I love '60s garage/pop, but man, for a $1,000 or $2,000 or whatever these go for, it's lower than lo-fi, granted that I've only heard the version uploaded to RU-vid, but very tuneful bunch of songs. I'd still call it garage based on the amateur quality of the recording. They were probably a suburban band influenced by The British Invasion. It's in line with the "Teenage Shutdown" series, which is Back From The Grave's take on the folkier and poppier unknowns from '60s. Good call on the Index similarities, one of the first things I thought of when I heard this. Gosh, I'd love to find an affordable copy, but will still with youtube for now.

When it comes to outsider music, it can be a little uneven for what appeals to me. I think you were big on Circuit Rider right? I gave my copy to Vinyl Rich, just never wanted to spin it. I think I like the backstories to folks like Higney & others like Kit Ream, Jerry Solomon, The Space Lady, etc. Some I really dig, others can fall flat. I like the strangeness of it all though. I need to give Higney another try as I don't remember it well. I think I only heard a track or two. Doesn't seem to be streamable, so I'm not sure how I'll hear it at the moment. But I am curious.
@seekingathread
@seekingathread 3 дня назад
Yes weirdly nothing is on youtube. Its as if Higney himself is running security on his own recordings. Taking them down. It's by no means a big favorite but taken as a whole I really love the approach. Bizarre turns and definitely a realness and amateurish quality. Out of those ones you mentioned, Space Lady is a favorite and I do love Solomon. who is interestingly not in the AA.

Very cool to see some Brenda Ray love in the VC! I just got turned on to her music recently. Downloaded the Naffi LP and Brenda & The Beach Balls 12" earlier this year, great great stuff. Been after those recs ever since but it's hard to find them for a reasonable price. A Naffi LP was just on ebay like last week. I was all set to win it with a hundred dollar bid but of course at the last minute some punk put in a winning bid of $112 😭 DAMN! So close....😔

Interesting story about the sellers. I love having a few of these tales to tell about collecting records. It’s half the fun for me. Lol. I feel so fortunate as I have been very lucky even when I took a bit of a gamble on a seller. Everything usually worked out to my advantage. Having the deluxe versions of Archives 1 and 2, and, like you, being “almost a completist”, I pulled the trigger on the deluxe of Archives Vol. 3. For me, Vol. 2 has been the most satisfying. I may have buyer’s remorse on 3 after listening to Takes 3 that I received in advance. On 1 listen it mostly left me pretty cold. Oh well, Neil’s my guy, as it were, and so I look forward to getting the box shortly. Thanks for your video.

Hey there. I actually enjoyed the Takes CD more than I thought I would but there was definitely some tracks on there I didn't need. The Devo collab on Hey Hey My My was pretty special.
