This is genuinely amazing!! What kind on clay are you using on the face, arms, legs and tail? If its oven bake clay, how does it harden if at all?
@WhizzerStudios
@WhizzerStudios 8 месяцев назад
Hi! I used DAS air dry clay. I didn't like it as first because it's a bit fibrous to work with, but it takes detail really well when smoothed out with water, resists cracking, and seems to be pretty durable. It's about $12 for a pound. The claws are Super Sculpey.

I've noticed that paleontology enthusiasts and paleoartists tend to be very creative people, as there is a good bit of speculation put into reconstructing and reimagining these beautiful animals. @WhizzerStudios
@WhizzerStudios Год назад
It's the escape artist of artistic accuracy! I know it's been reinterpreted as a shore feeder rather than a powerful swimmer, but is the diorama outside the range of possibility now? It's more the shape of the sail I've been worried about.

@@WhizzerStudios I can't remember exactly what was said in the spinosaurus paper but I am pretty sure that it said that it would roll around latterly in water, you can read the paper yourself and correct me if I'm wrong, always love learning 👍
@WhizzerStudios
@WhizzerStudios Год назад
Thanks for persuading me to actually read an article! I wasn't in the habit at the time I made this, though I did try really hard to read the work of people who had read the research firsthand. The conclusions of the new paper are that spinosaurus was likely a biped while on land, and a slow, awkward swimmer that was too buoyant to fully submerge and had a stiff tail that was not effective for locomotion, and may have been primarily a display feature. It also was frequently found inland, away from the water, so it could better be described as semiaquatic than aquatic. Thankfully, I came across a post by palaeoartist Mark Witton, written soon after the tail was found: (markwitton-com.blogspot.com/2020/05/spinosaurus-2020-thoughts-for-artists.html He references an analysis by Don Henderson, one of the authors of the new article, arguing for the bipedal stance with a center of gravity close to the hind legs. Looks like they were on to a few things a couple of years before the publication of the new article. All of this encouraged me to take a conservative approach with this model. I kept it in a shallow environment with its feet almost touching the ground. I also kept it in a swimming posture to avoid choosing a walking posture while those were up for dispute. It may not have been a powerful swimmer, but there is current evidence that most theropods could swim anyway. Overall, I like to think my diorama is in keeping with the new findings, but bears a few errors that reflect my developing understanding of its anatomy in 2020. If I did it again, I would give it a more rounded sail, more muscular hind-legs and tail, and a more pronounced pubic bone. Thanks for reading that text dump. My gut reaction was to be defensive, but I ended up learning something! I hope you'll stick around and offer your input on future sculpts!

Yeah, I might redo the mouth some time. It's not shown in the video, but I've tried using some construction paper to add some use muscles in the cheeks as well, as those are important. I'd love to see some pictures of yours!

@@WhizzerStudios one thing I also have to say is that slit pupils are typically a trait of nocturnal animals, so unless velociraptor is nocturnal it should have round pupils. Still love the work, fantastic!!
@WhizzerStudios
@WhizzerStudios Год назад
@@princevermilion8799 Yeah, I STILL agonize over that decision. Some studies support the idea that it hunted at dawn and dusk, or even nocturnally, based on the size of its sclerotic rings. I was really banking on the idea that it hunted like a cat, I suppose.
