Ray is a full-time carer to a disabled partner. Aged 51, he enjoys listening to a wide variety of music. As the pseudonym suggests, he also happens to play the flute. When not listening to or playing music, he can be found making videos about audio and audio-related subjects, complete with docile British accent and occasional stutter.
I *used* to listen to Absolute 80's a lot. I live in NZ and there's zero 80's radio stations here, one day I click on the link and it tells me I can no longer listen to them online because I don't live in the UK. Needless to say I was extremely pissed off
I have a really silly question, my speakers (speaker box 5's) have a red and a black on the back. How do I connect them both to this preamp? It only has 1 set of outs.
You will need an integrated amplifier to drive your speakers - one with a volume control and audio inputs. The setup should go as follows: Turntable > phono preamplifier > integrated amplifier > speakers The preamplifier shown here only raises the signal level to that required by an audio input on an amplifier or other sound system with an auxiliary input.
@@ecinaz I don’t see why not. I am guessing that involves a Technics headshell mounted to an S shaped tonearm? That would allow you to align any stylus.
I ended up with a Rotel RP830 around the time you got your first 505. I must say, the wooden plinth makes it look a lot better than I remember them looking. John Miles - More Miles Per Hour. Theat's an album I'd completely forgotten about. I'm downloading a FLAC version as I type. Thanks for the reminder.
I was not familiar with the Rotel model, but looking at pictures, I see where manufacturers like Rega and Pro-Ject took inspiration from. It looks ahead of its time.
@@Fluteboy I've given the John Miles one and a half listens, though quietly so as not to wake anybody up. Fella in the Cellar is the only one that felt like a familiar echo. Track 1 is very Roxy Music, another felt like early Genesis were playing a Beatles tune. There's a track that uses a riff very close to Rainbow's Since You've been Gone. Some disco/funk. From last night's listen did I catch a track that had a fiddle tune toward the end but played on guitar? Mostly it didn't move me but there are a few tracks I want to try again. I think I remember Fella in the Cellar because it was my favourite track on the album. I remember I had it on the same C90 tape as Mike Rutherford's Smallcreep's Day album. The Rega Planar 2 and 3 were out before the Rotel RP830. I think the best looking budget deck of that era was the Sansui SR222. The reflective polished plinth versions look like they should have been several times their price. They tended to be seen as second best to the Dual 505 in sonic terms though. Your 505 looks great with the wooden plinth.
Great Turntable… My first Hi-Fi turntable was a Mk1 in 1981 now have a Mk2 like yours but in Oak-ish. Yes there are better but it’s vinyl and that history brings me back to the old Dual… just makes me smile every time I look at it and it still sounds good.
Think of the lovely audio equipment you could buy with 7K! 😳 Well made speakers for under a grand? Better turntable? Better stylus even? Instead he opted for cryogenically enhanced copper! 😜 Bless him.
Have you watched Mat’s most recent Tefifon video, featuring the Tefi single? He suggested that the faster playback could be a result of the plastic tapes shrinking with age. Sounds plausible.
@@Fluteboy Yes, i did watch that one, it was really cool. I wish cuba baion was on a tefi single and a video could be made of it playing 😁 But shrinkage of the tape, maybe. Old magnetic cassette tapes stretch out from use but are made of a completely different material, so i don't know. After listening to both versions of the song multiple times in the past day or so I just feel that there are 2 different recordings and they are in different keys. 🫶😉
This is a very late response, I just viewed your video. Looks like the ML is a good choice, but your graphic of the 95’s variants helped me a great deal. Thanks.
I would choose either the C or E variant. The C would be best if you are playing a lot of used or worn records. If you want more detail, then the E will suit.
I thought this was nonsense but i found some of this cable in my scrap tin. i replaced the 3 core mains cables I was using to drive my LSA Statement 2 speakers and suddenly I'm an Audiophile. I am willing to accept I was wrong to think the speaker cables just need to be a decent pair of copper wires. The sound is brighter with more treble. The base is sharper. The sound image is fuller, not just sound coming from left and right speakers themselves but filled in between. See, I told you it had turned me into one of those detestable Audiophiles but I believe it now.
400 series sound much better 480 490 493 . 300 serie has cheaper mechanics and is very kluncky . the microswitches in the cassettecompartment arent even shielded against dust .. They are the worst in the business 300 series .. These people below are no experts at all
Thanks for the informative video! If everything goes well, the AT-VM95E will arrive tomorrow and replace the old AT-3600. I'm looking forward to Pink Floyd, Mark Knopfler and Yello :-)
I have also 2 Dual 505 turntables and also the AT95E and the ATVM95EN and VM95C I tried them on my Dual 505 and i found that they sound great,i also installed the extra weight on the back of the counterweight so the whole counterweight came closer to the pivot point and balanced better. Those 95 series are excellent cartridges ✌️
I also installed the extra counterweight ring, as the increased mass of the cartridge required it. Some call it jerryrigging, but it allows everything to function properly. 😉
Had my Yamaha KX-393 for a few days now and I'm well impressed by it..Good looking machine and sounds very good but really sparkles with TDK metal position MA's..👍
As I did in this video. The ultimate solution was to replace the tonearm, at a cost of £20 or £25. The hardest part of this is soldering in those very fine wires. Replacing the gimbal bearings is just too finicky. The site dualfred .de sells many parts.
@@nebojsageorgijev675 From what I remember, once you disconnect the signal wires under the chassis, you then unscrew and remove the tracking force knob, and this allows you to remove the tonearm from the bearing frame. On the dualfred site, if you need to replace the rectangular bearing frame, this is part number 237230
I love Dual. Closest I have to that one is two Dual 506-1. One was my Dads. Plus own a 1229 and 8 other Duals. The sounds is great on them. Plus they treat the investment on records well.
Hi, discovered your channel a few days ago which ended up with me buying a fully serviced Dual 505.2 turntable. I also use QED 79 as i feel you cant really go wrong with and its a good price. Whats your view on the sound quality of the Dual ? I like your set up. nice and neat, can i ask what speakers youre using ? My set up so far is Yamaha AS 301 amp, Fyne Audio F300 bookshelf speakers. My only source at the moment is my IMac to Panasonic plasma by Thunderbolt lead then optical from the tv to the amp. Not ideal but looking forward to the Dual arriving. Im wondering though if my speakers are a bit on the small side? Thanks, Ive subbed
The speakers used in the video are Gale 3030’s, though I am now using Wharfedale Diamond 9.1’s. The Dual is normally used with the Ortofon OM cartridge, though I changed this for the Audio Technica AT-VM95E which has a more open treble response. Your speakers may be small, but if you place them on stands and close to a wall, they will perform at their best.
@@Fluteboy thank you. The Dual has arrived and its fitted with an AT3600 cartridge/stylus. Dug a few vinyl out the garage and theyre not in great condition so will get some newer ones. I looked at your other videos and saw the speaker one, thanks again.
I picked up a used pair of Wharfedale 9.0's a couple of months ago for £20. I'm using them in a desk system with an oldish Mordaunt Short MS302 8" subwoofer which definitely helps give more body. Music is better when you can hear the bassist is having fun.
I find that if I double run the XT speaker cable in my system, I get more bottom body like a thicker cable does. Did my double run reduce the cable's impedance and thus paved the way for more amp power? Now sounds like a 500quid cable! Double run meaning a pair for the left and a pair for the right, eliminating the plugs if need be, bare wired twisted ends.
Great cassette deck. Own the KX580 Special Edition. What is striking is that my KX580se spools faster than the KX393, that's because the 580 has 2 motors and the 393 has 1 motor. The 580se also has a higher erase frequency of 160 kHz, so that your own recordings do not add any extra bias noise and are therefore good for a better signal-to-noise ratio. Why the 580se has Dolby S on it is a big mystery to me, because with Dolby C you no longer have any noise. The KX580se performs very well with TDK SA, but performs excellently with Metal tape such as the TDK MA-XG, the sound quality with this tape is really as good as digital sound. I have trouble believing my ears and yet it continues to surprise me time and time again. Considering the simple mechanics more than an excellent performance. The 393 will have a bit more noise I think, but is still a lot better than average. Both the 393 and 580se use the same Hard Permoloy Yamaha GF-37 Focus Field head produced by Canon!!! Another advantage is that the reliability is more than excellent with this series of decks, trouble-free machines.
I just found out about this cartridge and found one new on eBay for $50. Now I’m trying to figure out how good it is (VN95E). I figure this model is a good one to start off bc the cartridge are interchangeable. Oh and it’s going on a vintage Technics SL 1400 direct drive. Oh and in the late 80’s I manage to find 2 US Technics 1200 used for a British girl /friend so she could learn how to dj. She plugged them in a blew them up or short circuit both bc she didn’t change the voltage switch.
They should put the white version after the green one by price range. Didn’t know there was 6 versions and just ordered the green ones. Oh and thanks for the great review and the breakdown on the hours they will last. .
Hello.Ηow is the sound of technics sl-ps670d cd player?Treble is soft or harsh?Bass is deep or adequate?I found one used.I can't tolerate harsh highs and I like deep bass.Warm sounding or cool sounding?
Technics products are renowned for having a warm and generous bass, combined with a treble that is never bright. Any of their players will suit your preference. This will not saw your ears off with a relentless treble.
