Saltwater fishing in the Wando River and other areas surrounding Charleston S.C. Every now and then trips to Florida. I like to share my fishing trips to encourage my visitors to go fishing!! I also like to share tips or tricks that have been shared with me to help you catch more fish!! I'm not an expert or pretend to be!! I enjoy editing and posting videos. Hopefully they're helpful to everyone!! Let's Go!!!
Been down to the dock a few times but only out in the boat 2 times this year. Sometimes it's tough to get out on the water. Hopefully I'll get out soon. Have you been out?
If you follow the path in the video just as the water is getting to the grass on the incoming tide, you should be able to at least see some reds pushing. You can also watch the Winter Tips video, which is basically in the same part of Guerrin Creek. Hope this helps. Good luck!!
Thx for watching the video!! That spot is in the Woodville area just above the Paradise Island boat landing. I'll try to send you a couple of screen shots. Good luck!!
Evidently, I can't add screenshots. If you go to Google Maps and find Paradise Island boat landing, it should be the 5th or 6th dock heading up river. If you pause my video, you should be able to figure it out via landmarks. Let me know how you do.
Great video. I’m in hobcaw and will come up your way. Curious how you advise fishing on rainy days v cloudy days v sunny days. How much does time of day matter? Winter? Spring, summer fall….etc.
Thanks for the question! I’m going to encourage you to check into barometric pressure and how it affects fishing. You’ll find that rainy and cloudy days will have a lower pressure and sunny days will have a higher pressure. Experts say the best BP for fishing is between 29.70-34.40 and that the best time to fish is just before a storm moves in or about 12-24hrs after a storm moves out. I have found that in the Winter getting up at the crack of dawn isn’t as important as when fishing spring, summer, and fall. Since the water temps are low in the winter and I prefer fishing for Redfish, I have found that fishing in the warmer part of the day 2hrs before and 2hrs after low tide works best for me as the reds will move into shallow water to get warm. Spring and fall it’s usually a feeding frenzy as the fish are fattening up from the winter months in the Spring and fattening up for the winter in the fall. I prefer timing it so that I’m fishing 2hrs before and 2hrs after low tide in the spring and fall as well. However, you can almost fish anytime of the day in the spring and fall and catch fish. During the summer months when it’s crazy hot and the water temps are up, I find that it’s better to fish early morning and late evening. Keep in mind that’s what I prefer. However, if I get the chance to go fishing then I’m going to go fishing!! There are so many things that factor into fishing. In many cases you just need to go fishing and take notes. On one trip you may crush the fish and on the next trip you might get skunked fishing at the same fishing spot with the same lures. That’s just fishing!! As you know we live in an incredible sanctuary! Just enjoy your time on the water! Hope this helps!!
I usually would use a 1/10. When fishing the flats I'm usually sight fishing so I'm not wanting something to heavy that would make too much of a splash to scare the reds. But other things to consider. If the current is really moving over the flats, or the wind is really blowing (which sucks) then you might need something a little heavier to be able to cast and keep it from getting carried out of the strike zone too quickly. I hope that makes since and helps.
Thanks so much for the comment and the sub. I really do appreciate it!! I've been trying to get some underwater footage for a while. Where do you normally fish? Tight lines
Thx Brother!! Same here! I think since I new that the fish were there it was worth a try! What did you think of the Dock cam? That was shot on the GoPro that you gave me to help start this channel.
Thanks for the credit! Now that the Reds have been chased around for 2 months by the Dolphins I switch my fishing to around high tide searching the marsh areas near where I have found the schools on low tide and dead sticking the Gulp where I see the Reds shaking the grass from the bottom. New meaning to the quote from Paul Newman, I ‘m shaking boss!
I believe in giving credit where credit is due!! Some people get offended when others offer knowledge!! Thanks again for your last comment and this comment. I might just try your high tide techniques!! Thanks again!!
I have fished the Wando River but mainly the Hobcaw creek where me and a buddy won a trout tournament!! Great content that most people don't share Good for you friend
Congrats on the tourney win!! Thanks for responding!! I don't mind sharing to help those that don't have the time or maybe they're new to fishing and need some guidance on where some fishing spots are located. As you know you can fish a spot one day and tear them up and then the next day get skunked.
bACK IN THE 80;S i USED TO FISH UNDER A BIGWe could BRIDGE on the Wando. We would cut crab in half and drop it un the bottom. You could only do it during low tide. My Aunt and Uncle had a house there right off the river. We would visit about every year. We caught huge red fish doing that.
As always, great seeing these videos. Looks like we are neighbors in the N. Wando! Do you ever utilize plastics under a bobber? I use voodoo shrimp usually under a bobber for trout with shrimp procure.
What's funny is I always have popping corks with me, but I haven't used them in a while. I know that they definitely work. Maybe I'll rig one of my rods up and try it next time that I get to go fishing!!
Thanks, Gabe. We weren't even going to go further up the creek due to the fact we couldn't see any movement at all. The drone definitely saved the day!!
Jack, excellent video! I really enjoyed listening to your thoughts while searching for fish. Very insightful and I feel like I learned a lot about patients watching you negotiate that school. Thanks for posting
Well...several things. First, I see you have a new way of carrying your rods on the Golf Cart...nice. Second, the hook in the hand is priceless! Third...what a great day out on the water...weather looked great, and the fish were biting. Fourth, I remember the day that the drone saved us from being skunked...that was a great day! And finally, I miss you my Brother...so glad when you post a video...reminds me of all the great times we had fishing and sharing our thoughts on why fish do what they do! lol Looking forward to when you come and visit me in Florida and we fish out of my boat! Much Love to you and all the Miller's! Happy New Year!
Thanks, Brother!! I made the new rod holders out of an old f150 soft tonneau cover brackets and pvc. It was a great day, too bad you moved to Florida!!😂. Have you found all of the good fishing spots down there. I'm looking forward to getting down there and catching some fish. I'm glad the hook broke off in my hand, and not while I had a HUGE fish on😂
3” Gulp shrimp. Pearl White if the water is a little dirty. New Penny if the water is clear. Accurate cast just ahead of the swimming fish, no bite because you are too far ahead leave the bait on the bottom and short hop it when the fish get on top of the bait. Super cold water and they are finicky keep casting, sooner or later you will hit close enough to cause a reaction strike.
Thanks so much, Tony!! I'm glad that you loved the video!! Quick question. What are things that you look for in a fishing video that would help you decide to watch it? Thx in advance!!
I had 2 choices... pull the hook and go fishing or go home!! I think I made the correct decision. I was running to get the rod after seeing a ton of redfish pushing. Snapped the hook off, so I grabbed another rod, and two cast later caught a redfish. Pulled the hook out, loaded up the boat, and went fishing!😂
Thanks for the great video, Looks like a great day on the water. How shallow does Guerin Creek get at low tide? Are you pretty comfortable maneuvering at dead low or do you wait for an incoming tide to move in to the creek? Boat newbie looking for advice.
Hey Jim, I'm so sorry about messing up the reply. I replied a couple of weeks ago, but evidently, I just replied to myself. Still working on my RU-vid skills. 😅 Thanks so much for watching the video!! What's the draft on your boat? Do you have a trolling motor, or will you be using an anchor?
