*Warning: lengthy comment ahead. also, spoilers for undertale, i suppose.* I rarely ever consume anime, like, at all, but i had the urge to watch this video since i could probably talk anyone's head off speaking about localization and how it has affected me as a consumer. I am not joking when i say that the only people who could ever do a real, 1 to 1 translation of their work are the original writers themselves, because everyone else is bound to mess it up. it's just... bizarre how translating something is when you have someone else do it for you without your input. my favorite example of this is undertale, which was translated by a team, but was supervised by toby himself. There were a lot of moments were things simply were flat out untranslatable without sacrificing important context; however, unlike in these examples, the writer himself (in this case toby) was able to tell the team flat out what his intention with the writing was and it resulted in them writing around these issues. a great example of this is how fanart often depicts frisk as being hugged by sans as they die, and this is because, if i remember correctly, there wasn't a good translation of the phrase "get dunked on" that sans uses when he betrays you, so in the japanese version he says something along the lines of "what? can't you handle a hug?" or something like that. IMAGINE if guys like the ones you were talking about had translated that! hell, IMAGINE how much of the game's original meaning would have been lost due to people just going "huh. i don't like this message very much. I'm going to """fix""" it!" Being a translator isn't about your ideas. it's about getting across other people's ideas as clearly as possible for more people to see! and if those ideas aren't of your liking, then you should AT LEAST have the decency and respect to not put your words in someone else's mouth! now THAT'S some colonizer shit! We are translators, not editors! we aren't supposed to ""fix"" things just because they don't align with what we think! the message other people get across with their work should be their issue! even if it sucks! or it makes you uncomfortable! granted, all of my translations have been of RPG maker games, and they've all been for private usage. but my point still stands! let other people make their own mind about a work! why would you choose to translate something if you aren't going to do your work to begin with! it's like being a mobile company, and then getting lazy and breaking things because you don't feel like moving them along carefully just because you don't like them! that's not your job! And this all boils down to the central issue: money. they all do these lazy translations because "might as well have some fun with it". AND THAT'S THE STANDARD YOU WANT TO SET FOR THE INDUSTRY!? THAT YOU ARE UNDERPAID BY THE BIG ANIME CORPO OR WHATEVER SO YOU ARE GOING TO TRANSLATE HOWEVER YOU LIKE JUST BECAUSE OF MONEY!? I'D RATHER READ A TRANSLATION MEANT FOR A SPECIFIC REGION THAT BOTHERS IN BEING APPEALING AND ACCURATE, EVEN IF IT'S NOT UNIVERSAL (having a translation have a british accent, or a very pronounced australian accent since those are the people who translated it, and who it's meant for), THAN READING A TRANSLATION MADE IN A NEUTRAL, STANDARD AND BORING ENGLISH JUST TO HAVE THE NET BE CAST AS WIDE AS POSSIBLE! It's the little things, you know? i could go and on about this, but this comment got wayyyy to lengthy already. TL;DR: translation is not moving words from one language to another and fixing what you don't like. translation is moving the ideas without loosing them. that should be the top priority. at least in my eyes.

1:47:44-1:52:05 Yeah I found it really annoying and lame that most of Amy's moves are tarot card related and not her hammer because this game insists on making that a personality trait for her and yes you can use the tarot cards but the thing is that's what she talks about in this game and uses them for attacks and it seems that the game tries to "justify" this by saying that her hammer dosnt work in the digitaized world or whatever but she uses it for the quick cyloop so I dont even know. And yeah her character does get worse in the update with the whole "I'm going to do things myself I don't need sonic" thing shes got going on with the whole game but the thing is this was alredy explored in SONIC ADVENTURE. Once again they are tredding old ground like Tails and having these characters learn things that they learned over 20 years ago once again another connection with the Star Wars sequel trilogy and how they have Luke learn things he alredy leanred in the original trilogy. Also with Amy being a damsal in distres? When was she ever that exept her introduction in Sonic CD? The writing just somehow got worse from the 2022 base game to the 2023 story update its just absolutely baffling and yeah the voice acting does make me cringe as well luhmayo of course 9:17p.m. 8/1/2024
1:42:19-1:44:19 I disagree with your take on the music on this game and Sonic Forces. For me I think the OST to Forces was really good it had great stage music and cutscene music. With Frontiers while I do like the vocal themes those arent the only ones that come to mind. I like the overworld themes for Kronos, Rhea, and Ouranos Island because of the really calm atmospheric pieces ranging from calm to very dramatic. The minigame music SOS Backup is really good, the hacking minigame, and the result music are really good too. The stage music is really cool too I know that the EDM starting in Forces has had people split but I came from not really liking Forces OST for years to really liking it when I got the CD for it in March of 2022. The same for Sonic Frontiers while I never thought the music was mediocre I just didn't think much about it I mean when I first played the game the first track that actually got my attention was 1-6 and 4-6 but when I got the OST the same month it came out I started to notice more tracks and then more and more on repeated full listenings over months of time. I like your videos. You're not immune to criticism, however. 12:37 I feel like in insane man whenever someone brings up NEO:TWEWY's (not TWEWY NEO btw) translation. I'll concede that Nagi is handled annoyingly. However, taking single lines out of context like this (or appending your own, simplified context, as you have done) is doing a disservice to the localization; the approach for this game was NOT line-by-line. They took the entire scene and translated/localized it wholesale, and it should be critiqued as such. While the localizers may have changed things that didn't need changing, it can't be argued that they cared about the context of the dialogue they were localizing... unlike some armchair localizers, who don't even care about the work they are critiquing. Case in point: 13:01 That is not "Rinto." This game has no character named "Rinto." That guy with the shaved side is Fret. Rindo is the guy with the mask, the one you primarily play as. This is not difficult to research; you play a trailer in the background with myriad character names. Yes, I am nitpicking. Given the message of this video so far, I hope you'll understand. Perhaps you should have left this section on the cutting room floor, or better yet, on Twitter where this kind of uneducated, dispassionate and frankly posturing discourse belongs.
1:30:45-1:42:20 When it comes to the Western scripts of the 2010's with Pontac and Graph everyone blamed them for the poor writing and I was like that too but in light of recent information from January 2024 that I found out about a while ago that they had very little say is interesting because the main reason people complain about them is because they admitted they knew nothing about Sonic and because of of this information I don't really know what to think anymore or who to blame because now it seems more complicated than I and many other people thought so I guess now I have no real opinion because there's different information depending where you look it seems but I'm not going to pretend to know exactly what it is because I don't know luhmayo of course. To add to this part as well I know that there's been a decades long debate of dubbed Japanese media or subtitled and well for me I'm subbed for any media that's foreign I don't get the debate because really it boils down to a preference thing at least to some people I guess. My argument though is I'll only watch the original language in any foreign media. Number 1 is because that's the original intention by the creators, thus being the real story and script. 2 is a big part of being that dubbed foreign media especially when it comes to Japanese media being very infamous for having terrible dubs. Also as you mentioned is that when it becomes translated that they tend to take liberties and what I categorize as Americanizing with the translation clearly being more American esc dialog which is really off putting because its American slang terms being used to translate and other things with it not being the original vision. It's really only with Sonic that I feel the dubbing is nowhere near as egregious as even the worst of anime dubs even back in the Adventure games where they were especially struggling with translation issues and as I would rather listen to the original Japanese dialogue to the games that were originally written in Japan I don't mind the English dubs. It sucks because on paper Guilty Gear sounded like something right up my alley. An anime fighting game with a heavy metal/hard rock aesthetic to it. Heavy metal and rock were built into the core of the past guilty gear games and with Bridget it followed that old school David Bowie/Glam rock ethos that you can still be a guy no matter what the hell you were wearing. This kind of mindset that’s being pushed now is not metal it’s not rock it’s a pussified politically correct version of Guilty Gear’s past greatness that was all because they wanted a “global audience” they already fucking had. How is it “progressive” to push this idea that someone isn’t what they identify as because of our perceptions of masculinity and femininity? Thats literally the opposite of progressive! I thought they were against gender stereotypes not for them! If you’re a guy and you wanna be cute you’re a guy. If you’re a guy who identifies as a girl you’re a girl but we shouldn’t be forcing people into these boxes because of stereotypes. That’s why I can’t support this Bridget decision in good conscience because it pushes a regressive view on gender expression. It’s the same idea as the bigoted assholes they claim they hate just waving a different flag.
The example of a good localization is i think from the VN called Raging Loop, even if you only know basic japanese you can hear that what the character said is what the text said

I have infinitely more respect for a thin story that gets out of the way than a "good" (for a video game) story that's actually mediocre and wastes my time. If I want to watch a linear narrative play out, I can watch any random movie and there's a 95% chance it will be better. Games need to learn to stop talking unless they actually have something to say. In this landscape it's restraint that deserves respect, not ambition.
And now my next prediction about Strive came true with them utterly watering down Dizzy's design. And I think that is the really sad thing here, that they have gotten this predictable.
Even worse that Ramlethal, I-No, Baiken, Jack-O, Elphelt and ABA still had fanservice designs compared to Dizzy. And yet there's Venom of all characters (who is the male character) that got watered down too. If this wasn't enough that they even add guest characters from the western studio/company over some Japanese franchises (including BlazBlue of all things) that had some characters to have potential to be guest character is just putting a salt on wounds for me.
This will change and we're seeing it already. If you don't support something long enough it will become non profit and abandoned. Just don't play it if you don't like it and it will go back to normal. Or as some people like to say "go woke go broke" that isn't even a joke lmao.
The Kanji and Naoto misunderstading by the loud vocal minority is the most annoying thing ever. Not understanding such important characters and their arcs is nos understading like half of the game. Would also like to shoutout the annoying people regarding Giselle in Bleach.
This short is basically giving companies that make shitty stories a scapegoat for them to blame it on ESG and SBI. No, running your story by an editor so they can check if you're accidentally being racist or sexist is not going to magically transform a great story into a shitty one. A shitty story will always be shitty.
