My dad used to love Nearest and Dearest with Jimmy Jewel. She she had such a strong character. I always thought even as a child she had a musical voice, a sort of inherent quality that made her voice sing when she spoke. Kind of hard to explain. But she was bloody good wasn't she!
Wonderful Hylda - this country's funniest-ever comedienne - went round the theatre circuits for years with her act singing, playing the piano, clog dancing and cracking jokes. Then she saw Arthur Worsley, the absolute best ventriloquist in history, who famously never spoke, his dummy Charlie Brown doing all the talking and uproariously funny, and life changed for diminutive Hylda: she got herself an enormously tall male stooge, called him Cynthia, who also never said a word, while Hylda cracked joke after joke. She did this new act on The Good Old Days tv variety show in 1952, and was, after all those years touring round, an overnight star, which she remained for the rest of her life.
this is Not Funny , people must have been so depressed back then . this is untalented badly written if it even had a script which i doubt.. what we have here is a short person talking at a tall person who doesn't talk , so that must be funny .
LOL - Lily's had a lot of experience communicating with the dead married to Walter! LOL Hear that woman laying eggs in the Audience? She was a regular in the audience. Laughter instantly recognised.
Hylda Baker is the ONLY female comedian( comedienne) who ever made me laugh! She was unique in that respect.I have all her TV shows on DVD,the Jimmy Jewel question.....i never knew he was bitter or jealous of Hylda,i always thought of him as Hylda's straight man.Whatever the behind the scenes quabbles nothing takes away Hyldas comedic genius! She was and still is! Hilarious!😊😊😅😅
It's all shite today; they get awards for just saying their lines! They don’t make them like this anymore - comedy greats/classics! The one in the fur coat (Fanny Carby) later played Vera Duckworth’s mother in Coronation Street!
She was incredible…I still laugh at her catch phrases … especially.. “ I must get a little hand put n this watch”!! One of the funniest comedy lines EVER
Hylda had very sad demise. She always dreaded having dementia like her father. Eventually she ended up in a care home, without any recollection of who she was, even when watching herself on tv. When she died it practically went unnoticed in the press with only a handful of mourners. She was cremated in London and her ashes were scattered in the same place as her family in the North. A brilliant actress...
