The reason why the mother’s mouth is sewn shut is because back in the days when Madonna’s mother died that’s how the funeral home would close the mouth of the deceased when they died with their mouth open ( Madonna was 5 when her mom died) now a days they glued the lips of the deceased together
Her father was so strict and so obsessed with religion that he was called "the preacher"in the neighborhood. He raiser his children with extreme discipline. Madonna grew up thinking the Devil lived in the basement of her house, and believing her mother had died because God was punishing her for being a bad girl. He blamed herself for her mother's death throughout her whole childhood. In this song, and video, she merges her father with the figure of a priest, creating this Father/Priest figure, hence "Oh Father I have sinned". She then grew up and left home without telling her father. She was only 18 years old when she moved to New York all by herself with only 36 dollars in her pocket and the clothes she was wearing. She ate from the garbage and she was homeless for a couple of years, until she moved into the basement of an abandoned church. In that basement she learnt how to play guitar and drums. She started in music as a drummer and guitarist in a punk-rock band. Meanwhile she started to write her first songs, helped by her then boyfriend who was a DJ. She started to make dance music. She struggled for 5 years become becoming famous. She would bring her cassette with her songs to the clubs and give it to the DJs trying to convince them to play her music. One night one of the DJs agreed and the dancefloor went crazy. That DJ gave the demo tape to a guy from a record company, and she got her first contract. And the rest is history. She is truly a self made artist.
She was haunted for years by the image of her mothers mouth being sown shut. She actually features that imagery on the cover of her Madame X album, with the album title written across her lips in the style of stiches. The scene's with her as an adult being hit are representative of the abusive relationships she ended up during her early adulthood. She's also backtracked a little saying that her father was never physically abusive, but more that he was emotionally absent at a time she really needed him, but it wasn't until later in life she realized it's because he was grieving too. Madonna has a pretty complex history, and she really does bare it all in her songs and videos, but with a little bit of interpretation required. Nice reaction.

Madonna was named after her mother Madonna. A rare thing in the catholic religion. Her mom died in her thirties when Madonna was five. This perhaps would be the catalyst that would make Madonna the icon today 40 plus years into her career and still relevant and a trendsetter. Madonna's less pop oriented experimental songs are my favorite. Paradise Not For me! A mood and a vibe with an unforgettable bass.

Interesting dichotomy in your reaction - not a fan, but the song is good. Not sure how anyone cannot be a fan of Madonna as her catalogue is huge and her artistry has incredible depth. Her range is incredible - going from lighthearted bops, dance music, spiritual awakening to overt political songs - in every style and genre imaginable. Her visuals are always off the chart as well.
Ehh my style of music is more conscious rap or it needs to have a catchy melody. Madonna has a few good tracks but they aren't anything I would personally add to my playlist. It's nice to listen to it for the first time tho :)

Loosely based on her father and the very real death of her mother. Her father wasn’t abusive but she felt abandoned and the video depicts recurring bad relationships with other men. Is your love/hate relationship with Madonna or her fans? lol I give you credit for trying and if her music isn’t your “taste” hopefully you can appreciate her artistry and the massive artistic impact she has had on music, culture for so many die hard fans. She’s more than a B rated pop singer flash in the pan.
Oh no the fans are fun to mess with since a lot of them bash my reactions but Madonna is pretty cool. I'm not too big a fan of her music but I like the messages she puts out on each of her songs I've reacted to so far. I would listen to her songs once to get the message then move on

I'm seeing a lot of reacts from north american people about this video. Honestly, it's amazing how they don't realize that the crosses on fire refer to the Ku Klux Klan, and that a rape occurs with the character in the music video. Other times, they don't realize that there's a parallel between reality and fantasy in which Madonna doesn't fall in love with a saint literally, because in her dreams he's a saint, and in reality he's a real person wronged.
