NZ-based composer of all things cinematic - from lush orchestral textures to sweeping synth soundscapes, and everything in between. Striving to paint pictures through sound, with the ultimate goal of helping people to share their stories.
Thank you! For the score, all of it was already engraved on Dorico, so I just screen-recorded the Dorico file, cropped out the bits I didn't need, and then inverted the colours on my video editing program (Davinci Resolve).
Haha, I've never been one for making tutorial videos where I'm talking - too self conscious lol. In terms of mixing, my workflow is actually very simple, and I tend to do it as I compose (which a lot of people will frown on, but hey it works). For orchestral stuff like this, I always just use the stock Logic EQ and reverb (Space Designer), and not much else. As for the libraries, they're listed in the description of the piece this snippet was taken from. I'll always maintain that it doesn't matter which libraries you use though, rather it's all about how well you know them (and also how well you know the orchestra as an ensemble!). I'm also a big advocate for playing everything into your DAW via a MIDI keyboard rather than drawing the notes and automation in. Make sure to constantly ride that modwheel too, especially for the brass! The orchestration more or less follows established practices - in other words, I always write as if I'm writing for live players. But yeah, if you have questions about anything in particular, let me know!
The Deluxe Soundtrack perhaps may be one of my favorite game soundtracks of all time, and for you to combine all of my favorite parts into one. Beautiful. 👏
Definitely can't deny that at all! Being in the early stages of my musical career, I'm still in the process of finding my own unique stylistic voice. Part of that process involves creating a tonne of music that sounds similar to existing work that has inspired me, so it should come as no surprise that a lot of my output sounds somewhat generic. But having said that, I'll always maintain that it's not necessary to break new ground with every single piece you create - in fact, it's a pretty unrealistic expectation to have of anybody, let alone yourself. Rather, I just focus on creating *something*... and occasionally I'll stumble across something that makes me go "hey, I haven't heard that before" :) As a side note, this piece did get selected to be recorded by our national orchestra in October, so I must be doing something right!
Amazing quality, Sai. I've just met your work and it hits hard. Thank you for the great piece of work. Is there any platform available where we can buy your music to use in videos or this isn't planned yet?
That really means a lot, thanks so much for stopping by and listening! At this stage I haven't published any of my music to be licensed for videos, but I'd definitely look into it if enough people were interested. However, this piece was written for a collab album and distributed separately from my other work, so it's covered by RU-vid's ContentID unfortunately. If there's any other release you'd like to use though, get in touch - I'm sure we could work something out! :)
I just got recommended your work 10 minutes ago. Your ability to balance between different sample libraries is pretty darn good, and the mix is nice too. Keep going!
I've amassed a sizeable collection over the years haha - the woodwinds are a mix of Hollywood Woodwinds (East West), 2001 Piccolo Shire (Soundpaint) and Infinite Woodwinds (Aaron Venture). A full plugin list is on the description of the full piece (link in this video's description). Thanks for checking this out!
It's definitely taken practice! But creating a coherent transition between two contrasting sections of music is one of my favourite compositional challenges to tackle :)
Someone else asked why I missed Elegy for the Rings too, so I'll copy over the same reply I gave them :) The two main themes I really wanted to pay tribute to were "Echoes of the Eye" and "Older Than the Universe," since those were the pieces that personally moved me the most. The other two themes I included ("Travelers' Encore" and the "End Times" melody) were the most natural choices for transitioning smoothly between the first two themes. I absolutely agree that "Elegy for the Rings" is a heartbreakingly beautiful piece (and a very key part of the EotE soundtrack!), but in the arrangement of this particular cover, it would've stuck out a bit too much (mainly on account of the different time signature it's in). But having said that, thanks so much for checking out the cover and commenting!
Cheers Liam! Would've loved to submit this for Todds, but I'd have to cut out so much of the percussion to make it work haha. Having said that, I did submit it for the NZ Composer Sessions, so let's see what happens!
Surely the NZSO makes an exception and just hires more percussionists smh. I hope the composer session goes well, would love to hear this live! @@VIUSmusic
@@yoonpark8311About a year I think, although that was partly because I had a bunch of other projects that I needed to focus on. Worth it though, I'm pretty stoked with how it turned out!
@@VIUSmusic Oh wow, I didn't realize you recognized me on Bandcamp. haha I bought it when this song ended. And also, No problem! I hope to hear more orchestra music later on!
