Thank you for this video. After waffling for about 8 months I finally pulled the trigger on an FX Aid XL. I wanted to ask you, what is the oscillator creating these sounds in this video?
Thanks Julia! Yeah I think this one was a big step up for me. The patch was really meditative and pretty, the drone footage was more compelling than a static shot, and the location is really lovely. Glad you liked it! I actually used a similar patch on this song too: open.spotify.com/track/15u57cYRUZBgGrw7Udq1cc?si=UJ-vVatCRmGhqicstWWjQg&context=spotify%3Aalbum%3A00UzECGIxYM8HLLpesNoVu
this is a great video, Scott. good sounds. one of the ideas i've been thinking about lately came from watching some rob hordijk talks on youtube and realizing that i was carrying an understanding of "feedback" from my pre-modular synth days, i.e. that feedback was something that happened strictly in the audio path, like microphones picking up PA output or guitar strings resonating sympathetically with amplifiers. what i got from rob was thinking about expanding feedback into the space of "an output of something at some point feeding back into one of that thing's inputs" - that it can occur in the CV domain as well. like a benjolin/rungler using the output of the shift register to FM the oscillator that is being fed into the same shift register. if i'm not mistaken, you're sticking with the audio domain here, and it sounds great, but i think expanding the concept of feedback outside the audio path might introduce other possibilities. i don't mean to presume you're operating under the same limited idea of feedback that i was hung up on ... but it's probably reasonable to assume that *some* other viewers are and i thought i'd throw this out there because it was kind of a forehead-slapping moment for me.
Thanks so much for the thoughtful comment! Definitely lots to learn from Rob Hordijk. It's funny and a little ironic that you mention CV feedback on this video, because the matrix mixer clued me in to that universe. I do often forget about it and lean more towards doing audio feedback, but that's a good reminder to explore that potential more.
This is pretty cool, sadly I haven’t gotten into electronic music production at all so I have not the slightest idea on how it works, but it sounds sick! Keep it up honestly
Thanks Vivian, glad you enjoyed it! If you're interested in trying out electronic music production there's a lot of great free/cheap software and tons of youtube tutorials. That can be a useful way to test the waters before diving in with expensive hardware. I usually steer people towards VCV rack rather than going straight into a eurorack modular synth like what I used in this video.
I almost never patch mine- while it’s a great-sounding module and clearly capable of much melodic output, I’ve never got to grips with the modes. Yet I’ve never sold it, as I have modules I used much more… Perhaps one day I’ll understand it!
Yeah it's been a while since I made this one so I'm not 100% sure what I did. I do have both an Audio IO 1U and a Stereo Line Out 1U, so I may have recorded the Happy Nerding FX Aid on one output pair and the Big Sky on a separate output pair. At least that's how I'd do it now. Although I've since sold the Big Sky as it wasn't getting enough use. If I do want to run signal from my computer to the rack, I'll send an output from my interface to the Audio IO 1U. Hope that helps!
@@ScottMFR oh ok. Hmm i bought a external fx module called knob farm ferry but ive been underwhelmed by it. Seems like the fx get filtered out quite a bit and its harder to hear the fx for some reason. Would like to find a way that you can really hear your fx pedals on through your modular.
I packed my fxaid with only reverbs but somehow the 2 big sky reverbs effects are the only 2 that dont work. Strange. Could it be that those programs are too big and i need to clear some spots? Ill just make a programme with just the big sky effects and try, before complaining online :)
Good question! To be honest I'm not sure, as I've never encountered that. Probably best to try reinstalling the firmware as maybe something interrupted the transfer. If that fails I'd recommend reaching out to FX Aid to see what they say. I'd be curious to hear if you're able to resolve the issue!
Thanks! I had to reread my video description to remind myself what I did. Splitting the chords through a filter into separate high band and low outputs allows for different rhythmic processing. Is fun!
Thanks! Yeah this one was fun. The guy's "speech" at the beginning provided such a great serindipidous intro. I meant to do more jams in this style but I've still mostly been doing the nature based ones. I'll have to revisit this concept soon!
I played with one of these today but I was confused that it didn't have a trigger or gate input..? I am trying to understand you send CV pitch to 1v/per Octave then it just says open sustain the whole time..? why would you want that..?
That's actually pretty common with analog oscillators. The idea is that you would use a VCA and an envelope to control the volume. Self contained full voices are definitely more space efficient, but they don't give you the same flexibility of control.
@@ScottMFR ..right it's very common on analog oscillators but this is digital correct..? ..I have a bunch of both.. I guess I am spoiled with my mutable instruments clones like plaits and elements.. the only digital oscillator I have that stays open is my Dual Atari Punk Console.. but that is more of a experimental sound generator..
Glad you enjoyed the video! All of the channels have the same CV assignment options. If I remember correctly, In this case I'm just assigning (RISE) PITCH to CV input 1 because that's the VCO channel. If you wanted, you could make all 4 channels VCOs, send a pitch input to any CV input, and assign it to all 4 channels RISE.
Thanks Lian! To be honest, it was mostly a lazy method of framing the shot, but I also like the concept of cable POV and being within the speghetti jungle!
Make sure to cover or un-rack this module if have a gathering at your place! A friend of a friend got instagibbed when checking out “the colourful noodle plant”.
little late, but I wasn't sure this was the matrix mixer I was going to buy, limited hp at the end of building my rack. thanks for this video a helped me with my decision. I also grabbed a sequential switch and I can see of ways to use them together .
Thanks Travis! Glad you enjoyed it. I powered my system with an Aimtom Powerpal-500, which it looks like has been replaced now with the Powerpal Rebel 440: aimtom.com/product/rebel440/?currency=CAD I actually wrote an article about portable power for synths when I was writing for Ask.Audio. The technology has advanced quite a bit since then, but you still might find the info useful. You can check it out here: ask.audio/articles/on-the-road-portable-power-options-for-synthesizers-electronic-instruments
