Design to Visualization! I’ll be posting a new video each week demonstrating Advanced Tools and Workflows, covering a multitude of design and visualization programs, currently being implemented within the AEC industry. If you have any specific requests on what you’d like to see, or would like to collaborate on these, feel free to DM me here or at stevewalz@hotmail.com!
great video, thanks for the clear commentary. Question: if I try to edit the settings to define the coord sys after import, will it mess up my drawing? I dont really want to restart my project but if necessary i will! Edit: I'll google this question also ;p
Excellent video. Thanks for taking the time to share. I am just starting my dynamo journey and struggle with list management. Any tips and tricks would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for this introduction it was very helpful. I used this technique for extracting start and end stationning for profile entities from a profile because the basic table from Civil3D only included PVI.
Hi Stephen, in the Gravity Pipe Property Set definitions i see: PartSizeName, 3DLength, MinimumCover... but in the link that you add i can't find the relative code to insert in the formula. can you post the Part Context code to add at the formula? thnks
@sanjanagupta9152 I actually presented on this at Autodesk University 2022 and build the dynamo scripts...here's a link to the recording and material: www.autodesk.com/autodesk-university/class/Leveraging-Civil-3D-Properties-Sets-Design-and-Collaboration-Purposes-2022. Let me know if you have any further questions!
Is there anything to help if the point cloud is not automatically referencing the geolocation on civil 3d? I have the same Datums set for both recap and civil 3d
Assuming you’ve double checked units are identical in both Recap and Civil 3D as well prior to inserting? Maybe play around with the INSUNITS in C3D? If that doesn’t resolve, I’d be happy to take a look…feel free to send me a message at stevewalz@hotmail.com to troubleshoot further
Greetings, I have never managed to import Infraworks fbx with nondisplaced texture to any program. Except 3ds Max. Even then, exporting fbx file from max gives the same, sad reluts. All terrain textures are misplaced. It is a case on Sketchup, Rhino, Simlab Composer etc. Is there any fix fir the texture issue when exporting/importing fbx Infraworks files? Thank you in advance if any.
Thanks for the question! I’ve seen that occur with 3DS Max before, but haven’t tried in the other programs you mentioned. That said, I had a solution a few years ago that may do the trick, but need to dig it up. Feel free to reach out to me at stevewalz@hotmail.com in the meantime.
Hullo, thank you for your sign. As far as I am aware the only possibility to get the Infraworks fbx export with correctly placed texture is to pass through 3ds mac and there make same adjustments concerning texture. Alas, I ignore the suggested changes to be applied within 3ds Max.
Great to see there exists a solution to this C3D deficiency. Is there a way to setup different clearances depending on the intersecting networks i.e. if my Storm-Water clearance is 12" but my Sanitary-Water clearance is 18"? Is there a way to analyze additional networks beyond san, stm, wat? Such as grey water or natural gas?
You want to make sure "insunits" in Civil is set correctly (21 is U.S. survey feet), otherwise the cloud will not be correct. Another tip is use LAZ rather than LAS (the file size will be significantly smaller and the import to Recap is much faster). Lidar tools "laszip" works well for that purpose.
Unfortunately that aspect isn't supported in Civil IFC exports at this time. IFC 4.3 is still being ratified, but vendors are developing MVDs that will identify Civil Infrastructure objects properly, rather than exporting as BuildingElementProxies.
Hi Mahmoud! Here are a couple links that should provide some guidance: knowledge.autodesk.com/support/civil-3d/learn-explore/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/How-to-use-property-sets-to-populate-a-pipe-with-its-upstream-and-downstream-structures-in-Civil-3D.html and docs.autodesk.com/CIV3D/2013/ENU/API_Reference_Guide/html/73fd1950-ee31-00b8-4872-c3f328ea1331.htm (scroll down to enumerations). Feel free to reach out to me at stevewalz@hotmail.com if you need further assistance!
Hi Rich! So this script was created for a prior customer and is available for purchase and download (along with a few others) at: designtovisualization.com/content-library/. Fee free to reach out if you have any questions (stevewalz@hotmail.com)! Thanks! Steve
Thanks...how do you deal with the fbx export creating new generic material names that change if you add new materials in Infraworks.. for me it messes up my Lumion workflow as it redefines the material name when you refresh the model if you add new material given the material names generated on export are "material (#)"
Unfortunately I haven't quite figured out a good workflow for that one yet. Anytime I upload the FBX in Lumion, my materials revert back to the original state they were from InfraWorks. I feel like there almost needs to be a Lumion plug-in inside of InfraWorks to allow for seamlessly migrating updates, similar to rendering plug-ins for Revit. If you come across any tips or tricks, please let me know!
How I will detect clash of I have xref of wet and dry utility, plan and profile. Mostly I see designer design all utilities in civil 3d then check interference. But in my case I have xref of utility. Please suggest. Thanks
Unfortunately there are some limitations at the moment with Dynamo when dealing with xrefs...you'd need to data reference into the current drawing and perform the clash detection. Feel free to reach out directly if you have any further questions (stevewalz@hotmail.com)!
Hi Stephen If you don't want to "dumb it down" have a look at Civil Designer and their IFC export. They also have full on integration between modules so many of the steps you had to go through in Dynamo are cut out.
I leveraged TorchAR; Unfortunately, this product is no longer available though. I would recommend looking into Unity, but would require coding knowledge
thank you for this it was really helpful, can we go ahead and create 3D solids from the surfaces using Dynamo, I am looking for this. Please let me know if it is possible.
Very welcome! Yes, if you install the C3D Toolkit Package within Dynamo, you will gain access to a whole bunch of custom nodes, one of which is called 'TinSufaceExtensions.CreateSolids'. Let me know if that get's the results you were looking for!
Hey Stephen nice video, thanks. In the first bit you did mentioned you applied the excavation model o shape the terrain, could you do a video explaining how that is done? I often get landscape files in the form of dwg or dgn and don't know how could I make the terrain match those files. Thanks
