Ha una voce musicalissima e piacevolissima anche quando parla. Una voce come la sua è una combinazione di suoni che non ho più avuto modo di udire, un miracolo della natura che ci ha deliziato per troppo poco tempo.

A singer who sings with passion is wonderful. You can hear it on a recording but when they sing it live, you can see the passion in both their face and in their voice

It is interesting to note that his speaking voice, in English, became much darker in tone, as he got older as well as his singing voice, except for some reason when he spoke in Italian where his tone was still light as it is when he is speaking in English here. This is strange I think.

Operatic History bears out that there were THREE GREAT TENORS, ENRICO CARUSO, BENIAMINO GIGLI and MARIO LANZA., the latter two studied with ENRICO ROSATI, the finest Vocal Teacher of that era - whom None since then can match.

For me Mario Lanza is the most expressive singer in the world .. .others may be technically a better tenor but as far as expressiveness, in facial expression, in voice, in body language, in his eyes, etc., nobody is better .

"Every word I sing, I sing as though it were my last on earth." There you go, that is what made him great. Sometimes opera types get so caught up in proper technique or who had the biggest voice or could hit the highest note that they lose track of what the art was meant for in the first place...to communicate the heart to the listener. I call that operatic snobbery or operatic legalism.

It is truly amazing that a singer who passed away so long ago still captures the imagination of millions. It is a testimony to Mario Lanza's fantastic talent. It was a splendid but short lived career filled with passion and success and some difficult times. At the end, Lanza was back on his way up and was among the most popular entertainers of his era. I recommend reading A KID FROM PHILADELPHIA, MARIO LANZA, THE VOICE OF THE POETS, and to listen to him as you read the beautiful essays that are a homage to a star who is still with us and will always be with us.

you can’t say that unless you have proof and you met him. I’ve met people that had reputations as terrifying people who where very kind and loyal to me and people with opposite reputations who stabbed me in the back at the first opportunity. So reputations count for nothing especially when there is a lot of jealousy and money floating around.

Mario apparently was afraid if he became to proficient in studying site reading, and music theory,it would diminish his natural music instincts. He was under a lot of pressure, from many gifted and learned musicians he worked with,to study reading music and perhaps piano. He accomplished quite a lot mostly learning by ear. Some singers who did become proficient in reading music well, were married to the exact note value for each word and sounded at times unnatural. ian kaye Sorry Ian, I have to disagree with you again. Many great tenor voices start out gifted and over time study, then become more proficient as Lanza did after studying with various coaches and teachers

ursmue1937 This was a truly one of the greatest compliments given to one the greatest by one of the greatest. My humble opinion, Lanza, Caruso and Pavarotti not in any particular order. I don’t believe anyone is still living today that heard Caruso perform live. As wonderful as remastering of music has become, the process of bringing the true pure essence of the voice can’t be measured on recordings of Caruso. No one today truly knows how great he really was.
