I’m always very happy to see people talk about the OCS, the live concert LP its very beautiful. I think their music evolution is beautiful and chaotic. From folk to garage, psych and almost trashy psychedelic. Mikal Cronin (ty’s bass player) is also a personal favorite. All his solo stuff is beautifully lo-fi and easy to get.

I dig Cronin for sure too but never feel the urgency to buy his records. I'm pretty much an Ocees completist though I did not care for their last one, sold it.

Great video. Great topic. Also a pretty big White Fence fan. From what I understand Tim doesn't make new music. He is doing his art full time. I believe his partner is still Cate Le Bon. He lives out in the CA desert. White Fence just opened for Ty Segall in LA in March so maybe Ty can pull him into the studio. There are a lot of artists influenced by Syd Barrett. Another I think of is Anton, Brian Jonestown Massacre.

Imagine if Syd Barrett was still in Pink Floyd? If he didn’t fry his brain as much, I wonder what they would’ve sounded like? Would Roger Waters play as much of a role on later albums? Cool video as always Dom you’re killing it in the VC with this one and the Acid Archives

Thank you Dean. I tend to think he would've probably tamed down too, as we all do in older ages. However perhaps he was never meant to last. A star can only burn that bright for so long. I do wonder about Syd on Dark Side Of the Moon. Ha! That would've been weird.

Good stuff. I have family perfume 1 & 2 by white fence/tim presley. I saw OH SEES on their Drop Tour in 2014 here in germany in a tiny club. One of the best and most energetic live shows i ever went to. THEE HOUNDS OF FOGGY NOTION i like very much. I bought a lot of trouble in mind/ mexican summer/captured tracks and castle face until 2015. Early flighless records releases are also pretty interesting apart from the hyped King Gizz i think. Babe rainbow (first ep & lp), pipe eye, leah senior,murlocs... Have a nice weekend! Cheers

That Morgan Delt sounds really interesting, Dom. This is the sort of direction I thought Kevin Parker was headed after the first Tame Impala record. I just picked up the Cleaners From Venus Dawn Chorus comp to dip my toe into his extensive catalog, power pop-y in a good way. Barrett-inclined artists are right up my street, so very much appreciate you highlighting some bands I need to check out. Thanks!

"Fried beauty" is a brilliant way to describe the music of Barrett. You've likely already read Ron Chapman's wonderful book, A Very Irregular Head. If not, I'd recommend it for the wealth of pre-PF and post-PF Barrett. That is a wonderful list of albums that you put together. Most of which, I'm not familiar with. The first band that always come to mind for me when thinking of Barrett long-term influence is David Roback and Kendra Smith's wonderful band Opal. We have spoken about them previously. Both of their albums; Happy Nightmare, Baby and Early Recordings have that broken, heartfelt psychedelic folk vibe that is such an important part of Barrett's solo recordings. And, of course, the band also took their name from Barrett's song, Opel. I would add that Roback and Smith's previous band, Clay Allison also uses a similar sound on their one single before they became, Opal. The other two that I think of are the Legendary Pink Dots and some of the solo records by John Fruscuante. Certainly, Fruscuante was inspired by Barrett. Particularly on Niandra LasDes and Usually Just a T-Shirt. The records lo-fi, ramshackle stream-of-consciousness would have given Syd some satisfaction that his music would eventually find the audience he was searching for. Great topic on an artist that I feel has not also been treated with the respect at he was due. Cheers! Shawn

man o man how can you mention Dave Roback and Opal and not mention The Rain Parade an AMAZING early '80s L A Paisley Underground group their first and second LPs are ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐and Mazzy Star with Hope Sandoval not my cup of tea however a lot of people do like them for early Syd/Pink Floyd I think Dead Meadow is very lysergic
@seekingathread
@seekingathread 4 месяца назад
Interesting call on Frusciante. There is definitely something in his playing that is reminiscent of Barrett. Can't pin what it is but some of those solo records of his are insane. Pink Dots too does make sense. Of course there is a psychedelic quality to what Roback and Co were doing. Perhaps more hazy but no-less cosmic. Nice to see this topic touch off a bunch of comments and thoughts!

@the-vinyl-dreamscape5084 4 месяца назад
@@hanskloss1331 Of course, those are all great bands that I enjoy very much. I used the Opal example just because the name of the band had come directly from Roback’s admiration for Syd Barrett. But certainly all of his projects have the Barrett influence. Including the all-star Paisley Underground project Rainy Day. Thank you for pointing those out. It’s so sad that we lost Roback in 2020. At least Hope Sandoval has continued to make and play interesting music.

Dom, when I first heard Beck's album, '' Mellow Gold'', I thought it was a direct hommage to Syd Barrett. To me, Beck's ''Loser'' is as good as Syd's ''Octopus''. Morgan Delt is my favorite Barrett ''sound- alike'' that you played.

Listen,Barrett's 'sound' can be found in real small doses by even established legends of music and we all know the names but there has been no musician before and no-one to this day that can be compared to him. Syd Barrett was a one off and does not belong in any musical bracket as he touched all genres in a very small amount of time and is irreplaceable.
@seekingathread
@seekingathread 4 месяца назад
I don't know if he touched all genres but he was indeed very special. But the artists mentioned here I think are specifically trying to emulate him, in sound, aesthetic and even vocals. Which you might just call them copycats for but I think it takes talent and skill to do it. Its simply a way to get "more" Syd in a way. cheers!

For me the English singer, songwriter, guitarist and producer Richard Hawley, is probably one of the most talented accomplished musician. His album that fits perfectly in comparison with Syd Barrett, Standing At The Sky’s Edge, a contemporary psychedelic album. Though his music is a lot more varied on all his albums!
