Welcome to Stubbs Aquatics. This channel is all about having fun. I gladly share my 50 years of experience in this hobby. I am not a professional nor do I claim to be one. I just love the hobby. I breed Shubunkin Goldfish, Barbs and Koi. I have five garden ponds that flow into each other. This takes up my entire backyard. I have a dedicated fish room. This room contains 15 aquariums, half of them are planted tanks. We also do fish profiles and product reviews. I do my best to put out a video every Tuesday and Friday I hope you will consider subscribing. I look forward to hearing from you Proud Supporter of Mental Health Email jcstubbings21@gmail.com Instagram at Stubbs Aquatics
I definitely enjoy your koi videos and makes me jealous of your outdoor ponds. That being said you need to do what’s best for you and your likings. Don’t let RU-vid dictate what you do unless it what you want.
Thanks buddy. RU-vid frustrates me but doesn't dictate what fish I keep.. The headache of special needs for koi definitely frustrates me ... I like them but not sure if I would have them again...if that makes sense..
Great video Chris 👍 Perhaps not concentrate on man-made filtration, but perhaps a more natural and large bog filter? You don't see K1 type filters in nature, and I think your ponds would look better with natural filtration. I know nothing about Shubunkins, but can they live together with Koi? If so, perhaps grow on your Shubunkins alongside the Koi. Hope you're well.
I certainly hear your frustration my friend. As you know it took me the better part of three years to sort out my new pond. Over that period I flip flopped about keeping my koi or getting rid of them, I’ve had some of my koi for ober 16 yrs. As koi grow they require much more attention. With me it’s constant observation and maintenance. Since building my new pond three yrs ago I have been on a very nasty emotional roller coaster, however I will tell you that it has all been worth it. Now that my pond seems to be healthy (clearest water ever, no issues with fish), I am planning a Reno to increase the space for my fish. This includes ripping out waterfall and bog garden, which I will redesign. After that I will have to build a bigger pond, hopefully several yrs from now. Hang in there. I’ve seen your ponds and koi, you doing an awesome job. Stress and frustration are all part of keeping koi!
I'm in the same dilemma, But I've decided to sell my Koi to many heartache and treatments. I've mentioned before I'm going to concentrate on shubunken breeding for hopefully enjoyment .Roll on spring 😎🐟🐠🦈🐋
For all your hard work to set up and dig out the koi pond, I think you should fix up the filtration the best you can. I don't think videos do your back yard any justice. I've had the pleasure of seeing it in person, and it's jaw dropping !
Id say this requires alot more thought, its really down to what you want chris. I suppose it makes sense with the amount of goldfish you breed but at the same time your koi are very impressive and have started reaching a nice size.
I’m here for it all! The pond, the koi, the landscape, and the goldfish! That pond relaxes and calms me. Those koi are beautiful! If there’s one thing this last year has taught me, it’s life is short. Do what brings you joy, not what you think others will enjoy. I put up a thrifting video and lost 20 subscribers in one day. Will I do it again? Yup! Because it’s what I enjoy. I like variety. My tribe, those who also like variety, will find me. 💚
Thanks so much for the shout out...very much appreciated. Sounds like you're on the horns of a dilemma when it comes to deciding between koi and goldfish. I would suggest giving it some thought over the coming months and I'm sure you come the decision that's right for you. I'm always looking at and thinking of ways to change my filtration. Some times my ideas work well, other times are complete failures but to me that's part of the koi keeping hobby. I had the same problem with my Eazy Pod last year and made the repair to get things up and running again for approximately $10 and a few scraped and bloody knuckles. I don't recall exactly what I used but will certainly check it out now that the outdoor pond has been shut down for the winter and will let you know. I do know the repair didn't involve and expensive EA parts. Hang in there, you'll sort something out fish wise.
Thank you for the shoutout my friend :) I get where you’re coming from. I’ve been meaning to reach out for a while now about some of the topics you’re covering here. I’m going to shoot you a message over insta
You should keep what makes YOU the happiest Chris. Your shubunkins are beautiful, as is your koi. It’s a tough decision to make. Thank you my friend for the shout out. ❤😊
Chris mate …… we all have times when every thing seems to go wrong and it totally puts you where you are now , you koi are stunning my friend and it would seem such a shame to move them on , Maybe get the man the myth the legend that is my koi obsession to come up to you and go through a few things with you , But I know you love your shubunkins , so it’s will be where your heart is mate , And guess what we all love your videos so chin up mukka and soldier on , and if you ever want to know anything I might be able to advise you on , just ask , 👍😎😎😎
I'm guessing because you made the koi pond deeper/bigger you would naturally need more filtration to keep it clean, it does get expensive with the more fish, tanks and ponds you get, I can only imagine how you must be feeling, I feel the same and I don't have nowhere near as many as you have, you will figure it out Chris, you have the whole winter to decide what you want to do, it's never easy though. full watch.
I love your koi videos. They are the reason I subscribed! Having said that, if they are causing you more stress than pleasure, perhaps it may be time for a change.
Well guess what my friend…. That pond will give you more room for your Shubunkins. That will give you an opportunity to keep more of your Shubunkins! I know it has to be a tough decision!
You have some lovely koi Chris you gotta keep em if I could get over to you I would fix up your filters keep on going by the way lLin loved your shubbies 👍👍🚀🚀
I enjoy your koi videos! they're a fish I don't know that much about, and I liked learning about them from you. Plus your ponds ARE beautiful! You know I only keep indoor tanks, and I feel often enough something is always breaking and needs to be replaced, which gets expensive. On a scale as large as yours with your ponds, I imagine that expense increases exponentially and a pump that costs $5/day really sounds like a lot. I understand why you're feeling so frustrated! I would suggest doing whatever gives you the most joy and doesn't make your life harder. Sounds like a really difficult decision when you like the koi so much. Good luck my friend, I feel for ya. 🐟❤️
I hear you, bud. It's a dilemma, isn't it. Thinking to yourself, I'm struggling with things with koi while it would be a goldfish paradise. Honestly, goldfish are such an overlooked fish. Especially here in the UK where aquarium prices go crazy after 100 litres. I can't imagine anyone paying the price you have to pay for a tank that is actually suitable for goldfish and then keeping them. I don't think many people actually know what a full-size adult goldfish looks like. But I wouldn't blame you if you went full goldfish in your ponds. That would give you some next level fish.
I really enjoyed that, mate. I fell in love with shubunkins around 2003. I've always really enjoyed the single tail goldfish. I kept the commons for a long time and then got into shubunkin, and eventually Sarasa. It stands out to me how big of a water volume you give each fish. It's something playing on my mind at the moment. I had one and bought 5 more, so I could get a definite male and female. But I'm reluctant to return the ones I have, and the tank is massively overstocked. I need to bite the bullet and make a decision soon. I'm really looking forward to next season.
