Wow what an absolute inspiration to comedy 🎭 She was a wonderful ‘ wordsmith’ She should have awards galore ! No one like her now , her comedy timing & quick wit were absolutely brilliant … What a woman …
She was incredible…I still laugh at her catch phrases … especially.. “ I must get a little hand put n this watch”!! One of the funniest comedy lines EVER
Hylda had very sad demise. She always dreaded having dementia like her father. Eventually she ended up in a care home, without any recollection of who she was, even when watching herself on tv. When she died it practically went unnoticed in the press with only a handful of mourners. She was cremated in London and her ashes were scattered in the same place as her family in the North. A brilliant actress...
The TRASH we have to put up with today!. I'm SAT SITTIN' here with my shoulders shaking with laughter @ the glorious memories and FILTHY double entendres .I was only around nine or ten when this was going out in early-mid seventies but I knew DAMN WELL what was being said and what was being MEANT.The audience howling out, my parents sniggering because they KNEW but thaught I didn't, and me sniggering at the back of the room coz I knew they thaught I didn't know!.
I absolutely loved watching Hylda in her various sit-coms. Every time I see her, she brings a smile to my face. They say the best things come in small packages. Well, Hylda was a little gem. Sadly missed. r.i.p. Hylda.
Doubles entendres galore. No wonder the audience howl. Exaggerated, but you can almost recognize your own relatives among the working-class characters. And the actress who played Cousin Lily (centre in the first bit) was marvellous.
Good lord i use to think this lady was so funny when i was a child i never thought i would see this programme again ,,,such a delight, Thank you for sharing
They certainly broke the mould when they made Hylda, I just got the box set of nearest and dearest and 1st series 1st episode I was laughing me cap off !!! I used to watch this with m mam when I was a kid and I came across this the other day. When her friend says has he and rolls her eyes just look at Hyldas expressions and way she says what she says now that is pure comedic genius, loved her mix up of words which probably came from her or it could be the script. But so so funny the way she does them. Eli is good as well,he is funny they bounce off each other well.
@@ChrisR_68 She was in a play with Noel Coward. I don't know what happened between them, but I read that he said "I'd wring that woman's neck if she had one."
Nellie was classic telly, and Baker was a gorgeous shambling wreck of a comic genius. I loved her gentle digs at Walter, and her assaults on the English language are priceless. Her life story is surely ripe for a biopic, and I think Dawn French would be perfect to play Hilda because in Dibley I see a lot of Baker-like mannerisms in Dawn. Thumbs up also to the long suffering Madge Hindle who, like Pat Coombs, is one of Britains great unsung comedic actresses.
All so true. You mention a couple more names from the past. Pat Coombes now she made me laugh before she spoke with her brilliant mannerisms. Happy days.
Jean Ferguson of the Last of the Summer Wine did a one woman stage show about Hylda. I heard the radio version, it was excellent. Apparently all the props and furniture were made large as JF is about 18 inches taller than Hylda was. I had a Hylda moment if my own when telling people that it was _Sheila_ Ferguson who did the show.
I love this program, I managed to hunt down the DVD set of the whole program, I was given a DVD of old programs for a birthday and saw programs I had never seen before and loved many of them , this, love thy neighbour, other things that Hilda Baker was in , she is so funny. Why can't we have any of these old programs shown again , there is nothing like it anymore that really are funny
wonderful, comic timing at it's best.never underrate the work that went into a half hour comedy production each week to this standard, and not a four letter word in the whole thing!!!!
so many comedian's have tried to copy her over the years since her death but there will only ever be one I must get another hand on this watch Hilda Baker RIP
Its a fact that many of Hilda Bakers more successful comedic affectations were copied directly from the work of a predecessor, fellow Lancastrian Jill Summers. Although very successful, Jill did most of her work on stage long before TV took off (although she later appeared in Coronation Street as Phyllis Pearce) so many TV viewers were never aware of the similarities. There is a clip of Jill reviving part of her stage act in Wood & Walters in 1982.
As I grew up watching Hylda Baker, her actions and over reactions were fascinating to watch. It was the same for me with Lucille Ball. I may have been too young to have followed the complete storyline but I loved watching them both.
This show was full of great one liners. They don’t make em like this anymore. What a shame we need more great writers to produce show like this. My sides are still hurting.
That's likely because it was either never shown again or not very much since then, it's pretty old now and she died in '86. But it's also obvious how good she was in her 'prime'.
I seem to recall Hilda ended up in brinsworth house Twickenham,a home for actors who fall on hard times .Richard o Sullivan was there last I heard .Quite sad, really.
@@levimacdonald5188 was she on hard times. i read she had dementia. so sad. shouldnt have happened...the way the no talent comedians today get paid the high salaries ..its a crime
@@jessiejames7492 💯true hyldA baker lived near me plodder lane farnworth in Lancashire! Her chauffeur stole £2 thousand five-hundred pounds of her and when they got him only 45 pounds were left ! The git .. God bless her she had so much comedy timing in such a little lady.. Jean fergursson (marina) of lotsw impersonated hylda on the stage she's so much like her ! Theres a video on RU-vid with Jean on the Paul o Grady show circa 2005! .. worth taking a look at Jessie james ... best wishes from Levi 😊☺
@@levimacdonald5188 oh thanks. poor hylda. but as long as we have youtube she will never be forgotten. i will check out that paul o grady show. thank you. i love paul o grady. so funny as anything
Thanks for the information. I was wracking my brains to remember her name. She was in everything I ever watched, but the name eluded me. IMDB credits her, but her Wikipedia entry is rubbish.

Just been reading Barry Cryer's book of anecdotes and he says Hylda and Jimmy Jewel positively loathed each other and were very difficult to work with as a duo. Hylda often forgot her lines, and to cover she used her "Ohh you big girl's blouse" catchphrase. Once this happened on stage and Jewel turned to the audience and said: "I'm not going to help her"!
+Michael Woodhead - Yes, I have Barry's biography as well, I think it steamed from the fact that Hilda got a lot more money than Jimmy for their TV shows cos she wrote the songs and contributed a lot to the script.
Her facial expressions are brilliant 👏, when Lily says has he ya know rolling her eyes with this woman, just look at Hyldas expressions and how she says the words, then she says im septic about it ha ha ha lol!!tfhis is comedy gold and classic Hylda Baker , they broke the mould when they made Hylda!!!! Absolute legend she is, its a shame she developed alzheimers bless her x
I bought the boxset, I've laughed so much and I'm only 3 episodes in, if ya feeling down about anything watch this genius and Jimmy Jewel is funny as well, they bounce off each other in a love/hate relationship and Lily is funny as well and Walters silent expressions, when Lily said has it been a whirl wind romance, just like me and Walter and Nellie goes, ya got to hand it to him, he was a fast worker, is that right walter, who just stares back at her, then she says I don't think he can grasp it. I'll be laughing all the way through me box-set. I also got Not on your Nellie which I got on dvd from Amazon, they all were green flashing picture so sent it back and the second was as well. There were only 17 episodes, last series was only 3 because Hylda broke her foot on set. She sued them or should I say tried to, she was offered, I forget now and she turned it down but she got less as it went on so she would of been better off taking the 1st offer I think she tried to sue someone else before this time. Can't remember what now xx
