Four minutes after crewmembers smelled smoke aboard the F/V Galaxy, near the Pribilof Islands in October, 2002, a backdraft explosion blew three senior officers through a small hatch at the stern and into the Bering Sea. The event transformed an emgergency into a full-blown crisis.
