My mother, a Londoner, said kids would run around the neighborhood asking " a penny for the guy". For materials to make the effigy. It would later be burned in a bonfire, sometimes later I think fireworks. This would have been 1930-40s.
whenever I see the woman and young man with the fruit cart, I can feel the pain in his cheek.. he looks so uncomfortable through the years. I didn't look at the date of publication of these pictures, but it seems like yesterday I saw them. I don't mind if this collection is a repeat - theres usually something that catches my eye I didn't notice previously. thanks 40 Historical Files..I appreciate the views into the past. God bless everyone!
I am having a problem reading your blurb and then scouring the changes or no changes in each picture. I am getting slower as I age and would appreciate you slowing down from one blurb to another. Love your topics, for I am a history junky. Happy Trails.
I believe that I read that the car in the bombing during the troubles did belong to that man but he and his child were not injured. There were a lot of injuries that day and some fatalities but the man and his son were not injured I don’t think. I’m gonna look it up now. If I’m wrong you will never hear it from me.
I swear...it's SO RARE that you see young women or girls who actually HAVE figure these days! Most of them are built like 11 year old BOYS...straight up and down, not a curve in sight (See Charles Bronson and Jill Ireland picture)! Not to mention flat as a short stack of pancakes in the "chest" department!! Someone once did a post on exactly that subject...of course that was when you could actually take advantage of the time when we had our Freedom of Speech in tact! I wish I could remember who downloaded it and when!! It's flat-out (excuse the pun!) embarrassing!!
What I find particularly fascinating is that many of the buildings decimated by WWII were repaired or rebuilt to look like the original! Dachau made me cry; what a horrible legacy.
Lambeth High Street, 1848, at 17:20 I found the same spot today on google maps. Remarkably, the pub is still there. Rebuilt but still called The Windmill. www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.4929407,-0.1202993,3a,75y,16.44h,100.58t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sU1l9MTd-WTSSdGmFBKwoQw!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?coh=205409&entry=ttu
