Cartridges were a stupid move for the N64. Most of the multiplatform titles did not get the Squaresoft treatment, the 64 version was usually missing quite a bit, and not implementing painstaking measures needed to get more out of the video and sound hardware with such limited storage.

Just regarding a technical limitation which turned into great game design : I've always thought "Stop The Express" on ZX Spectrum was built totally around the system's limitations. It just plays so well, with no attribute clashes and scrolls smoothly around the playable character who stays centred in the screen most of the time.

The reason Final Fantasy came on multiple CDs was likely more due to the FMVs than due to the static backgrounds. Video uses a ton of storage compared to images.

Great video. One missconception people do, though, it's that N64 stretched and smudged textures were due to cartridge space, and that it's not really true, the problem was the transfer speed of the textures. Later, developers learnt how to stream textures directly from cartridge, so it really was only the cartridge space limiting the visuals. I have read that Tomb Raider 1 has 18mb worth of textures, N64 cartridges could hold these 18mb easily. For intensive pre-rendered games like FF7, though, it would be really impossible to fit in one cartridge at the time. One thing that N64 really can't do well, was CGs, because of space. RE2 is really a little miracle. I can remember that only StarCraft 64 had some CGs, but it was really a few, and short. Another problem discussing these consoles, it's that people really let the fanboy side speak in favor of PS1. You can find a lot of people talking about N64 stretched and smudged textures, but good luck finding someone pointing out how terrible PS1 managed 3d images due to the lack of z-buffer, or things like no filter in textures, which means ugly big square pixels when next to the camera, characters and backgroung trembling (due to the said lack of z-buffer), textures warping, elements clipping, etc. People make look like N64 has nothing going on for it and PS1 had no flaws. For me, lots of Ps1 games were unplayable due to how incorrect and annoying the 3d graphics were. Some skilled developers managed to aleviate a little all those problems, but in certain games it's simply unbereable. Important to say that yes, I found that smudged n64 textures annoying too. The first time I saw Ocarina of Time, my first impressions were not good, I saw someone playing inside the Deku Tree and everything looked blurry with poor frame-rate. Only by playing the game in it's entirety, that I got to respect and love the game. So I only say congrats for videos like this, because it shows both consoles strenghts and weaknesses, without a single note of bias.

The N64 could have been so much better if it used CD-based media and had a dedicated chip in the console for video decoding. The N64 technically had better hardware than the 32-bit PS1 but it lacked the storage capasity because of slightly out dated catridges and it lacked FMV because of no dedicated video decoder (I know that some games like Pokemon Puzzle League had a FMV intro but this was using the cartridge an wasn't built into the N64 itself). Nintendo went with Cartidge-based media for the N64 because they were trying to mitigate piracy. As to why the N64 didn't have a video decoding chip was mostly likely to with price and hardware.

I've been feeling some limitations in my own game dev experience. I've been making a bullet hell SHMUP in PGMMV. If you've used that engine before, you understand how bad of an idea that is. I can have about as many bullets on screen without lag as Recca, my favorite Famicom SHMUP, has in it's most dense parts. This is actually a good thing, I think. It forced me to learn the fundamentals, so I can make a low density pattern threatening and interesting, instead of just using more bullets. Now that I'm done with bullet pattern design, everything but the final pattern looks pretty bad. But, well, I've gotta release the game eventually.

You couldn't have games like Mario 64, Ocarina of Time on a slow 2x CD drive as Nintendo wanted. Mario 64 on 2x CD-ROM would had smaller areas and hurting the level design.

almost all N64 games were total garbage, Playstation was so much better, it's not even a contest. Everything about N64 was a big step down from SNES and just low rent trash. The controller was this 3 donged monstrosity, the games were these low effort kiddie games, no good RPGs, no strategy games, etc. They could have made good games like Mario 64 and Goldeneye (I just listed half of the good games for N64.) and they just chose to try to get the 64 to do things it wasnt meant to do. And no, the Zelda games werent good. it was also trash. If you like Zelda games, you have McDonalds tier taste in video games. Im tired of pretending N64 was good. I hated it as a kid and passed on getting one, and it still sucks looking back on it today.

The graphical techniques used in the early Metal Gear Solid titles cause the games to age shockingly well in terms of visuals. MGS1 is admittedly still rough by today's standards, but MGS2 and 3 both look great even today. It's because when you don't display a lot of stuff at once, the objects you do display can be higher poly and have higher resolution textures. The character models are lifelike in the ps2 games. Final Fantasy VIII also used a similar technique, making backgrounds static images so the poly count could be focused on the character models. And wow, many FFVIII models look almost passable as PS2 models they are so detailed and good looking. FFVIII is one of the few ps1 games that i think still holds up visually.

I own a few games on both consoles, and besides graphical differences, multiplayer was probably a reason to get the 64 version because it could support 4 players easily. Playstation's multi tap probably wasn't programmer friendly. In hindsight some PS1 versions only supported 2 players while the 64 version allowed 4 players.

Nintendo games were strictly made by Nintendo (which had versatile and well-equipped in-house software divisions for their arcade games and could easily port successful games to their home consoles), while PS1 games were made by third-party game developers, as Sony had no prior experience in game development.

Nintendo 64 had more powerful CPU and GPU so it was faster at 3D rendering. At the same time PSX used simplified integer math (it didn't even have FPU capabilities!) and rendered 3d in very simplistic way (didn't even render textures correctly and used only some approximation for perspective) and with that could easily outperform N64 hardware in performance. On top of that N64 had texture cache issue which limited texture sizes to at most 64x64 at 8-bit (256 colors) while PSX could easily display larger textures and often did. Even original Doom used larger textures than 64 pixels. That is why N64 has very blurry textures. One could argue what good would be bigger textures with limited cart storage and the answer is: generating textures on the fly. Even Doom didn't store each texture as is and composed some of them from simpler textures. Say you have transparent dirt texture which you apply over different wall textures. Another thing is that PSX had much larger fill-rate and alpha blending performance. That is why you could have tons of transparency effects in one scene with reasonable performance and N64 struggled with more complicated lighting effects. Another difference is that PSX developers had full access to hardware. Nintendo on the other hand limited access and forced developers to use functions baked in in to their SDK limiting potential optimizations and effects games could do. This is for example responsible for all games having bilinear texturing and AA filters as even if performance would be better without them this was something forced on developers. Later N gave some more room to developers but then some of the characteristics of N64 games were expected on this console so even if it was possible to optimize games further by making graphics more like on PSX it was not done. Games were thus always blurry and choppy on N64. Oh and one more thing: N64 has surely much faster storage but the main advantage was not so much transfer speeds but latency. PSX developers often copied data multiple times so that all needed data could be loaded in one go when loading levels... and still had many hundreds of megabytes left for FMV's and digitized music.

Who thought it was a good idea to poke fun at this person's accent in the subtitles? Real funny. If that wasn't the intent, then all these errors display clear ignorance of the gaming world, including the mishandling of Mario's name in 3 different ways and saying Nintendo wrong. What really took the cake was "fan offense to seven" when Final Fantasy 7's case was right on the screen. Context matters.

You had a couple non-factual statements in the video. For one, you stated that Playstation only had small environments while N64 had large open world's (when you compared TLoZ: OoT to MGS). That's just wrong. Many games on PS1 had large open world's, such as Spyro and Twisted Metal etc. And you mentioned "..Full motion video, which only the Playstation had" That's false as well. RE2, Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune etc had FMV on N64..

You realize that both PS3 and Xbox 360 had advantages and disadvantages, i can explain you PS3 advantages: PS3 disadvantages: -Blu ray storage of 50GBs -Overly complex CPU -HDD by default -Split memory RAM Xbox 360 advantages: Xbox 360 disadvantages: -Easier to develop -Limited capacity of DVD with 6.8GBs(then later 7.95GBs) -Unified Memory RAM -No HDD by default, which means games have to be designed with streaming speed of DVD drive You can see how Uncharted 3, The Last of Us may have better graphics/visuals than Xbox 360 first party games, but they have smaller environments compared to games like Halo 4, Gears 3. Games designed with streaming speed of DVD on Xbox 360 lead to loading times and constant texture pop-in. With limited capacity of 6.8GBs on DVD, games can have repeating textures/assets
