Just sounds like you became a teacher when you couldn’t get a job in the video field you wanted to originally be in. Hope you found a job now in what you actually wanted to do. Jobs, especially in education, rarely work out if you don’t actually feel driven/called to do it. There’s just too much to do, not enough pay, and too much to put up with to do it if you don’t actually love it.

It’s just totally ridiculous. No matter how much prep you do the fact remains that you can only teach one class at a time. The kids who are not equipped to deal with the class that they are in will fail, even if they are socially promoted to spare their feelings. The axe will finally fall when they go to some open admissions state university and flunk out freshman year. Nobody should bother with teaching anymore.

This inner city high school I taught at in Cleveland [ South High School] which was shut down in a downsizing move since they lost half of their enrollment in that district between the ‘eighties and the two thousand ‘oughts, was so chaotic that a mobile police headquarters unit setup inside of a giant bus had to be permanently parked there just to handle all of the thugs beings kicked out of the building on a constant basis. This was prompted by hordes of class cutters having to be hunted down in the hallways by the principal and the security guards who would handcuff everybody to the stairwell railings to be collected on the way back to the office to be suspended from school. Finally this led to replacing the security guards with regular police officers culminating in the mobile command center being parked there for an extended period. In other words, the school evolved into a reform school in all but name. When I worked there during the period leading up to this, or the mid ‘eighties, I used to get paid OT to ride around in a paddy wagon with the cops identifying the truants from our building wandering the neighborhood to be stuffed into the cage in the rear of the paddy wagon to be forcibly returned to school. One day when we got back these frantic mothers were questioning me as to whether or not there’d been a riot in the building. I was standing next to one of the assistant principals so I said “no, anyway I’ve been gone working the passenger seat up front in the police paddy-wagon so I don’t really know”.

That misconception, that teaching from a government and corporate view is a job of "Passion" that THEY view is laxed and easy going and should not be compensated highly. Yet, Teachers are the most overworked, tired, fatigued, underpaid, stressed out job around. Engineering jobs in an office building crammed in front of a computer all day get's $70 hr. in most large cities. Teachers average $38,000 yr. Sad. They have to be married, living with roommate to afford a condo, let alone anything else. Teachers in LA living out of their cars... Need to change this corporate mindset.

Much good luck with your future decisions regarding your work. At best, I found teaching to be a ten to twelve hour day. From the outset, always working in a Title I school, I found my kids needed extra exposure and guidance for most of what I was teaching. Their foundation was often weak, and they were often not confident learners. Early on, I decided to have an after school program, invite those kids who needed the extra coaching, provide snacks, and complete their homework with them, practice on material I had taught that day. The time spent was invaluable. Questions could be answered with no stress and the extra practice with sorting out their confusions, gave them the confidence to understand the work. Then, I decided to handle testing differently. No one was allowed to fail a test. If they did, I sat down with that child, 1:1, or sometimes two or three together, retaught the difficulties, and we retested, on the same test. People said, oh, if they know they can take the test again, they won’t work to pass the first time. Why would they? Well, I found exactly the opposite. They didn’t want to retest. They wanted to pass the first time, and then, with extra help, they found they could, and that made them want to do the best they could, and they learned that their best was really, really good. It was a totally win win situation. Everybody made some honor roll, the A, the A/B or the B, mostly for the first time in their lives. They learned they were smart, could master what they were being taught, and their confidence began to be based on real achievement. I taught like this for twenty plus years, with mostly happy, successful kids. It was a pleasure for me and them. Of course, there were problems, but when you have established a culture of expectation for success, with the teaching support needed to get there, both parents and kids begin to trust you, and work harder than ever. I did go into teaching when my kids were grown, and I had the time and support to devote to it. I was shocked at how much money I spent on materials I felt were vital for my kids’ success. And, this included buying food and drinks every week. But, I also wouldn’t change a thing.

I wanna be a math teacher, even though teaching is under funded and public schools these days are horrible but it is a calling even though i know I won't make a lot, it is a calling and it is needed, but I think I might consider private tutoring.

Run people, get out of NC. You stay, your kids will be dumb. The kids that grow up in PA and go to college in PA will be YOUR grown kids Boss. If you are a teacher, go to Seattle WA where they pay for your CEU credits. I am making a measly 52,000 a year AFTER I worked for TWENTY YEARS in NC. Seattle pays $79,000 for the my CEU credits for those many years. NC took away Masters pay, EOG pay, Longevity pay, step pay. You do not get that 2 1/2% pay raise every year NC used to give. Starting in 2014, they stopped that. Every FIVE years you work, then you get that two and a half percent pay raise. And there is no teacher union like in PA. Get out NOW. Get away from NC, for YOUR sake, for your CHILDREN'S sake.

Teaching is a job, yes. Teaching is a profession, yes. Yet, teaching is more. It is a life that should be chosen carefully. To choose it, and to stay with it, requires an acceptance that it will be at the heart of everything you do. I have nothing but respect and admiration for those who teach, whether it is for only a short time or for a decades-long career.

I resigned after 3 years(last day for me is June 30th-SS). Breaks my heart bc I love teaching. I just dont like that I have no energy or motivation to complete daily home tasks or mental health/physical health tasks. I've gained about 30 lbs due to my emotions during pandemic teaching. It's all so much and by summer I have no energy and not much money to even enjoy it. Then it all starts over again. I'm heartbroken, but I need time or money from my career and with teaching I have neither. 35k isn't cutting it for the amount of energy, money, and side jobs ("counselor", mediator, "nurse" PE teacher, general ed teacher, data analyst, etc.). that we're required to do to have a decently managed classroom.

WOW. I used to be a substitute teaching assistant. I noticed all of the extra paperwork that the teacher had to do. So glad I didn't go for the Masters in teaching. I teach online for ESL company . The students determine what they want to learn. They can get assessments or certifications if they need them. I am not required to invent lesson plans . We are given paid online trainings to help us with new techniques etc. for both group and individual students. We do write feedback. Class size is nine to twelve. I generally choose my own hours. However, it has gotten a little competitive lately. Like gig economy , there are few benefits except I can live almost anywhere there is Internet. Also the salary is not exactly competitive.

The reason you’re not “just a teacher” is because the profession is directed by people who are very idealistic and have openness personality traits. They can’t set boundaries, so they work themselves into the ground and burn out. Those who don’t have openness personality profiles get into administration and then dump the pointless paperwork on you while they climb career ladders into cushy government jobs.

I gotta disagree with you on the pay. Yes, doing what you love is payment in itself, but it doesn't mean teachers shouldn't ask for what they are worth. That's how they get away with paying us shit. There's this mantra of "we don't do it for the money, we do it because we care about the kids." It can and should be both. At the end of the day, it's a job, and people deserve to get paid well for a job they spent years studying and training for, and going into college debt for.

Yeah I majored in education and that is what my undergrad degree is in. I liked it at first but now I'm considering not doing anything with it. Honestly I am working full time in a library as a clerk and I really like it. It has draw backs like any other job like the pay I only get paid 12.50 an hour but I get good benefits my co workers are nice it's a laid back work enviroment my boss and hr are nice and so are the co workers and most of the customers. But it's still I good thing I have the degree because with my undergrad degree I can move up to a library assistant and make more money so it is still good I have the degree. People in my family are like get a better job but my mom is super supportive and I don't want to leave this company and regret it.

#3 seems to be a problem a LOT of teachers have. Most teachers are people who loved to sit still in a chair and listen to their teachers, and we’re able to get good grades that way. Then they go into a classroom and get frustrated that most kids don’t learn well that way and blame the parents.

After I graduated I really wanted to pursue film but my lack of motivation and lack of creativity don’t encourage me so I have to choose a major in college and I’d choose teaching teaching to have it as a physically net certified plan and yes I know I would love teaching but it’s not my call like filming is I love video editing but if I base my life around that what are the chances that I actually make something of it so actually choosing a teacher major is concrete and would force me to do it. Im not sure but I need a bit of help choosing majors and this helped me. I would love to teach but then my entire life would be so off teaching and being in school forever sounds like misery and away even though I wouldn’t mind that lifestyle I know it’s rewarding but I would prefer living and breathing editing it’s just more flexible and easier to lose track of it. It’s all on me though I know I got this I know I can do anything my mind goes into I just want a good plan and I’m not sure what to do
