According to some YT publishers, virtually all the talent of Vienna at that time was Jewish. Well, at least, they are the only ones featured and mentioned.

Very interesting panel discussion. As I'm currently working on translating a novel, I can relate to what all three panelists are saying. Thank you for putting together a valuable symposium on the subject of translation.

"Global terrorism is no different from global trade, or global tourism. It too depends on the transnational flow of people, money, commodities, and information." I can't believe an intellectual is making such a remark. Her statement is flawed on the account that global terrorism targets and extinguishes random innocent human lives, while global trade and tourism are fundamentally concerned with the maximization of the quality of human life. NB: And how ungrateful people like her are to those who protect her right to an opinion with their lives. General observation: "Intellectuals" like this are frustratingly non-reflexive. The irony is that they will claim this very thing of those they criticize. A true academic knows better than to lean so wholeheartedly into a defense and a critique of any kind. While you're leaning, you're slipping. I.e., you must constantly be critical of your own inner opinion in order to keep it in check. Cameron fails catastrophically. She wants to reprimand linguists for their prescriptivism while at the same time flaunting her own value judgements. Look, anyone at all that moves into a state of consciousness and therefore a state of criticism about the world with a view to challenge or change it, begins to do the unnatural. You cannot then criticize your fellow conscious peers or systems of government control for doing what you claim is artificial.

A fantastic lecture. The humanity need people who have these clear views and that's what can fight fanaticism and terrorism. Congratulations Deborah Cameron. The same things happen all around the world with any dominating languages connected with power and domination.

Violets In a different tongue the educator renders your velvet zygomorphic, times actinomorphic times cleistogamous. He differentiates your perianth into five imbricated sepals. The lower most which is commonly spurred. And there are nectarifierous appendages that project backward into the spur of the petal […] that one yes…. the one that is lowermost. There. Oh spare me the They grow well if you grind the bones of dead words to dust and sprinkle the earth with their morbid power. This is not a metaphor. Culture comes from cutting back, rotting matter, from matted matter. Culture comes from raking over the living with the dead. Lay her in the earth, And from her fair and unpolluted flesh May violets spring. There, look, a clump, under the oak, against the fading winter of the grassy bank. Purpling into the darks of blue, paling as soft as apricot. Like Patience on a monument. Smiling at grief. gracias a ese poema y a gracias al señor spitzl, me siento como si no entiendo nada en inglés jajajajajaja (sé que ya no te sirve, espero que sin embargo pasaste su curso)

- Who says that that the initial state of LL2 is the blank slate ? - The goal is not to become "an other monolingual" but to develop all aspects of a foreign language (as much as possible including nonuniversal features) of monolinguals speaker and even multilingual speaker (with appropriate level of competencies and performance) . - Eva's case of illegitimate second language use is really is not valid. Who knows maybe it is all about Eva's integration hang-ups..

English/ELF/Globish is not connected to any country anymore but the "native language" of the urbanized global culture (the one you can also see here on youtube as most common sense). 3/4 of English-speakers are no classic natives. for simple reasons: if one Polish guy meet an Italian in Berlin then they speak usually English. If they meet together 5 Germany then all switch to English. This synchronization mechanism of a lingua franca spreads around the world - makes it in every second even more important. No chance ever has Chinese or Spanish (total absurd). Both regions have soon reached their demographic peak. Then it goes down. This is not the case with more liberal countries for several reasons. India will be the biggest country and the biggest English-speaking one - together with the neigboars btw, (Pakistan, Bangladesh ... all with English as official language and most relevant lingua franca - and all will have an huge population). Similar in Africa with Nigeria ... in Europa English is already English the most spoken language and raster raising then all the other languages. There are some studies saying that English will be learned 2015 from about 3 billion people in the world. The real question is: will for the next time at first be China (several hundred of million people are learning English) or India faster to become the biggest English-speaking country ...
