Ah, games not holding your hands. How I miss this. These days, there'd be a lengthy explanation of the flight controls directly after stage 3 and then you'd be forced into playing a no-stakes tutorial level.

Lol, invisible game design. Sounds more like foundational game design to me.

Design Patterns is an overloaded term and I was not expecting this when the YT algorithm displayed it to me, but...this was interesting, regardless. Good Sleight of Hand to get me here. ;)

+Brax1982 Yeah, he should come up with a different term for these, or at least name the patterns individually. If there's any point to "design patterns" it should be creating shared terminology for recurring behavior.

Sleight of hand would be the actually act of doing something the audience doesn't notice, but what you're referring to; the distractions done to keep eyes away from the sleight of hand, would be misdirection.

2:45 Funny enough I actually found Mario immediately as my eyes were already wandering around that location.

Not bad! It's funny how this varies across folks. My wife asked me to go back, pause the video, so she could take her time finding Mario haha.

+Kalsonic Yup, I'm now making smaller videos (~5 mins) so hopefully i'll be able to make more.

This is awesome! Do you think it's better to force the player to explore and interact with the world in order to figure out how to play, or just outright ask if the player would like a tutorial? I personally think the second one is better since veterans can just select 'no' and get on with the game, while new players can select 'yes' and learn the game's mechanics quicker.
@daltreywaters
@daltreywaters 9 лет назад
I don't think a game's design needs to be an either/or option regarding how a game may teach it's mechanics to the player. Elegant designs, as I attempt to convey on my videos, merge the two so that the act of exploring is also the tutorial in itself.

+Squid Kid I'd like games to not have a tutorial dare in the menu little own the game ex. do a 12 move combo. You will learn in the game (don't make parts for it!). If there's 22 move combos then you can have a scroll list like in ninja gaiden black or somethin.

Generally, it's not a good idea to put a 'Tutorial' option in the main menu screen. People tend not to click on that, although it varies from game to game - depending on the genre and the complexity of the game. The problem with humans is that we love to learn something (the feeling of learning something) but don't like to learn (the, often, tedious process of learning). The solution is a tutorial hidden within game-play. An environment safe to explore, without negative repercussions for players' actions, yet challenging enough just to learn the basic mechanic - jumping and running in Mario's case. There are other examples of learning without learning. One example is a math game where the players (usually kids) learn math without having to actually do any math work. It's a side scrolling game where players are presented a math problem, but in order to pass the level they do not have to solve the math problem. Rather, the problem solves itself as the player progresses through the level. Example: The level says: 8 - 5 = ___ and in order to see the result, you must jump 3 platforms. When you reach the third platform, they highlight and a result is displayed 8 - 5 = 3 If the game asked the player to solve the problem in order to open the door (pass the level), it wouldn't appeal to them as much.

I never realized you were forced to test out the plane in DKR before entering Hot Top Volcano. Clever. ...well, almost. There is one balloon you can get with the hovercraft instead. World 2 is also only reachable via plane.

"Literally rewrote the book"... :/ I wish, because then I would buy that book and then learn how to read it. Also, a lot of the things you say are "subconscious" are not. Well, not for me.
@daltreywaters
@daltreywaters 8 лет назад
+Snowflake Pillow Looking back at this video (it's been two years already... wow...) I realize a better word would have been "implicit" over "subconscious". I think that best describes what I was trying to say - that these effects weren't designed to be perceptible by the user, but the contrary, albeit still recognizable by those with a keen eye.
@snowflakepillow8697
@snowflakepillow8697 8 лет назад
Except they (effects like mario turning into stars or flipping into a level) are literally designed to catch EVEN THE DULLEST EYED USER'S ATTENTION.

the pacing of the video is too slow

+Hal337 You mean i'm talking too slow? Or the edits and exposition in itself is slow?
