Thank you for the amazing video, I picked something from your list for my November TBR! Water Shall Refuse Them and Lapvona. As for the outstanding book I would say Concerning My Daughter by Kim Hye-Jin and The Hole by Hiroko Oyamada... I am a bit into Japanese and Korean Literature. -
My literature professor referred to ‘Chlorine’ as a run-of-the-mill novel, in an argument as to why a student shouldn’t use the book for their literary essay lol.
Hi. Nice reviews. I've just finished The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum and it finished me. Based on a true story, beautifully written but so unsettling. I think I'll avoid Cows lol.....
Yeah that was one of the first more extreme books I read years ago. I was so disturbed by it, I had to make a video on it t exorcise my thoughts on it 😂 Off Season by him is also meant to be very good
@@RGsDevilship Yep...I'm not alone lol...Off Season is a masterpiece. I read the unexpurgated version which gives Ketchums original ending but was unfortunately censored by the mainstream publishers...it's more gory and comparatively less unbearable than The Girl Next Door but still lingers in my memory. ...
I think you recently bought We Used to Live Here, please read this book as soon as possible!! It felt like a horror movie and was so fast paced and unique!! I feel like you would love it too! I gave it 5 ⭐️’s!
Very nice reviews as always! I totally understand reading slumps, I'm in a similar situation currently. Not really a slump, but a long, slow read. I'm a fan of biographies & I'm reading Grant by Ron Chernow, which is around 1,000 pages. It's excellent, but there's so much detail that I'm reading slow to soak it in better, it's like time traveling for me. I highly recommend it if you like that type of book. I am looking forward to eventually reading Lapvona, Cackle & Water Shall Refuse Them.
I feel like with long books, whether fiction or non-fiction, you just need to take some extra time with them to soak up all the details. It usually takes me 3-4 weeks to read a 1000 page book, I could bash it out in a week but where's the fun in that?! 😊
I never feel bored listening to your book reviews. Thanks for being honest even when you didn't enjoy a book. btw have you ever read The Cipher by Kathe Koja? I'm currently reading it and it feels like something that'd be right up your alley.
Well that's good, because I can never gauge if my own videos are interesting or not, as by the time I've edited a video down three of four times I'm just so sick of hear myself talk 😂 I haven't read that yet but I've been meaning to for years, it sounds so weird, in a good way!!
Another great video on this topic. I totally agree that pre-ordering while on a ban is a bit like cheating. I've seen people do these "bans" and they make exceptions, which, in my opinion, defeats the purpose. I wish more people in the book community talked about this.
I agree, I get that maybe one or two books that you're genuinely excited about and need to read asap. But it does come off as pointless if you have loads of preorders and then book subscription boxes as well. I've also recently seen content creators going on book buying bans but then encouraging their audience to buy them books off their wishlist, which is a whole other matter of problematic behavior and taking advantage of your audience.
Blackwood’s got some really spooky stuff. May I suggest Arthur Machen’s The White People (it is a short horror story but I found it delectable). Also. If you have not been exposed to it already, I highly recommend Lilith by George MacDonald. It gives me a devilish little thrill. Currently, I am trying to find something that hits me in the way that Dead Eleven did. So hard to find those creepy slow burns. Maybe something in analogue horror? Let me know if you have any suggestions. Halloween is just around the bend. 👻
I love Arthur Machen, the Great God Pan and the White People are two of my favourite stories from him. The first books that came to mind recommendation wise is Songs of a Dead Dreamer & Grimscribe by Thomas Ligotti or Haunted Castles by Ray Russell. If you haven't read them yet, that is 😅
I recently listened to the audiobook of "The House of Last Resorts". As an Italian myself, I found it engaging how the author portrayed the southern Italian life of Sicily, with some passages even written in Italian. The story itself was highly predictable, but overall, it was a nice read. Of course, this is just my personal taste.
That's understandable, I find that certain horror novels can lean into the cliche themes or tropes but just because they do so, it doesn't take away from ones overall enjoyment of it.
Found your channel. I'm glad I did. I've added a few books to my TBR that I didn't know about. Especially OF THE FLESH, which isn't yet listed for sale here in the US. Gonna check Waterstones and see if it's there. It has such a beautiful cover, btw. Someone elae who agreed with me regarding MAEVE FLY! I so WANTED to love that book! It was on my most anticipated 5-star read. Oh how I was so disappointed after reading. Then I would see other reviews raving about the book. I would be lying I said just fir a second, I doubted myself .... then I got myself together .... 😅 Looking forward to more videos!! Take care!
Welcome, glad you stumbled upon my little corner of the internet! No you weren't wrong in your opinion!! Not to be shady, but I feel like those who rated Maeve Fly highly solely did so just because it had an "unhinged female character" and that's trendy within the community at the moment. She wasn't a well written character in my opinion, the story itself was slow and cliche and the ending was just a bit cringy.
loved this video! I'm most excited about The Black Hunger, I have the ARC from netgalley, but I like reading epistolary novels in physical form so I preordered a copy from Blackwells
Thanks for putting this together. Many of your suggestions sound really interesting, so I put them on my Goodreads list. Withered Hill especially sounds good, I'm a big fan of folk horror. And The Bog Wife sounds great as I live close to the Appalachia area in the Smoky Mountains.
Ah no worries, I've wanted to make a video like this for a while so I'm glad it's actually informative. Also, I'm working on a folk horror video at the moment so keep an eye out for it in the coming weeks!!
super excited for a sunny place and of the flesh!! mariana enríquez fans are well-fed this year. she also has a story included in the latin american horror collection Through the Night Like a Snake published earlier this year :)
I bought them online, if you search "HORI Split Pad Pro (Pikachu & Eevee) for Nintendo Switch" they should come up. I really recommend any of the Hori controllers, they are much more comfortable than the standard joycons.
So many awesome books on this list! I didn't realize you went for music!? I also studied music so it always gets me excited when I realize others that have had that experience.
I'm reading A Canticle for Leibowitz while taking a break halfway thru Akira. I just read Nuclear War: A Scenario by Annie Jacobsen (scariest non-fiction book I've ever read by the way) which was what inspired me to finally read Canticle. I've been reading a lot of stuff on audio, or a blend of audio and text, recently.
Great video as always! I've put The Ruins on my "to Read List", ..... along with others. Did they make a movie of The Ruins? --- Poor Things is now one of my favorite movies, so strange & unique with incredible performances. ---- I wanted to discuss Longlegs for sure,...I have NOT seen this yet,.but I REALLY want to! I'm a huge fan of the Director, "Oz" Perkins, who is the son of iconic Anthony Perkins. Check out the movie of his, "I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House", which is a very slow burn movie, but so unique, it's told from the perspective of the ghost who haunts the house. It's now one of my favorite horror movies. He also did "The Blackcoat's Daughter" which was very good too. Love your content, keep it up!
Longlegs freaked me out so much! While I don't think it was the greatest film and it had its issues, it made me so stressed and had my heart racing in so many scenes. The intro made me want to just leave the cinema haha. I'm also the same with Stardew Valley - it just hooks me so much that I can't do anything else, so I've also been taking a break! I have it on Switch and Steam :)
Talking about video games, I have a blast this summer playing most of the resident evil & devil may cry games, quite frankly they put me in a reading slump (not complaining though because I had a good time) so I haven't been able to read much recently. I've the same thought about PTSD radio, the beginning was so strong but by the last volume it got a bit repetitive and I lost my interest in it. Idk if you have read anything by Sachiko uguisu, her art style can seem childlike but her stories are very fascinating, she is my favorite horror mangaka besides junji ito.
Recently - I read a sample of The Ruins on Google, & I was really able to absorb the writer's style. It has an old school narrative drive, like a brought-up-to-date version of of Sheridan Le Fanu. Scott Smith has a very visual style, & it's definitely a book that I'll get to before too long. That sample service that Google offers readers is very helpful. I'm currently half way through Octavia E. Butler's loosely connected, bleak-but-compelling Patternmaster series, -: Pattermaster, Mind of my Mind, Wild Seed, Clay's Ark. They're billed as SF, but they're dark enough to be read by horror fans IMO. I've finished Clay's Ark, & Mind of my Mind, which were good.
Sorry to hear that you're not enjoying it! I always have to wait a good while before reading a book after watching the film adaptation so that I don't get them jumbled in my head 😂
I love watching your videos 😎 You should go and see Alien Romulus before it leaves cinemas, highly recommend. Also watch In A Violent nature on Shudder (Shudder is well worth the money)
What took me out of Yellowjackets is a common sin amongst these modern movies/shows set in previous decades is that these teenagers from the 90s sound and act NOTHING like teenagers from the 90s
The Ruins is great!! BTW if you haven't already read it "Legion" by William Peter Blatty is getting a re-release early next year... it is a brilliant book and might be even better than The Exorcist imo.
