area within the UK and is expensive.
My sister has endometriosis as well as osteoporosis. Whenever she takes Vitamin D, even just 500IU, her endopain flares up within a couple of hours. Even when combining it with Mg and K2. She tried different D3 Supplements. What could cause this?
And you need vitamine A. A good intervention study would use a set of 4-5 supplements in two different reasonable high doses. But that would mean like 20-30 arms. Nobody will do it.
Thank you so much for your videos. Does your program include which supplements I should be taking and where to purchase them? I want to make sure I’m getting exactly what I need.
If there is anything I learned from this channel is there is no silver bullet in preventing osteoporosis. It is living a healthy lifestyle, good diet with lots of protein, suppliment vitamin d,K. Weight training, high impact exericses. Not over training with cardio cause it depetes the bones. And it's never too early to prevent bone loss.
I have osteoporosis of the spine and osteopenia of the hips diagnosed 3 years ago. I refused fosamax, took vitamin D and vitamin K2-MK 7, walk daily if weather permits, ate a healthier diet such as plain yogurt, dairy. Calcium supplements made me constipated....ugh. My dexa scan this month shows no changes in the spine so at least I'm stable, and both hips had a minor improvement which is likely from my walking program. I'm also post complete hysterectomy with ovary removal due to endometrial cancer 10 years ago. Age 67 now so will keep up with my program and add in weight training, and confer with a physical therapist to find out the best way to go about weight training. Also, just diagnosed with breast cancer so really working at being as healthy and fit as possible before surgery. Thanks for the info....I really appreciate this channel.
Congrats! I have same thing. Finally agreed to Reclast treatment, but still continuing program similar to yours. No calcium supplements due to having had hyper-parathyroidism. See what my next DEXA shows.
With a deficiency of Ferritin and B12 my doctor told me to eat more meat and buy iron supplement and to use it every day. Of course that didn’t help at all so I began to look for alternatives and try to understand what’s going on with my body. Started taking copper bisglycinate 2mg/capsule 1-2 capsules per day. Also magnesium and L-tryptophan before bedtime. Slowly I started to function again and get better sleep. It’s sad that our doctors are brain washed and don’t understand how it’s all working I symbiosis.
