I've always been an athlete, but only ever wanted to run as part of the sport that I was playing. I never understood people who would run, just to run. I thought that they must be nuts. Now I am one of those nuts, spending hours pounding the pavement. I started running towards the end of 2019. I more than doubled my miles in 2020. I needed something to get me out of the house and running really helped my mental state in a profound way. I was hooked. I really committed to running in 2021 and have now run many 5k, 10k, and half marathon races. I did my first marathon in 2021. I turned 40 in 2022 and ran the NYC marathon for the first time that year. I plan to use this channel to share my thoughts on running shoes, gear, nutrition, and training to help myself and others improve on their journey towards being healthy and breaking Personal Records. C'mon and Run With Sean!

What the best in 5km race?
@runwithsean
@runwithsean 5 дней назад
From the current shoes on the market, I think that this shoe (the ASICS Metaspeed Edge Paris) is the best race shoe for a 5k. I used to lean towards the Vaporfly 2 or ADIDAS Takumi Sen 8. But this shoe is lighter than both of those and even more explosive. It’s on the narrow side and has a tight fitting upper. But as long as someone doesn’t have a wide foot and doesn’t suffer from a lot of over pronation, this shoe is the best one I’ve tried.

The Rebel V2 was so light and fast. It really was a great shoe. I liked the 3 as well but the 2 felt faster to me. I haven’t tried the V4 yet. I try to pick up a pair on sale at some point. But it seems that they and making that shoe more into a daily trainer and less of a speed shoe.

@runwithsean
@runwithsean 6 дней назад
You definitely could. It’s very durable and has great traction. But I wouldn’t really recommend it. It’s a light fast shoe. But it’s very narrow, with a tight fitting upper and the foam is on the firm side. For a daily shoe, I’d want something a bit more comfortable. This would be like daily driving a Ferrari. You could do it. But sitting in traffic, I’d rather be in a BMW.

great video, stumbled across this review & really enjoyed it. I am a slower runner (23min 5k, 1:55 HM) & this shoe is my first carbon plated shoe. I totally agree that this is a "friendly" shoe & a good introduction to carbon plated super shoes, although I can't compare it to any others, it just felt really comfortable when I run in it. I really like how soft & bouncy it is. Will use it for a HM in November. I just bought the Superblast v2 for my long runs but find them a bit too firm for me, I consider myself a heavier runner (82kg - 180lbs & 5ft 7) so I kind of wish I went for the NB Balos - I didnt want to go for a plated shoe for long / easy runs. But the SB v2 will do & I will get used to it. Will go through some of your other videos soon, & subscribed. Cheers

Great video as always, appreciate the info. I agree with all your thoughts on the shoes you mentioned. I now have about 40 miles in the Metaspeed Sky Paris. Love them, super fast. I would race them 5k, 10k and probably a half. Nothing higher. I also have about 25 miles in the Superblast 2. They took a few runs, but now are broken in and excellent for slow or steady pace. I wouldn’t choose them for speed work or races, but they can soak up miles in marathons block training. My next race is a half marathon 11/3. I’ll be wearing a new pair of Adidas Pro 3. Love the light strike pro! Good luck in Chicago and glad you’re going with a shoe you have confidence to wear. You’ll crush it! 🙌

I’m 100% with you on the Paris. If I was going for a PB in the half marathon, I’d use them for that. But wouldn’t take them longer. I have 105 miles in the Superblast 2 now. I’ve used them for a lot of long runs in this training block. I share your thoughts on that shoe as well. It’s a long run champion but I wouldn’t use them for racing. You hear everywhere people saying “nothing new on race day.” I’ve tested out my gear for the race on long runs, know what gels I’m using, etc. I think it makes the most sense to go with the tried and true AP3. I have questions about taking the ASICS, Puma or Saucony 26.2. So I figure, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. I know that Lightstike Pro softens up a bit with some break in. I put 29 miles into my new pair of AP3s in some marathon paced long runs. Now they will sit on the shelf, waiting for race day. My fitness is feeling on point right now. I’m hoping that it all comes together this time. Good luck in your race!

I feel my fitness is on point as well, looking for a PR in Nov. My A race is Mountain to Beaches in April. It’s a net downhill race many people use to BQ. I saw BITR video on Adidas Pro 4. Sounds like it’ll have a lot of changes. I will consider picking up 1 or 2 pairs of the Pro 3 if I can find a discount, big changes don’t always lead to a better shoe. I have the superblast 2 and used them for all of my marathon training, I love the shoe. I recently bought the Asics metaspeed edge paris and was going to use this as my race day shoe but as you have mentioned in a previous video, I found them a bit unstable. So I am really torn on what to do, any advice? P.S this is my first marathon and aiming to run 3:50-4 hours.
@runwithsean
@runwithsean 18 дней назад
Have you tried using the Paris in a long run or for several miles at your goal marathon pace yet? If not, I’d give that a shot and see how you feel about them going long for you. The Paris is a lighter and more propulsive shoe than the Superblast 2. But I find the Superblast 2 more stable and comfortable for longer miles. If I was trying to run a 3:50:00-4:00:00 marathon and am concerned about stability, I’d go Superblast. There is enough speed in that shoe to handle that pace and after mile 20, I’d be more confident in the comfort and stability of that shoe. I’ve run some great short races in the Edge Paris recently. But I know that I personally need more stability for 26.2. I find the Puma Deviate Elite 3 a bit more stable than the Paris, but it’s still a really narrow shoe, so I’m also wary of that one. Right now I’m going between the Endorphin Pro 4 and Adidas Adios Pro 3 for the Chicago Marathon. I just picked up a new pair of the AP3 for 50% off and put 28 miles in them between two long runs. Now I’m thinking that those will sit on my shelf until race day. They are more stable than the Paris and faster than the Saucony. Hopefully they split that difference nicely and I’m able to get a PB in Chicago. Best of luck in your marathon!

Your videos are so helpful for average runners like me. I have SC Elite V4 and love them, thinking they will be my next marathon shoe, I'd say perfect for a sub-4 attempt. Agree about the bounce vs the rocker and the overall level of comfort - I reckon if they increased the drop by a tiny amount (1-2mm!) it would be flat out perfect for me. But as it is, I'll be using it for my next marathon. Absolutely blew up on my previous marathon in the Adios Pro 3, so hoping for a more forgiving ride from this one. Thanks again for the content, truly informative and helpful for everyday runners!

Thanks! I appreciate the kind words. I agree that this shoe is more comfy and less stiff than the AP3 and sounds perfect for you to attempt a sub 4. I just took this shoe for a 22 mile long run in my marathon training and it really took care of me. I didn’t have any blisters, hot spots, or pain of any kind. My legs also felt fine all day after and the next day. So these really proved to me that they’d work great for a marathon. But I was going at a slower pace than my goal pace. I actually just picked up a new pair of AP3s and am thinking those might be my marathon shoe this time. I’m actually looking for a little more aggressiveness for this race. I’m hoping to break 3:20:00. I need a 3:10:00 for a BQ. I don’t think that’s in the cards this time. We’ll see how I feel later this month. If all else fails, I hope to be under 3:30:00 and get a personal best. We’ll see how it goes.

Sounds like you a New Balance fan who has also tried a lot of good shoes. That's great that you find this shoe so efficient. That's what we are looking for in a marathon shoe. To me the bounce that it gives me does help me to dial in a pace and cruise along without a lot of effort. But it feels best to me at a lower pace than my goal race pace. I find it's personality more laid back than The Metaspeed, Vaporfly Etc. I feel like I can run faster in those shoes, but they are also more aggressive and less suited for me to run long in the the SC Elite. I think that I'll be reaching for the SC Elite V4 for most of the rest of the long runs that I need to do in this marathon training block, but that I'll pick something else to wear on race day.

Just want to say I love your content since I’m a heavy runner at 6’2” and 230 and pronate slightly on my right foot as well. (Check your internal hip rotation because that’s my issue which led to weak right glute, fallen arch) I love the sc elite but getting a lock down isn’t the easiest. The laces and tongue are laughably thin. Based on your review I purchased the Deviate Elite 3 and I’m loving it! It’s so bouncy wow. It’s pretty stable for me but it’s not doing my right foot any favors. It also is NOT for heel strikers which I tend to do when I’m tired to give my calves a break on longer runs. It’s a half marathon shoe all the way! A wide version would be ideal! I don’t have a wide foot either. My favorite thing is it’s so easy to get a lockdown. If you try the cloudboom strike that’s another shoe that’s difficult to get a good lockdown. It’s a fine line between too tight and numbness and not getting the benefits from the plate and foam. It is firmer, but still bouncy
@runwithsean
@runwithsean Месяц назад
Thanks! Sounds like similar shoes will work for us based on our size. I've used a runners knot on every run in the SC Elite and have to tie it down tight to avoid heel slip. It's very comfortable but I just wish it had a little more pop. Glad you are liking the Puma. It's a fast fun shoe. The tongue and laces work great for getting a lockdown. But the narrowness of it does give me concern about trying to take it 26.2. If only we had someone to measure our foot and make a custom shoe with the exact right dimensions and a close fitting upper that isn't too tight. Alas, we'll have to keep trying shoes to see what works best.

@runwithsean Месяц назад
Thanks! Yeah to me the SC Elite V4 is kind of like the SC Trainer on Steroids. I'm really going to enjoy putting some long runs into this shoe. But I want it to be lighter and faster for race day. It's more of a comfortable cruiser to me and not worth $250. I do really like the Adios Pro 3. I wore my pair for the NYC Marathon in 2022. So it's over two years old and has over 100 miles on it. So I'm looking for a fresher midsole in a newer shoe for Chicago. However, I know that it is a stable marathon shoe that works for me. I actually just looked on ADIDAS website because of this comment and saw that they had the Core Black/Zero Metalic/Spark colorway for 50% off!. So I just ordered a pair. Haha. So that will now be in the mix for my Chicago shoe as well. I feel like that one was fate at $125 and they only have four sizes left, including my size 12. I really like that colorway too. Puma shoes tend to run a bit narrow in general. This one is no exception. There is a bit more room in the midfoot and toe box than the ASICS Metaspeed Edge Paris, but it’s not as wide as the Saucony Endorphin Pro 4 or NB SC Elite V4. I’d maybe look at one of those two shoes over this one for a wider foot. But both those shoes are also heavier than the Puma and not as fast. If you need width in the midfoot, the Puma is probably too narrow for you. But there is some room in the toe box. It’s too bad that you can’t really try this shoe on anywhere before buying it. In summary, will this shoe work for a wider foot? Maybe, but probably not.

Thanks for making this effort, Sean. I’m looking at the latest-1 models of all of these to add to my rotation. With the Brooks Hyperion GTS 2 I have a lovely tempo stability shoe already and am struggling to choose between the models that you present to fit the recovery + long(er) distance category. We seem to have similar feet (narrow, size 12/12.5, tending to flatfooted, mild over-pronation). Being an intermediate runner at best and with no race ambitions, I often struggle with the highly technical, ‘expert’ reviews; I don’t have great form (yet). Did you in the meantime try any of the more recent versions of these? My local pro shops don’t usually stock my shoe size, so I’m kinda ltd in what I can try and compare in one session. As such, I want to narrow down to a three shoe max shortlist. Currently that is: Asics GT-2000 12, New Balance Fresh Foam X 860 v13 and Saucony Tempus. The Tempus because it gets such rave reviews, but I’m concerned it’ll unconsciously motivate me to run faster, where I want to keep the tempo low and go far in comfort without risk of injuring myself by not recovering. I’m a lightweight guy, at 72kg, so I don’t think I need super-thick foams like in the Kayano or Vongo V6 to protect me from bottoming out.
@runwithsean
@runwithsean Месяц назад
I’d go Tempus. It’s the most versatile stability shoe that I’ve tried. I recently got the Kayano 30. But that shoe has a lot of stack. Which it sounds like you are trying to avoid. I’ve used the Tempus for easy runs in the 8:30 mile paces and sprint workouts getting into around 5:50 pace. So it can go easy, it can go fast, and it’s also pretty light for a shoe that provides stability as well as durable. Just a really good shoe overall.

@@runwithsean thanks, Sean. I never tried higher stack shoes on a proper run though. And was nudged towards Kayano (31) yesterday by a running store. @runwithsean
@runwithsean Месяц назад
I’ve been doing a lot of marathon training the last few years. So I’m often going on really long runs. It’s nice to have a soft, comfy, max cushion type shoe for those efforts. However, that type of shoe is often unstable. Soft foam plus high stack usually equals instability. Since I do have some over pronation, I wanted to give stability shoes a try. I found the Kayano 29 comfortable and stable. But also heavy and not very soft. I saw that they completely redesigned that shoe with the Kayano 30. I was hoping that shoe could be a more stable Nike Invincible/ NB Fresh Foam More. Which are both version cushioned but not as stable. It pretty much accomplished that goal. It’s no where near as soft/bouncy as those shoes. But it’s a step closer than the 29. I do have a review on the Kayano 30 on my channel. I’m actually going to wear them this morning for an easy run. It’s a great shoe if you want to feel comfortable and supported. The 31 is very similar to the 30. So if you find either on sale, they are both quality shoes. If I could just have one, Tempus or the Kayano, I’d go Tempus since it is the more versatile choice. But for longer easy efforts, I’d go Kayano. The ASICS lets you enjoy the benefits of a high stack shoe, while still remaining stable. It is basically a high stack, comfy, daily run and long run shoe. But I wouldn’t want to use it for anything fast. It’s too much shoe to turn over quickly. Advantage Tempus, it you want to do some faster efforts in the shoe as well.
@Maarten-c9f
@Maarten-c9f Месяц назад
@@runwithsean thanks, that’s very helpful. I think I should try them both side by side. And the GT2000 too, for good measure. I have no marathon aspirations and no time for very long runs (work, kids,…), so 1/2 marathon would be more than enough as a goal. Since I own and enjoy the Hyperions as a fast shoe, I was leaning towards a shoe that doesn’t overlap in terms of utilization. But now I’m reconsidering: versatility is really valuable if I travel and can only take the one pair. And I don’t see a high stack shoe working well when hitting roots & rocks in the woods either.

How does the Puma compare to the Endorphin Pro 4? I’m trying to decide between those two!
@runwithsean
@runwithsean Месяц назад
They are two different flavors of supershoe. The EP4 is wider, more stable, more comfortable and less bouncy. It has more of a cruising, rolling sensation. It to me is more like a training shoe kicked up a notch. The Puma is lighter, faster and bouncier. But it is also more narrow and less stable. It does feels like the faster option between the two. For shorter races, I'd definitely go Puma. I took the Puma out for 14 1:00 reps and the shoe absolutely sung. Felt great when I turned up the pace. If you are looking for more stability and comfort, I'd go Saucony. If you want bounce and speed, Puma. I'm trying to pick my shoe for the Chicago marathon this year and driving myself crazy. I know that the Saucony is the safer choice to get me to the end in comfort and supported. But if I really want to push for a personal best, I'm leaning Puma. To further complicate things, I have the NB SC Elite V4 coming tomorrow. I really want to use the Puma in Chicago, but I want to see if maybe the NB can split the difference between the Saucouny and the Puma and be more stable than the Puma but more propulsive than the Saucony. Review on that one will be coming soon. The Saucony is also bit more accommodating if you have a wider foot or more volume in your foot. The Puma has a tighter fit but still a decent amount of room in the toe box. My normal shoe size is a 12. I'm either a 12 or 12.5 in running shoes. A 12 works for me in the Puma. I went up to a 12.5 in the Saucony.

I remember not long ago when shoes started to cost $130 and it blew my mind...then $160-180...now $250...it's beyond me who buys these shoes other than elite athletes or just the rich. I typically spend $40-60 for a quality (IMO) shoe. And I grew up as a pretty accomplished competitive athlete in many sports like tennis, soccer, golf...having experience in training and running since I was in 2nd grade...never paid more than $60 for a shoe.
@runwithsean

Well, I guess brands are willing to push prices to what the market will accept. Every decent running shoe starts at over $100 these days and every carbon plate racing shoe starts at over $200. If you look at the start line of any major race, there are thousands of people wearing the latest and greatest $200 plus shoes. When Nike comes out with a new $285 Alphafly, they sell out instantly. Runners like shoes, and are willing to pay top dollar to get the performance that they deliver. I often try to buy last year’s model when they go on sale. But also when you think about it, if someone trained for three months of their life and put in hours and hours of work, they are willing to pay to maximize their performance on race day. Take a look at cycling. That’s some crazy big bucks. Bikes can be tens of thousands of dollars. No one needs to spend $250 on a shoe. But lots of people do.

These are a narrow shoe with a soft foam. So if someone is prone to over pronation, they will experience that in this shoe. But it’s not incredibly unstable like the Nike Vaporfly 2. I over pronate on my right side. I love the lightness, softness and bounce of this shoe. I’m still not sure if I can take it 26.2 though. I recently got the NB SC Elite 4. I’m currently between the NB, the Puma and Endorphin Pro 4 for my marathon shoe in Chicago. The jury is still deliberating. A decision will be forthcoming.

You definitely don't need a carbon shoe for every race. If you aren't going for a PB, you might as well wear a shoe that fits you well and is comfortable for those long miles. I was hoping that the Superblast 2 would be a good fit for me to use for Chicago this year. It's great for long runs and more stable than the Edge Paris, but just doesn't have the propulsive feeling that I'm looking for to try to push hard for 26.2. I'm hoping that the Puma serves me well. We'll find out in less than two months.

Excellent comparison. I have both shoes myself and concur with your thoughts. Actually, when viewing the slow mo video where you have both shoes on, you can see how your foot collapses in a lot more when wearing the PDNE3 which reinforces your point about it being a softer midsole foam. I was reminded of the slow mo video of Joshua Cheptegui when he broke the 10000m world record and an analysis of how his foot would pronate on impact. Perhaps there is a bit of Josh Cheptegui speed in yourself! 🙂Both are excellent shoes.
@runwithsean
@runwithsean Месяц назад
Haha. Yeah, I can dream about going that fast! I do have some overpronation when I run that can be made worse by narrow shoes and soft foam. Some pronation is ok, since it's a natural way of shock absorption for your body. But shoes that are extremely unstable don't work well for me. With these two, I can feel that the pronation is there but it's no where near what happens to me in the Vaporfly 2. My ankle nearly breaks off when I run long in that shoe.

Is characterizing the Asics shoe as 'less compliant in the ride' fair mindful you're comparing these shoes in a way they are not designed for use (on a synthetic rubber surface)? It's possible the foams behave differently in their designed for use (on a hard surface) and also in comparison to each other. Just sayin....

I’ve actually run in both shoes several times. All on the road before doing this one run on the track. So my opinions are based on my full experience with the shoes. Not just this one session. I have separate reviews for each shoe on my channel. I currently have 36 miles in the Edge and just ran a 5k in them today. I have about 20 miles in the Puma so far on the road. Great review, how about the fit. I have the Edge plus and they fit my wide feet great. I have the Puma Deviate Elite 2 but they are really narrow in the midfoot.. How is the Puma Deviate Elite 3? Wider than the 2?
@runwithsean
@runwithsean Месяц назад
Thanks! I have the Puma Deviate 1 and the 3. I did not pick up the 2. The 1 has possibly the tightest upper of any of my shoes. The 3 definitely has more room than the 1, but it is still a narrow shoe overall. It looks to me like the 3 has about the same profile and width as the 2, but it also gained some stack. As I said, I don't have the 2 to tell you how it compares on foot. But my best guess would be that the 3 would fit very similarly to the 2. I also have the original Metaspeed Sky, but not the Sky plus. So I'm missing that in-between generation in both shoes. The Edge Paris is even more narrow than the Puma Elite 3. So I would steer clear of that one if you have a wider foot. The Puma Elite 3 has more room in the toe box than the Edge Paris and also has a bit more width in the midfoot and heel. So that would definitely be better for someone with a wider foot. But it could still be too narrow. It's too bad that almost no stores have Puma shoes to go and try them on. I've actually never seen a Puma race shoe in a store. They don't even carry their own line of running shoes in the Puma outlets stores that I've been to. Not a single shoe in a Puma store with Nitro Foam. Let's work on distribution Puma. Have you taken a look at the Saucony Endorphin Pro 4? That is definitely the most wide foot friendly super shoe that I have tried recently. It's much wider in the forefoot, midfoot and heel than these two shoes. It's also heavier, but more stable and comfortable as well. I'm going back and forth with whether I should use the Puma Elite 3 or the Saucouny Pro 4 for the Chicago marathon this year. I like the stability and comfort of the Saucony. But I like the lightness and bounce of the Puma. Right now I'm leaning Puma. I want to take the Puma for a marathon pace long run to make my final decision there.

What shoes do you pair with this??
@runwithsean
@runwithsean Месяц назад
As the King of Gondor, these would have served you very well for long runs across middle earth. Great comfort and traction for hunting Orc. As we all know, dwarves are natural sprinters and wasted on cross country. So I’d recommend a lower stack tempo shoe for Gimli to pair with this one. That would be better for track sessions, and shorter, faster efforts. I love the Adidas Takumi Sen series for that task as well as the NB Rebel and Hoka Mach 5 or 6. The Superblast 2 can also handle daily miles. But many would consider a lower stack daily trainer like the Novablast for that. Then if you plan on racing, you may want to add a carbon shoe in there. Depending on your size, foot strike, distance races you plan on running, etc. there are so many choices in that category. I think a good running shoe rotation really needs a daily trainer and tempo shoe. Then a max cushion trainer and race day shoe are the icing on the cake. If you let me know what style of runner you are and more details about what shoes you like and what you are looking for, I could give you some recommendations. In the meantime, make sure that the blade that was broken returns to Minas Tirith. For Frodo!

@runwithsean
@runwithsean Месяц назад
I’ve run over 110 miles in my Adios Pro 3, including the NYC marathon. I still think that is one of the best super shoes out there. It’s crazy to me that Adidas still haven’t released a new version of that shoe yet though. I guess they were more focused on the crazy light and expensive Pro Evo 1. I find the LightStrike Pro foam in that shoe less bouncy than the Puma. But it still has very good energy return and it has more of an aggressive toe spring. The Puma is lighter and bouncier. The Adidas is a bit more stable than the Puma. Both shoes have very durable midsole foams and outsoles. So I don’t think you have to baby either of those shoes. You can use them both for training and racing and put a lot of miles on them without destroying them. I actually have a video on my channel about why I hate the Nike Alphafly 1. I have not purchased the 2 or the 3, since the 1 didn’t work for me. I just didn’t get along with the AirPods in the shoe and felt like it was slowing me down more than helping me to run fast. I think that may have to do with the fact that I am a giant for a distance runner and was compressing the AirPods too much. $285 is a lot to gamble to see if the 3 works for me. So I haven’t given that one a shot. I want to try the Puma out for a 5k as well as a marathon pace long run to see where I feel it really excels. I’ll post updates on that shoe as I put more miles on them.

That’s the question that I’m asking myself right now actually. I think I’m really between those two shoes for the Chicago marathon this year. The Saucony is wider, more stable and very comfortable. The Puma is lighter, bouncier and more propulsive. I feel like in a shorter race, advantage Puma all the way. For a marathon, I’m not sure yet. I think when I’m done with this training block and if I feel great and really want to give it my all for the race, I’ll pick the Puma. If I don’t think that I have it on race day and just want to get through it in comfort and put in a solid effort, I’ll reach for the Saucony. I’m definitely going to do some marathon paced long runs in both shoes soon to feel how they treat me over a longer effort. I’ll definitely post an update on my channel once I do so.
