Hi, I’m Carey Alvez. I’m an award winning artist who has taught hundreds of students to draw stunning realistic portraits of the people they love.
Many have a desire to draw beautiful, realistic portraits of the people in their life and long to develop the skills of a true artist. And that’s what I help them to do.
When they see what they’re capable of, they develop an immense amount of confidence in themselves and people around them view them differently. They often hear exclamations of, “Wow! When did you become an artist?!” On my RU-vid channel, you’ll get a taste of techniques I use to teach my students to become incredible artists.

your welcome, it makes for a far more interesting image in the long run. Check out this video on that very subject: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WfznaJV8RP4.html
You show how to make this, it's a mirror. You recommend this as a drawing aid. Ok I've tried it and it's extremely difficult to use. I myst be doing something wrong. Please post a video showing how to use it, one in which you complete a drawing using it.
This is mixed media, the base is acrylic washes on watercolour paper, then I use watercolour pencils, pastel chalks, charcoal. Sometimes I will add chalk pastels or even graphite. Really just depends on the piece. Will be posting more on this drawing technique in future months. Thanks for your feedback.
Nobody is a true artist unless they can work with all mediums and draw different subjects such as people, animals, objects, landscapes and buildings. The biggest challenge for an artist is to be flexible with any subject 🎨
Funny this comes up in my feed bc I'm painting a round canvas I stretched last week. 😂 imo, if ur an artist that hasn't used a mirror, u def aren't very imaginative or inventive 😂
Your Way of doing it was completely new to me, but you are very good at explaining how you do everything. 🙏🎶♥️🎵 … I know all the other ways of seeing my work more clearly using a normal Mirror behind me or just taking a photo but since I mostly paint from memories, dreams, imagination and I use “ the felt sense” of a scenario its not just the visuel but ratherva “ synkinaesthetic felt sense” I use to judge whether its “ vibrational alive” 🙃🎵💜🎶
I love this, I strive to paint in my own personal work the same way, its a feeling, experiential image I'm trying to show, and that is far more important. The mirror is just a handy little tool, easy to make, I have a number of the sitting around the studio easy to grab. thanks for your feedback
I discovered that by myself, when I had the idea of putting the drawing in front of a mirror, later I saw dozens of people saying the same. And i read also the explantion, it has to do with the brain.
Hi, love your work. When you tone your paper, how do you get rid of the buckling before you begin drawing on it? Additionally, do you use watercolour paper for these type of pieces where you tone the surface or the stonehenge paper that you often use?
i use arches hot pressed WC paper 300ib. I tape it to the board before I treat it and dry it with a hair dryer between layers and let it completely dry overnight with books on it before I remove it from the board.
@@sameer3392 with this process you need good masking tape (beige color) from the hardware store because there is a lot of soaking the paper. Green painters tape will lift from the water. When you are ready to remove the tape pull it AWAY from your paper SLOWLY or it will rip your paper.
Use a full range of pencils, as you make areas darker grab a softer darker pencil. Also developing the habit of a very sharp pencil tip and using a light touch, built up over layers help as well. I myself had to learn NOT to be so heavy handed when drawing. Check this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DyJra48srgg.html
@@careyalvezartschool thank you for sharing that, I will practice that for sure. I definitely have not been keeping my pencils sharp as I go softer, and usually only to a 4b.
why do you need two pieces of glass? you could use one mirror and cover one side sith black contact paper. Or, put black paper on and back it up with a piece of cardboard. After all you only need one side for the black mirror
@@careyalvezartschool I kept waiting for you to say "it's a good thing" at the end. Lol, very cool vid tho. Will black tissue paper work instead of the construction board?
I’ve always turned my work upside down, it was a tip from an art teacher many, many years ago. But I am going to try this ‘black mirror’ tip out of curiosity. Thanks 👍🏻☺️
4:48 the closer we hold the pencil to the point, the more detailed and “tight”. Better to use shoulder arm at first, then arm and elbow, then wrist…THEN closer to the point (wrist and fingers)for final details. Seems to be one of the most common reasons beginners get frustrated: they’re doing “detail” work from the very beginning. That’s like trying to hang up pictures and decorating a room before the drywall is up. Completely futile and a waste of time and energy.
3:26 all that graphite that went into the bin could be put to great drawing use. I recently discovered a channel that uses graphite shavings and an eraser to draw, amazingly well. The channel is called GP Like (not affiliated in any way, but I’m all about using up supplies that wd otherwise be thrown out in creative ways)
Good video, but could you not have just bought one frame and used the backing board that comes as part of the frame? The mirror doesn't need to be double-sided does it?
I use to teach portrait photography and used the technique of turning a proof up side down when you knew something just wasn't right but you couldn't quite figure out what it was. I have never seen the black mirror technique but would have used it for sure. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.
Dear Carey, thank you a lot. I appreciate you advise. My question is - why do we need namely black mirror, not conventional, usual mirror? Have a good day
That is a good question, what I have found is that a conventional mirror reflects a LOT of light creating a lot of distraction. the black mirror tones everything down, makes it easier to focus and actually reflects colour back very accurately. I studied at an art Academy. we all had them, never gave it much thought really. It was just a great little tool, simple to make , was as common as a can opener in the kitchen.
Please watch this video for the process: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-31HjlBuT-fs.html You will see all the stages in their proper sequence. thanks for watching!
Hello from India 🇮🇳. My niece, a trained fashion designer bt one of the Greatest design institutions of Asia, told me to view my paintings from up side down. She just won one Gold 🥇 Medal and one national level trophy 🏆as First Prize for her creative design.
This is great! I use a mirror all the time to check my work, especially the composition. Like you said, I become more objective and I see it with fresh eyes. Great tip, love it!
