Strictly speaking this is not 'The Star of the County Down'. Without the early 20th century lyrics this is simply a version of the mid 17th century English tune 'The Clean Contrary Way'. The tune became associated with numerous English folk songs but especially the folk carol 'Dives and Lazerus' and composer Ralph Vaughan Williams' orchestral piece 'Five Variants of Dives and Lazarus'.
The title of this reel comes maybe from the town of Ste-Anne New-Brunwick: le reel de Ste-Anne. Few people know that it was composed by Joseph Allard, a french-canadian composer. This reel is known around the world. The reason it looks so celtic is that when Allard went to Scotland, he spent his days in pubs noting the music at drinking guiness too. You're wonderful musicians. Thank you!
