good video. well done. when I was getting ready to launch the marshall was chit-chatting back and forth with no hand signals. my wing all laid out for forward take off then all of a sudden a pilot lands on my wing. nearly hitting me at 6.59. dave manning in blue coat walking along he saw it ..i went into one and shouted pilots need to take off in this field.. and those who want to land use the next field. geez.other then that. all good.

I have a Polini Thor 180. I had a weird issue where the engine would run perfectly with full fuel but as it went down below half tank it would start to lean out more and more. After some tinkering and very close inspection I found the fuel lines at the carburetor weren't particularly tight on the nipples. After I used safety wire to clamp them good and tight I haven't had any issues in 50 some hours of flight time. As the fuel level got lower and lower they would start sucking air. Another friend had a Simonini and had what seemed like very erratic performance, similar to what your engine sounded like. Since he had the same carburetor as I did we checked his fuel lines but that wasn't the issue, we put a new pump diaphragm in the carb and it resolved his issue. The pump carbs used in a lot of paramotors were designed for use in chainsaws. their pumps weren't designed to pull fuel from tanks mounted so far below the engines. This makes the fuel pump section susceptible to failure. I'd also very highly recommend (if you don't have one already) install a very large fuel filter. A lot of paramotor and UL guys for some reason use little tiny filters, which if become even slightly plugged will cause fuel starvation issues. You want a filter so big that it can start to get contaminated and you will have plenty of time to inspect the filter and see debris before it builds up to a point that it starts to starve your engine. Also use a paper type filter, not a metal screen. Paper has a much better filtering capability. I run a 3 micron filter on my motor.
@Parahooners
@Parahooners 2 месяца назад
Great advice. I had an inline paper filter on my old frame and it was great to be able to see the condition of it. I think my issue is carb related. The pump diaphragm was definitely old and baggy as it was the original kit after 130hrs. Hopefully the carb kit will resolve it. I will also double check all the hose connections and make sure no air is getting in. Thanks for your comment

AIR LEAK IN THE INLET ..................
@Parahooners
@Parahooners 2 месяца назад
Yes a few have mentioned air in the fuel line. Maybe I should run it up in the rack and see if there are bubbles?
@dkumpula001
@dkumpula001 2 месяца назад
It's kind of hard to hear your engine clearly right before the last time it died, but assuming you were pushing it kinda hard for an extended period before it finally died I'd be focusing on fuel related issues. If it was hard cut-outs or gradual engine power loss over time, then I'd focus on electrical issues. For the former, I'd ask if there were significant bubbles in your fuel line upon landing. If not, I'd then consider clunk, how old your fuel was (assuming you aren't using fuel stabilizer), and a carb rebuild. My Atom-80 requires a carb rebuild every hundred hours and it's getting cranky by then so I keep on top of that. I'd also check/clean/replace your airbox and sponge and check your reed petals when you rebuild the carb. Electrical route debugging should include testing the coil and ensuring your kill switch isn't getting grounded unintentionally. I don't believe your symptoms matched a kill switch grounding, but a bad coil is a possibility. In flight, the only thing I keep an eye on is CHT. That way a sudden spike in engine temp can help you identify a bad gasket letting in excess air. If you overdue on rebuilding the carb, you are likely overdue for replacing several of the gaskets in the fuel/air flow path. Good luck finding the issue!
@Parahooners
@Parahooners 2 месяца назад
Thanks. The aibox was new, it definitely has more a fuel starved vibe. So I've changed the clunk and rebuilt the carb. I also changed the HT cap as it had a split. I checked the reed valve whilst I had the carb off and it was perfect. The carb did look a bit tired. Sounds like it was well due having never done it on a 130hr engine. I have since had an hour long flight without the engine cutting out. 🤞🏻Thanks for watching and for your advice.

@mmcowan
@mmcowan 2 месяца назад
Like everyone says here, first make sure your fuel delivery is clean and clear. A silent killer on that is if you're breather valve (in the fuel cap?) is not allowing air in the tank. If that all comes clear, I've seen this exact thing happen on two Mosters recently where it was a bad crankshaft seal letting air into the engine.
@Parahooners
@Parahooners 2 месяца назад
Oh dear. Hope it's not the crankshaft seal. That's got calamity written all over it. Fuel cap is a great shout though. Should as simple as blowing through it in one direction to check as well shouldn't it?
@mmcowan
@mmcowan 2 месяца назад
Yes, you should be able to blow from the outside of the cap through to the inside of the cap (just tested mine). Replacing the crankshaft seal on the Moster is a little annoying, but not horrible. You’re supposed to do them every 100hrs anyway. FWIW, it was the seal behind the starter that failed on both of the motors I saw.

If I have to run backwards at all, I do a forward launch. If I've engine problems, I just comb thru ALL of it. Hell, its only a handful of parts. Primer bulbs are evil... Spark or fuel, haha. Likely not compression, so...

No point in having lots of fuel if the engine isn't working 😂. That sounds electrical to me. Check your kill switches, then ohms test all your wires. The exact same thing happened to me before. Always know where the wind is coming from and always have an out. Really bad timing with that plane about to take off though. That would have made me a little worried to
@Parahooners

Okay, so jokes aside, I’m 12 minutes in, is this a fuel valve problem? Have you turned the breather pipe valve off? Are you dealing with a vacuum? I’ve been there.
@Parahooners
@Parahooners 2 месяца назад
Steve could be right.… On the tank cap the other day, it released a hiss of air. Maybe, just maybe, it's not allowing air in, and as a result, the altitude worsens as the tank decompresses?
