To the question at 38:35, you can always try to contact DMAS if both DSS and Cover Virginia aren't providing timely answers about renewal status. Go the following website and then click on Member Request link: www.dmas.virginia.gov/about-us/contact/contact-us/ . The same Member Request option is great for asking the question at 41:00 about change in Medicaid coverage or MSP status that has resulted in the individual receiving copays. To this, I will say that plenty of folks' Medicaid coverage did not change during the pandemic due to the PHE period/declaration. This luckily prevented people from losing their coverage during the PHE period or from shifting from QMB to SLMB, for example, even if their income or resources increased to be higher than the QMB levels. One the PHE was over and Medicaid renewals began in 2023, some of these members experienced a change in status that they didn't expect, and with no explanation. Those QMB individuals might have been in SLMB status all of a sudden. DMAS could have done a better job at explaining this change and other changes to members (e.g. several members who were enrolled in an MCO plan under the Adult Expansion/MAGI group and were put on FFS Medicaid upon enrolling in Medicare; thus they no longer had an MCO plan yet received no letter explaining what Medicaid coverage they actually had). Regarding the slide at 24:55, I wanted to add that folks who are eligible for Medicare Savings Program (MSPs, aka partial Medicaid coverage ) are also automatically eligible for and enrolled in LIS. This is because the income and resource requirements are lower for QMB, SLMB, and QI groups than for LIS. As far as I know, this doesn't apply for QDWI individuals because their income limits are much higher than for LIS. On the flip side, LIS enrollees are not automatically eligible for MSPs. This is because the LIS income and resource requirements are higher than for MSPs. Fortunately, though, the LIS application through the SSA will be sent to the local DSS so that DSS can assess whether the individual might be eligible for MSPs. If they see the individual may qualify for an MSP based on the LIS application information, DSS should then to initiate the beginnings of an application for an MSP for the individual.

If there is a 6-month window to enroll in a supplement plan without a medical questionnaire, does that mean dual Medicare/Medicaid beneficiaries will be at a disadvantage if say they get kicked off the dual Medicaid program after a year or two?

Hung Cao, candidate for US Senate for VA now just implied Personal Care Assistants for high support needs disabled people are too lazy to work, that having the stimulus made us too lazy to go back to the work we love. I’m a PCA; like other PCAs, it’s a labor of love. Nobody goes into this work to get rich and NONE of us are LAZY. How dare you. He owes an apology to every PCA in the state. We love our clients and couldn’t wait to get back to working with them! Sheriff Chapman, whom Mr. Cao mentioned as sensitive to the needs of ID/DD people, he supported the veto of SB357 by Youngkin, leaving our people more vulnerable. Parents have tried to pass that legislation for 5 years now. VA Republicans vote against it every single year, and the GOP governor VETOED it. He should have done his homework before showing up. Ms. Vega, it’s your political party that causes the red tape and barriers to accessing care. The constant implication is that we’re trying to live on the dole, so Republicans make it as difficult as possible to access PCA care and waivers intentionally sabotaging the program to save money. Mr Cao, another Republican, in the party that voted down the line against the American recovery act, upset about the “red tape” his party places on Medicaid and SSI, and healthcare access intentionally. The former president whom he loudly supports, proposed cutting 1.8 trillion to Medicaid in 2018, and 800 billion in 2017. I’d also like to know which of these candidates support repealing the Affordable Care Act. Repealing that would sentence many of us to death. Vega completely avoids answering the question about sub-minimum wage. What is Josh paid for his job Ms. Vega? Your local Giant is lucky to have Josh. Commend Josh instead. Mr. Cao, if your party had both chambers of Congress, it would be WORSE for ID/DD people. Your party voted straight down party lines against restraint abuse and seclusion torture bans in schools, but you’re saying a party that doesn’t support raising minimum wage overall is going to end sub-minimum wage and raise minimum wage for disabled people too? Its preposterous. It’s obvious you didn’t know about most of these issues until asked here, and your claims about how wonderful your party has or would be on these issues shows you don’t care enough about any of them to know which party has voted for what. It’s offensive. Mr. Cao, you showed up to a disability forum never having heard of “nothing about us without us?” Stop talking about COVID. A lot of the shutdown was to keep disabled people ALIVE. Nothing about us without us means no policies for us should ever be enacted without ID and DD self-advocates. Wexton and Spanberger brought receipts and clearly knew these issues in detail. I don’t think their opponents even read the Arc site and did any studying before showing up, and frankly, I doubt either did any studying after either. Mr. Cao doesn’t get that not only did disabled people suffer most with closures, we also suffered the most DEATHS during COVID, and MANY more of us would have died needlessly had we not shut down. Hung Cao is a member of C4TJ, which is a well known ableist group. He showed here he had no basic understanding of our issues, nor the issues and history of disability rights. Thank God he lost this House seat, and I will pray mightily for him to lose the US senate race too because I’m sorry, his ignorance would endanger neurodivergents, and his party getting back into power would repeal the ACA and cut Medicaid, and SSI as they’ve tried to do whenever in power for years.

Definitely consider reaching out to a free Work Incentives Coordinator in your area. If you search for that job title and the state where you live, you should see them come up. They can help you figure out how much you can work and keep your SSDI and ensure benefits are protected. Good luck!

My daughter has Down syndrome and had leukemia when she was 3-1/2 and 7. She was bald for years. When we went to our little neighborhood park, the parents would stare at her. No one ever talked to us or asked questions, which I would have welcomed. I kept myself calm because I assumed they felt sorry for her because she obviously had cancer, and they weren’t being rude. One day, with all of the parents staring, a little girl said, “Some people have hair, and some people don’t.” That was such a perfect response, which I will never forget.

I am a Gray Area Retirement soldier on a medical disability retirement. My premiums for SBP wears based on 75% times basic pay salary although my monthly retirement at age 60 is based off my points which is about a third of 75% basic pay salary. I am 100% total disability service connected. Is this right for them to collect high premiums although my retirement check is much lower

Any advocacy suggestions for high functioning adults with: ADHD, cPTSD, executive function issues, chronic health issues but unsupportive family members ? On one level, I would like to find help to cope with dismissive attitudes, and improve our relationships in general, but more acutely: help to advocate for me regarding financial independence, and securing control of future inheritance.

some cops are going to start traveling with ''sensory, or comfort kits'' for folks when they get pulled over..?! im sorry but people who need things like '' comfort items or sensory toys during a traffic stop, should not be driving ! also, in my experience, ( i worked in adult DD/MR services for 20 years ) most people who have those toys, dont actually need them, as for the people who actually need those toys , are very severely disabled and impaired; they cannot ask for therm, nor can they drive, or make vids and post their '' sensory issues on social media .
