Sucks. I am a sub teacher now in NYC. I graduated college in 2015 with a Bachelors and not able to pay it back. That is why I havent went back for my masters. I looked into education, counseling, social work etc for masters. The amount school cost for them to pay like 40k for example to social workers. Yet, a two year degree in let's say computers will earn you that or more .

You renewed your certificate, don't you want to go back full time. I was like no. I don't think I can be the best teacher, the best mom and run the house at the same time.

Got that right... I´ve been working as a teacher for several years now. And I gotta say that if your planning on rising a family when your main economical income is by teaching. You´re gonna have a taugh time. Here in Mexico teachers are paid 100 pesos top per hour. And still most schools don´t provide social insurance. Vacations are not paid, and on top of that thery ask you to do some administrative work after your shift. Imagine not having time for your family or R & R. and no money... Sounds pitiful but it is a reality...

In my first and only year of teaching, someone attempted to bribe me, I was intimidated by administration, groped by a drunk mom, harassed over the phone and email, falsely accused of sexual harassment, and students and even other teachers spread rumors defaming my character. This was only in a span of 9 months because school was shut down in March. I came in to work every day scared of what would happen next. It started affecting my physical and mental health. I had back pain and was falling asleep while at my desk. I came to work angry and left angrier. I have experience substitute teaching in impoverished inner city schools, and the academic and behavioral problems I witnessed simply made sense. Of course they were scared, frustrated, and hopeless -- their lives were spiritually and materially empty because of poverty, abuse, neglect, etc. But this full-time position was in a wealthy community with a reputation and pride in their schools. These were people that had everything laid out for a privileged, fulfilling life, yet they acted nastier than those with real problems. It took a long time to sort out how I could love and trust people again after knowing what people are capable of. I resigned, moved, and started my own business. I am much happier now and my health has improved.

Wait until you get a job in higher education. It’s the same kids that completed elementary school with well-below grade-level reading, math, and writing skills. The same kids that don’t remember dead lines and don’t follow rubrics. The same kids that did a huge amount of group work that fosters group-think. The same kids that value social time over their futures; which you’d think is why they’re furthering their education. Good luck.
I work at a community college and it's been forced to have a remedial program...of course, without the word remedial, it's just a bunch of classes for remedial students.
There is a university in my city that gives group exams and finals that are open book or internet notes. The graduates are really dumb. I had a teacher tell me that Australia was part of America. Another told me that Australia was not a country and not an island. They still argued with me when I told them that my sister lived in Australia for ten years, and I had visited her several times.
As a teacher and engineer, I believed colleges/universities as the gatekeeper. Not any more. Many colleges accept students that are not ready for college-level work, then they require them to take non-credit remedial courses that they charge the students for these required pre-qualifying programs.. These remedial programs are most often out-of pocket costs for the student. What a scam.
Taught undergrad classes a few years. Some great students. Many had no critical thinking skills, no knowledge of grammar, and no interest in learning. They just needed the degree, the ticket where they could get a job.
You easily explain the complex ever evolving problems a teacher deals on a daily basis . As a teacher for 20 years I thank you for explaining these tasks to people outside the profession and wish you well in your new endeavor .

Good to see your comments on this. As a long time PE teacher (who started as a PE aid to the teacher) went back to school after 40 to get my credential, and then proceeded to get a multiple subject credential, a PE and a social studies credential (too). Nothing I had planned on for life, but rather out of my passion to pass on whatever gifts I could. And, yep, you have to APPRECIATE kids, but you sure don’t do it for financial gain...nor did I expect to. I just pray I’m doing good and passing on a joyful, knowledgable outlook on life.
You are a teacher, a counselor, a nurse, and a parent for those whose parents don't care. You are a referee and a negotiator. You are a person of all trades and a master of what you teach. Then you also deal with other teachers and the pressures from Admin. It's a lot! If you team teach...I won't go there. 😑
I’m a social worker; which can be a stressful field honestly. I now work at a school and like it. But before I had 70 clients and had to drive to all their homes. It’s a tough field too. But you can find a good fit, do an internship first !!

I keep coming back to whether or not I should teach. I don't want to regret not doing it. But also I'm not passionate about it. Kids just love me and I love them. But I'm not a disciplinarian. I helped with Sunday school and have been told more than once I should work with kids but 🤷🏾 It seems stable I guess. More solid than my current major which is landscape architecture. I wish I could hurry up and choose. But so many blogs say teaching isn't worth it. And I always say if I have children I'm home schooling them lol

Kenya I feel the exact same way! I do love kids and hanging out with younger people. But I don't have good discipline either. My major was psychology and I too wish I could just hurry up and choose what I want to do. Great video, Isaiah! You are so right in everything that you outlined here. There is always something "new" that teachers have to master overnight by or before the beginning of every new school year. And this "new" thing doesn't cancel out an "old" thing (unless it's an upgrade in technology). It is simply an added layer to what teachers already have to have securely under our belts. There are so many unwritten rules that teachers have to follow, which are "sprung on us" out of the blue. What admin. consider "protocol" in reality is just passive aggression and abusive authority on their parts. Teachers are human; we are not perfect. We are just expected to be flawless, open to everything and everybody every second of the day and night, and say 'yes' 24/7. Crazy is an understatement here.
Totally reminds me of my experience with a fellowship 5 years ago. I wish they were more honest with people that aren't "born to do it" and have been preparing for years. Unfortunately the desperation to fill spots has created this industry of organizations that try to crank out teachers over a summer and it's a total disaster. I'm still shocked I made it through the year even though they kept moving me because I couldn't control a class consisted and I never slept because of the course load.
Many teachers want to show a😊to cover stress, desappointment and shame. The rules in school are old and unfair. The Unions charge high monthly payments to protect them and do nothing. Get together and fight for your own rights. If is necessary to look for something else to do while we fight for our right, let's do it!! It is better than live suffering and accepting an oppressive system

I know the feeling. I got my Masters in Teaching while student teaching full time. When I was finally certified to teach I burned out in 3 years and left a position where I was making more than I ever thought I would make. I essentially took a year off and rediscovered my love of teaching at a school where I was getting 15k less a year. Never did I think I would want to teach, but once it gets in you, its a hard thing to shake. Keep it up!
Which state do you teach in? I am a sub teacher in NYC. Been doing it for a year and a half. I been holding off getting my masters for years as I do enjoy teaching but its tiring. I can imagine creating the lesson plan, plus report cards, hw if no assistant. Teachers really dont get enough credit. On top of the kids behavior and parents who are not involved.
I have taught in Oregon and Idaho, but the high schools I taught at were in Houston, Texas. There are some advantages to subbing (a lot less responsibility), but I prefer the stability of a permanent position. As far as getting your Masters, depending on what district you are in it can be a big boost in pay or nothing at all.
@@donb1523 What did you mean by you left a job you was making than you thought? What grades did you teach? In NYC, you need a masters and certificate to be a permanent teacher. I applied to private schools as they do not ask for much in terms of certification. Though teachers who been doing it for years thinks I have been teaching for years. Subbing is experience and income for the time being.
Alima the districts I taught in in Texas started off at 50k a year, which was quite a bit considering I never made more than 20k. Oregon also requires a Masters to teach. Subbing is good experience. A lot of it depends on the district you are in and the administration you work for as far as good/bad experience. If you find a school with a strong support system between admin and teachers I would hold on to that position as long as possible.
@@donb1523 You worked doing teaching for 20k before? I seen TA positions that pays about 24k but it's an insult. It comes out to less than minimum wage hourly especially if one has experience. When I graduated college or right before I did a day training at a day care. Minimum wage in NY is now $15 an hour. A couple years ago it was $8. I did one day and didnt go back. I felt it wasnt worth the amount I was doing should of been way more. I been to over 15 schools and teachers feel comfortable telling me the cons of what's going on in terms of support. It's sad and that is a reason why educators are living the profession. So MANY schools are hiring here but yet they want one to have 5 years experience, masters and certification. Why some schools like charters opt for long term subs as the rate is way less since they cant find someone to fit their requirements.

My dad is a college level professor...there is no break lol. And the fact that u have to keep up with more than one class that you teach + your continued education for certifications. Well with my dad he teaches Finance and Accounting. He loves teaching, but the students are hungry for knowledge like they used to be. Not ALL, but most.

You are so right young man about the HOURS a teacher puts in... I entered high school Science teaching from a 33 year career as a Senior Research Scientist at a National Laboratory. I was used to long days and working weekends as a researcher, but after retiring I was starting over in a new Profession that I had ZERO EXPERIENCE with!! The first year I was TERRIFIED of being in front of students and many of the students quickly picked up on my insecurity vibes!! To make it worse I had no experience with developing Lesson Plans and had no idea where to begin I survived the first year and I began to figure it out!! By the end of my second year I actually had decent Lesson Plans and pretty soon I became a real teacher!! I was a hands on Senior Research Scientist and I wanted to translate this to hands on experiments with students. I am still figuring this out, and I have major issues with resources!!! My State has a teacher shortage. Did the State make conditions better to retain and attract teachers? Nope. Instead they lowered licensure requirements.
All states have a teacher shortage. Why is that? Insanely high requirements to become a teacher for very low pay (OR requires masters). Teacher retention is abysmal. Lowering standards will fix everything. What idiot administrators who became administrators because they could not survive on their teacher salary. I’ve been teaching for 15 years now. It must keep me young because my students guess me at about age 29. I’ll tell them they are far off! I had a long day today. Most of my day was spent emailing students and parents and guidance. including one student who plagiarized and thought they deserved better than zero on a paper that was 60% lifted. Now I have a conference set up with him for Thursday after school. The day went well. I lectured, had decent interactions with the kids but at the end of the day I was drained. You definitely wear many hats. The pay is decent in Florida as I’m making about 58,000 a year. But that includes much experience including my masters and getting a Cambridge bonus with honors classes. I enjoy the creativity of it and working with teenagers but teenagers can be a pro as well as a con!

No matter how much you enjoy your work, they will ALWAYS be days, even weeks where you don’t want to do it. That’s why it’s called work. There will always be days where you just don’t feel like it, but you have to do your work in order to fulfill your responsibilities. This “never work a day” nonsense is why people think that they have to be 100% happy in a job all the time. It’s not true.

I left working in finance industry to become an outdoor instructor over the summer months, and taught myself how to breakdance, which I now teach in many schools and other youth based settings during the spring and autumn months. Best thing i ever did was leave finance. Now freelance/self employed cannot be happier, working less hours with less stress. I'm as happy as a pig in shit.
I am teaching and running 9 years in this industry now, but am planning to quit in a year or two. Am getting drained. It took me a while to realize that my heart isn't in this career even if I could do great things with the set of skills I honed over the years.
Have you thought of teaching at a vocational high school? Your experience would qualify you for a certificate without going back to school. You would also get to teach audio visual courses to kiddos that want to do it in the future. You’d also have great little interns for your projects after they graduate.
Much good luck with your future decisions regarding your work. At best, I found teaching to be a ten to twelve hour day. From the outset, always working in a Title I school, I found my kids needed extra exposure and guidance for most of what I was teaching. Their foundation was often weak, and they were often not confident learners. Early on, I decided to have an after school program, invite those kids who needed the extra coaching, provide snacks, and complete their homework with them, practice on material I had taught that day. The time spent was invaluable. Questions could be answered with no stress and the extra practice with sorting out their confusions, gave them the confidence to understand the work. Then, I decided to handle testing differently. No one was allowed to fail a test. If they did, I sat down with that child, 1:1, or sometimes two or three together, retaught the difficulties, and we retested, on the same test. People said, oh, if they know they can take the test again, they won’t work to pass the first time. Why would they? Well, I found exactly the opposite. They didn’t want to retest. They wanted to pass the first time, and then, with extra help, they found they could, and that made them want to do the best they could, and they learned that their best was really, really good. It was a totally win win situation. Everybody made some honor roll, the A, the A/B or the B, mostly for the first time in their lives. They learned they were smart, could master what they were being taught, and their confidence began to be based on real achievement. I taught like this for twenty plus years, with mostly happy, successful kids. It was a pleasure for me and them. Of course, there were problems, but when you have established a culture of expectation for success, with the teaching support needed to get there, both parents and kids begin to trust you, and work harder than ever. I did go into teaching when my kids were grown, and I had the time and support to devote to it. I was shocked at how much money I spent on materials I felt were vital for my kids’ success. And, this included buying food and drinks every week. But, I also wouldn’t change a thing.

As a retired professor in the department of education, lateral teaching (diff univ call this different names) should be designed on 4000 level courses in education which helps a person learn the art of teaching. You stated that your mode of teaching students was to write info on chalkboard or have them listen and take notes. This is low info learning bc these tactics can be handouts. Students learn best when they are challenged and use critical skills. For instance, why did the race horse, Smarty Jones, lose the last leg of the Triple Crown? The reason has to involve research in different areas. Once students understand why, they understand the Triple Crown isn't a fair sport and most will never forget this knowledge.
Listen..people don't even understand the level of prep work that goes into teaching. And no one wants to just be "effective" so we put in even more time to add in all the creative stuff but still meet all the district demands. I laughed so hard at "just a teacher".

I was a sub and the a T.A. This is my first year teaching. It's very hard. You have to be a parent & disciplinary along with all the stuff he just mentioned.
Teaching is a job, yes. Teaching is a profession, yes. Yet, teaching is more. It is a life that should be chosen carefully. To choose it, and to stay with it, requires an acceptance that it will be at the heart of everything you do. I have nothing but respect and admiration for those who teach, whether it is for only a short time or for a decades-long career.
WOW. I used to be a substitute teaching assistant. I noticed all of the extra paperwork that the teacher had to do. So glad I didn't go for the Masters in teaching. I teach online for ESL company . The students determine what they want to learn. They can get assessments or certifications if they need them. I am not required to invent lesson plans . We are given paid online trainings to help us with new techniques etc. for both group and individual students. We do write feedback. Class size is nine to twelve. I generally choose my own hours. However, it has gotten a little competitive lately. Like gig economy , there are few benefits except I can live almost anywhere there is Internet. Also the salary is not exactly competitive.

Differential teaching programs....one of the main reasons I left teaching. Individual learning programs for every pupil. Then along came smart phones. I walked.
After I graduated I really wanted to pursue film but my lack of motivation and lack of creativity don’t encourage me so I have to choose a major in college and I’d choose teaching teaching to have it as a physically net certified plan and yes I know I would love teaching but it’s not my call like filming is I love video editing but if I base my life around that what are the chances that I actually make something of it so actually choosing a teacher major is concrete and would force me to do it. Im not sure but I need a bit of help choosing majors and this helped me. I would love to teach but then my entire life would be so off teaching and being in school forever sounds like misery and away even though I wouldn’t mind that lifestyle I know it’s rewarding but I would prefer living and breathing editing it’s just more flexible and easier to lose track of it. It’s all on me though I know I got this I know I can do anything my mind goes into I just want a good plan and I’m not sure what to do
I resigned after 3 years(last day for me is June 30th-SS). Breaks my heart bc I love teaching. I just dont like that I have no energy or motivation to complete daily home tasks or mental health/physical health tasks. I've gained about 30 lbs due to my emotions during pandemic teaching. It's all so much and by summer I have no energy and not much money to even enjoy it. Then it all starts over again. I'm heartbroken, but I need time or money from my career and with teaching I have neither. 35k isn't cutting it for the amount of energy, money, and side jobs ("counselor", mediator, "nurse" PE teacher, general ed teacher, data analyst, etc.). that we're required to do to have a decently managed classroom.
Everyone's telling me I should either be a science teacher or professor. And I'm like hell no. I dont have the patience for that. The pay is too crap for me to endure that much stress. I would rather be okay very well to be stressed.
Please, dont teach in UK or come to teach in UK either! Your life will be destroyed if you come! You will work 70-80 hours a week, no time to even take care of your basic needs. You will be marking books during the weekends and holidays. The money is so bad that you will struggle to pay your own rent and even basics like food, and possibly you will be living in a small seedy room...Also,an increasing number of British teenage students are extremely disengaged, nasty, violent...from spitting at you, throwing cans and all sort of objects, including chairs, to pushing you and worse, including constant shouting and swearing...you will be treated like rubbish and be blamed for it. Everything is always the teacher's fault! And no one does anything, they hide it under the carpet or use you as an scape goat. Teaching in UK is glorified babysitting where the kids basically rule like tyrannical dictators...Please, stay away! They are just calling you cause no one wants to teach in UK anymore! Its modern slavery! And we urgently need an Education reform!

I have been thinking about teaching just because it's a job and people say I'm good with kids. But I want to write and I'm not sure that's an actual money making venture. I need to do something asap.
@scott leachman thank you so much. That has been my thing this whole time wavering is I'm not a disciplinarian. I literally don't like telling people what to do lol. I just think of all the kids who need an advocate or some extra love. I've heard they are entitled and spoiled these days. So many things. My biggest concern is what you said. I am not good at laying down the law at all. Smh.
People say that I could make a good teacher but I don't want to go into it. Mainly because the United States has made it abundantly clear that it doesn't care about the education of its own kids. Oh sure they *say* that they care, but the minute it comes down to how to fund the local school district everyone runs away. They want the benefits without the cost.
#3 seems to be a problem a LOT of teachers have. Most teachers are people who loved to sit still in a chair and listen to their teachers, and we’re able to get good grades that way. Then they go into a classroom and get frustrated that most kids don’t learn well that way and blame the parents.
You should also be so very greatful to your parents that did all of what you described for you too. They were also on the job not form 7-4 but 24 7 with all the bills and didnt get paid!
I also know how you feel. I've been an adjunct community college instructor for a little over 11 years now working in two different college districts. I lecture 30 hours a week, but I also have about 10-15 hours a week in prep time that I'm not paid for. Like you, I have found the profession to be a 24/7 kind of career. I'm debating to leave my profession, too. I have a Masters in Education and a Masters in TESOL and I don't want to feel like I'm throwing all that hard work away by leaving teaching. However, many teachers do leave by their 7th year of teaching. Good luck to you, Isaiah.
Entered teaching just to make some extra cash and I thought the job would match my skills. Started off ok as a teacher aid …then had to get certified cause they wanted me to stay…just about wrapping up the certification but I don’t plan on staying …planning on shifting into accounting …
@@albertlee2462 It’s only worth it if you genuinely plan on becoming a college professor money wise. If you wanna dedicate your life and I do mean your life to kids…then cool. Otherwise not worth it.
Yeah I majored in education and that is what my undergrad degree is in. I liked it at first but now I'm considering not doing anything with it. Honestly I am working full time in a library as a clerk and I really like it. It has draw backs like any other job like the pay I only get paid 12.50 an hour but I get good benefits my co workers are nice it's a laid back work enviroment my boss and hr are nice and so are the co workers and most of the customers. But it's still I good thing I have the degree because with my undergrad degree I can move up to a library assistant and make more money so it is still good I have the degree. People in my family are like get a better job but my mom is super supportive and I don't want to leave this company and regret it.
