Still today songs go around -5 lufs Artist like illenium, odesza , Etc .... Porter Robinson..... The Pop Artists etc etc.... Their engineers still go towards -5lufs
you also can bring down the volume of your reference about -12dbfs (around -18LUFS) and anker your kick around -12db to have room for the master. thats how i compare my mixes to the mastered reference
Protools is like this by default. That being said, it is important to export things in the best possible format. I’m actually liking to remove all effects and outputting to mono :) I can make things stereo then and it sounds better
Remember the days when people could just make music, and it was filled with feeling, vibe and soul? Chasing loudness has limited producers and turned everything too technical and subject to limitations. Most music these days sounds so clinical and cold, and there are no doubt some amazing artists out there making some beautiful music that will never leave their bedroom as they can't compete with the loudness of other tracks.
For you a few decibels of clipping in the limiter are? Because I see some people hating -6 in pro l , other people say this is too much, and hit -3. I produce House and Deep House tracks. And really thank you for the content!
I never use reference track for EQ, sound mixing etc... because the reference is already has the final mastering. I would only use reference track for using mastering.
My favorite artist, Jari Mäenpää from Wintersun has had this dream of producing music which has this insane loud wall of sound, but it's also clean so you can hear all the different elements clearly. He started working on the "Time" album in 2006, but since he was unable to create the right sound for it, it had to be postponed. Eventually he decided to split the album in two parts and release the first part in 2012, but he was very dissatisfied with the result. In 2023 he finally was able to create the sound he was looking for and now Time II will be released in August this year and indeed it sounds incredible.
I totally agree I’m a fan of harddance but I’m getting more and more put off by it lately every producer wants to make it sound like a movie trailer and it’s way too serious sounding. all the fun is being sucked out off it. Also people are using way too much reverb now,it sounds muddy af
My problem is, for the amount of time and money (courses, lessons, plugins, sounds, etc) I’ve put into production, I feel like I’m way behind where I should be. Almost a year and a half in and I can’t finish a god damn song
Does anyone else want to build a parallel Music Industry or are we just going to keep taking it in the ass until music is completely commodified and hijacked by the technological sector? No one says it will be easy but I’m really tired of basing my career on “the easy route” and as artists I find it appalling that we would condemn ourselves to “easy” mode instead of “hardcore” mode. Cheers.
I’ll have you know I make dubstep and I get no artifacting or audible distortion at -0.5 lufs and 5.0 rms. Lol the secret is just smashing everything through a soft clipper. Also the way you mix your tracks is going to affect this as well I recomend mixing at 0db no headroom you’ll have an easier time this way
Because your not using a clipper in your mix, use clippers instead of compressors and you can get clean -3 lufs music. Compressors ruin sound, Michael Jacksons thriller album had no compression in it, all sounds where clipped at pre amps.
The only reason you might have mental disease regarding your production is because you fear the outcome. Enjoy the moments while you're in the flow, regardless of the end goal. Do it because your soul enjoys the experience. I've never released a single piece of music, but i enjoy fiddling as much as anyone's finished piece. Much respect to you for not giving up on your passion regardless of the hurdles.
We scroll... the length of the Empire State building? 😂 That's one of the funniest statistics I've heard, ever! Great content! Your points are right on target. Taking up music production was one of the best things I ever did for my mental health. I'm feeling better and better without even working on my thoughts and feelings, by simply producing. It works like a charm.
Neck pain i got was scary. Its was the headphones usage. Middle of my brain started aching like very oddly. When i told the doc. The reason was posture. My posture was bad. So anybody who’s reading. Look put for your posture. Plzz
It's clear that you have a lot of experience in this field Justin, and for that, thank you. As an artist duo, it's hard when we hit rock bottom to pick ourselves up and carry on doing what we love without thinking too much but as you say, focusing on each day as small victories is the essential and above all don't forget to live ❤
Damn, this channel always brings the best content! If you are into cold emailing, DoYouMail is the bomb. Affordable, easy setup, and it automates SPF/DKIM/DMARC. My inbox rates are through the roof. You guys should definitely make a video on it!

8:40 this happened to me after one of my biggest gigs ever to a crowd of 2k. The high was incredible then the low the next day was crushing. I've learned to look more so at the person I eventually became from the months of prep, practice, visualization, meditation, and calming my nerves for that gig. All about the journey bruddahhhhhhh
This video is incredible. This is one of the main reasons I love Cosmic Academy so much and have pointed so many of my friends to it. No other Academy out there that I know of is as focused on helping you being a well-balanced, mentally healthy human being as you approach your artist career. Much love Cosmic!!!
I’m suffering from anxiety and depression at the moment. A while ago I started going to a therapist. I’m still in therapy doing exposure. Thanks for putting the message out. Mental problems are rarely discussed when it comes to music producers. ❤
