In 1982 we had a pretty dismal King Crab season after being in the top ten boats the previous few years. The owner left for Seattle leaving me to get the boat and gear ready for Tanner Crab. A few weeks later I got a call to bring the boat to Seattle for 'yard work'. I argued that the boat was just three years old and in darned good shape but, it was his boat so we headed south. When we got to the yard there was a huge assortment of what I knew was trawling gear; winches, net drums, two sets of doors, huge pulleys and sheaves and three of the biggest nets this six trip Kodiak shrimper had ever seen. The boat had been built with this future in mind; we had a stern ramp which was covered over to hold crab pots, our main engine had almost 1100 hp which no crab boat needed, we had a CAT 3406 powering more hydraulics than any crab boat needed. She was to become a trawler- one of those boats we 'real fishermen' scorned. The conversion did not take long and soon we were learning the new fishery. It was a disaster. Finally got it figured out and we started making some money. Dealing with the Russians was interesting to say the least.
It's called Smith Butchering machine which was introduced in 1906, Vancouver. I came across the nickname "iron chink" from a book called "the greater Vancouver". It's interesting to see a video about that on RU-vid. Anyway, I am Chinese, haha.
This boat isn't 1 of the greatest. I've been on 5 different ships and this was not a good 1. Mid 90s they told me I'd be the galley assistant..got to the ship in Dutch & some crazy East India biotch was in my position..I heard she DEMANDED to be in the galley, someone said they saw her in Seattle office throwing a fit ..but Y would they send her up if so ? Anyway I was not so stoked to see this. I was fired but at least I made 1k in a month & they flew me home.
Thanks for much for sharing. My dad would tell me stories of those days of fishing. Nice to see the old footage. I grew up fishing on the beaches of Ekuk.
I wish it didn’t have jolly nostalgic nursery rhymes music…I think the reality was rather brutal and bleak..and in a sense, actually ‘modern’ in a sense that it was brutally rational. They were penny saving.
Great to have some idea of what they where like! my grandfather's first boat was a 1919 gillnetter. i love these boats and since he got that one and built a cabin on it, our family have been boating for decades. thanks!
I remember this. I was in the coast guard and pulled 4-5 week patrols on the Soviet hake fleet. We were more worried about by catch of prohibited species like salmon and marine mammals. Bopping around out there for five weeks was fun. Boarding boasts and the factory ships. An amazing time.
With the high grocery prices and the death of the ocean, I've been eating high protein soylant green crackers. I get two boxes a week on my food stamp program. They taste delicious
Thanks. I Just bought a book "How To Build Wooden Boats". It's a reprint of his 1935 book. I've never heard of EM before but he sounds like an important designer. I'm looking forward to building one of his classic designs.
This method completely decimated and iniahlated the salmon runs for all future generations. Greed and ignorance abounded, I'm ashamed at what our forefathers did. They left a depleted ocean for their children and grandchildren, how was that ever a good plan? They must be so proud they were smarter than a fish! The natives would only fish the edges of the run and let the majority go by! I marvel at the bygone age in total disgust. Yes they were pirates alright, no doubt about it.
Ah, and for years Canadian trollers intercepted Washington and Oregon salmon headed south along the outside of Vancouver Island. That must make them fish pirates too! And yes, the International North Pacific Salmon Commission was initially formed by treaty to regulate and research both Canadian and U.S. salmon runs sharing both waters. U.S. fisheries were legally allocated a portion of Canadian-bound stocks as part of the yearly regulations, so not a piracy issue in that regard, although fish trap piracy certainly did occur then.
Starbound used to be the pride of the fleet, knocking out Fifty tons of fillets a day with only three 182s. By the mid nineties it was going downhill just like it's fishery. They stretched it to about 300 feet awhile back. Don't know anything about it now. On for over three years as a supervisor I had some great friends
