Ridiculous. There is only one skier that was so utterly good and way ahead of his competitors that they actually had to change the rules in order for him to not have won the world cup even before halfway through the season: Ingemar Stenmark. He is number one and then there's empty space behind him for a loooong time, and then the rest of the runners up come. Once, he won by a scaresly believable 4.06 seconds!! In a sport where you usually win by some thousands of a second, it's like Usain Bolt would've won the 100 meter sprint by 40 meters.
So what makes a skier the GOAT - races won? Olympic gold medals? World Cup wins? So many criteria ... but I think at one time Moser-Proell had the highest winning percentage of all women skiers, so maybe that was the criteria used. It's a moot point now anyway, since the current winning percentage leader is Shiffrin, so she is definitely Number One. A generational talent.
The bigger the race, the better he performed. His World Cup record was very good but not exceptional. Yet 3 Olympics in a row he won gold. He's a skier that excels under pressure.
Rating based on WC points seems to be heavily biased towards the modern era. In the 21st Century there are more events/points available to accumulate in any given season. For example: no Super-G points were available in the WC before 1983.
Should have showed at least one GS clip of Stenmark. I watched GS from trailside lake placid 1980. On a fall away turn and that styrofoam man made snow, EVERY skier chattered through the turn except him. A different equipment era than Ligety, but I think they are equal on smoothness. I’ve seen pics of Stenmark with edge angle similar to Ted.
Some weeks ago there was a documentary about Stenmark and his fantasic career on the Swedish telly. An amazing story. One thing was really interesting and that was that he found that his skis became better later in the season because the edges were grinded down and the skis got a touch of waist, so they simply carved better. Remember that this was in the era of long straight skis before the carving ski was invented.
@@speedkingz Yes, Winning Instincts sets the record straight... in a way. The problem with Killy is that he retired when he was 24 years old, and thus his overall record doesn't show his worth. They didn't call him "King Killy" for nothing!
These are amazing times. First Hirscher defeats seemingly eternal Stenmark's dominance, and after only a few years Odermatt is moving in to demolish them both.
Best sports moment this year ! a year with olympia, UEFA Nations Championship and many more...but Sarrazin in Kitzbühel was just insane !!!! hopefully less injuries on the slopebnext season. 🎉 thanks for the remindings
People ... Janica Kostelic was the most dominant female skier, cuz look at the time when she skied and look at the other female skier's whom she fought for medals and podiums
my brother and I were competing at park city long ago in a FIS sanctioned SL ,GS. we were watching a skier coming down towards the starting hut for the GS and remarked how good he was skiing with a different style but we thought he could maybe win the race. to our astonishment it was Stein Erickson coming to fore- run the race. he had won a olympic gold medal in GS way back in the 1950's. !! and still carving rock solid turns. the best racers had just come back from WC races placing in the top 10.
Vonn’s 43 DH record will never be broken. That’s why she’s the goat. MS along with Stenmark have mostly won Slalom and GS. I don’t see how any reasonable person can say a Slalom win is equal to a DH win. Annemarie is a close 2nd to Vonn.
Because of this sport I probably took at least 10 years off my life. My lawnmower has less metal holding it together than I do. Hindsight is 20/20. At 59 years old, I wish I never got involved in the sport.
3000m 11 min, hexagon obstacle 18.40, 1rm squat 190kg, 30x 1.5x body weight squat, 1rm bench 120kg, 18 chins, box jump 115 and brutal bench 19. But they get more or less points for being better and worse
