Galloway needs to remain largely bypassed by the tourists headed north. A beautiful unspoilt region of Scotland which the hordes usually miss out on, thank goodness.

Well that was something! I have a genealogical interest so I'm always checking in on Galloway but haven't seen anything that shows me the beauty like this. Well done thank you.

That was beautiful! I have loved Galloway since my childhood, family holidays at the Portpatrick Hotel, and then later adventures to visit the ancient monuments and stone circles. Your photography was/is beautiful and gave such a delightful vibrancy and atmosphere. Looking forward to a return visit soon.

Thanks for such great pictures. Went there 30 years ago. Can only remember the puffins, being attacked by giant skuas and Mike Harding, the comedian, in the bar. The experience. of a lifetime, if somewhat surreal.

I wish people would stop posting about Dumfries and Galloway. It's a secret, let the great unwashed carry on up to the highlands, nothing to see here, leave it to us in the know to enjoy the fantastic scenery.. Seriously though, Great photos. Just don't tell the rest of the world. ;)

I understand! My ancestors were from Galloway and ended up in West Virginia, where, despite attempts to grow the population it so far is rural and not growing much. Makes for scenic landscapes and friendly people.

Not many people are aware of the fact that during the summers of 1957 and 1958 a detachment of approx 300 RAF personnel from the Airfield Construction Branch 5004 Squadron (mostly RAF National Servicemen) worked from April to September each year building the road to the top of the mountain and all the Military buildings and infrastructure. They lived in tents under arduous conditions (at times most of the tents and their contents were completely blown away) and in serious inclement weather the Servicemen took shelter in solme of the old stone cleats). They worked for 6 days each week and It is recorded that these conditions led to 2 mutinies taking place. A quarry was opened and material for the roads and other buildings blasted. When the quarry blasting took place up to a million birds took to the air ! Their link to the mainland was by 2 x 800 ton flat bottomed front opening Royal Navy tank landing craft vessels, manned by ROAC Army crews, who made the hazardous trips from the military port at Cairnryian as and when weather permitted. For any further info and photographs feel free to contact Mr Honey. pgh122@hotmail.com.

I'm American but have Scottish roots, so someone please tell me how I can find out the true history of this place. There is talk on here of a tragedy. What tragedy and when?

What an amazing piece of filming, with beautiful scenery. I recently watched an old black & white historic documentary on St Kilda, filmed in 1928, and about the people who moved there to live. and the hardship they tolerated. That was also an excellent piece of filming and I can recommend checking it out here on U Tube....
