We had one. The head gasket failed at 50K and I’d been driving it around all night with the check engine light on. Dad fixed it and traded it immediately.
I bought a 1981 Rabbit Diesel brand new. I was single and all my friends made fun of me. It was super slow. I had a hard time merging onto I-95 here in Miami, many times almost hammered by trucks doing 70 mph. It was super economical. 4 years later at 98,000 miles the water pump started leaking. I took it to the local garage to replace it. He somehow damaged the seal on the mechanical injector pump and diesel coated my timing belt, causing it to come off causing extreme damage inside the engine. The mechanic said it wasn't his fault. I sold the car for $100. I should have bought a gas Toyota.
Nice video! I got one of these and it's awesome! Try blipping the throttle when shifting up gears for a smoother experience. 1st to 2nd gear at just under 2K RPMs if cruising or 2.5K when going faster.

Wow! That whole setup is just phenomenal! My biggest fear letting that go would be having it end up with some idiot that paints everything inside the camper white and ruins all the great 70s charm. Never been a big fan of air bags though. Makes the ride too squishy for me to be comfortable and it just creates more potential for something to fail.
