Vanakkam sir ! As you know i am a big fan of yours , only because of you i stated to learn how to play a saraswati veena , this veena is very old almost 70 to 80 yrs, it is my friend's grandmother's veena ( she died a week ago ) they were throwing it away so i took it , now i am facing a problem in the svar sthanas . Sir if i tune my first string to E, will ' re' come on 1st fret or 2nd fret and similarly will the swar sthana or 'dha ' be also different if the string is tuned to e or f . Actually my school music teacher helped me but he follows hinduastani sangeet acc to him 2nd fret is re .... so does the swar sthanas of some swaras change if the string is tuned to 'e' or 'f' Kindly help I came here after watching madhuwanti didi's video in which she explained how you helped her in her rudra veena making journey Thank you
Vanakkam pandit ji , sir i love raaj durga ! The jhala of raag durga is so amazing, but when this jhala is played on the rudra veena, it seems to be really fast-paced, but on chindra veena if wasn’t that fast ( i guess) please guide
Thanks Kapish for your comments, glad you liked it. The pace of jhala is determined by the instrument and the individual's choice. There are no rules but in general, faster jhalas are more appropriate for sitar/sarod than Veena. The beauty of Veena lies in its slower paced movements.
I am a 32 year Man, with zero experience or knowledge in any form of music. However i have recently aquired a taste for indian classical music and i now have a strong desire to learn the Veena and Sitar. Should I pursue this, if yes were ,how and with which of 2 instrument should i start with. Please suggest 🙏
Thank you for reaching out. Sitar may be an easier instrument to start with, its less demanding on the fingers and body than a Veena. Having said that, there are different difficulty levels at which sitar can be learnt and played. Also, since Indian classical music is heavily based on vocalisation, it may help to learn a little bit of vocal along with sitar. It all depends on how much time you can devote to learning and practicing. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

@@Chandraveena sure sir!🙏 It is very very very very unfortunate extremely unfortunate that the Indian classical heaven and this great instrument all lie somewhere in a dark corner of the internet with just a few hundred views. I want to work on this aspect. I think people have systematically kept it hidden because once if somebody gets into Indian classical then all the unimportant businesses which are many including bollywood will go bankrupt. They do not want it. We need people to propagate this music and I want to work for that.

The strings really ring for a long time, like a Rudra veena. In Carnatic (Saraswati) veena concerts, one hardly ever has an opportunity to hear slow, meditative playing like this.

I don’t think I’ve heard Raag Desi before, but I do know I’ve listened to Desi Todi once. It’s so enjoyable to just listen and watch as a raga unfolds while I read and think about stuff in my room, like I’m doing this beautiful but cold morning. As always, the Chandraveena is a delightful instrument, and the pakhawaj in the composition portion provides another dimension to enjoy. I have seen Shri Sanjay ji before several times, not only with Balachander but also with rudra veena players including, I believe, at least once with Mohi Bahauddin Dagar sahab. He is very skilled and talented at the pakhawaj indeed. My many pranaams to both my friend Balachander ji and to Sanjay ji as well. ❤❤❤ 🙏 🙏 🙏
Thanks Tim for your very kind and wonderful words. In my opinion, Desi and Desi Todi are two different Ragas. It is possible that they're often incorrectly inter changeably used.
@@Chandraveena I agree. According to my history here on RU-vid, I have heard Desi before, by Vidushi N. Rajam on violin and by late Pandit Nikhil Banerjee on sitar. The Desi Todi was on sitar by Vidushi Mita Nag. I guess this must have been awhile ago, since I remember the Desi Todi but not the other recitals of Desi. I’ll have to listen to the other two Desi recordings again, especially Nikhil Banerjee’s, as a comparison to what you have done in dhrupad style.
@@Chandraveena I listened to Raag Desi by Nikhil Banerjee this morning, and while it was quite good-unsurprisingly-I think your version on Chandraveena is my favored of the two, probably because of my love for dhrupad and the sound of Chandraveena and pakhawaj.

An excellent lecture and demonstration of the sitar, surbahar and Chandraveena with the similarities and differences clearly pointed out and explained in a simple way that can be easily understood. I enjoy all three instruments and have increased my knowledge about them with your teachings on them. I am not a musician but I love music from all over the world. I think it's a wonderful instrument. I've heard it, I've read the report on it's construction. The artist, Noor Zehra has put in lot of effort in making and playing the instrument.
