A singer who sings with passion is wonderful. You can hear it on a recording but when they sing it live, you can see the passion in both their face and in their voice
For me Mario Lanza is the most expressive singer in the world .. .others may be technically a better tenor but as far as expressiveness, in facial expression, in voice, in body language, in his eyes, etc., nobody is better .
In the HISTORY of the ART OF SINGING, The THREE GREATEST TENORS are ENRICO CARUSO, BENIAMINO GIGLI and MARIO LANZA, the latter two who studied with the FINEST VOICE TEACHER of that ERA, ENRICO ROSATI. NO SINGERS of THEIR QUALITY EXIST TODAY.
I love his intelligence--not just the technical voice but his INTELLIGENCE of really singing the song, interpreting those lyrics from the heart. singers take note!
Mario Lanza Puts all his feelings into everything he does whether in singing , in acting and talking-no matter what he does he always imparts his innermost thoughts to everyone and so it is no surprise that he is one of the most beloved performers of all time-just adore the golden-voiced genious of song!

I'm not saying anyone is better than anyone else. Just saying each one has their own specific qualities. If you think otherwise, that is your right too. Live and let live , OK ?

Thank you so much for sharing! Msrio has been my idol since I was 8, and from the moment I saw The Great Caruso and Serenade, I just went on collecting his records. He remains in my heart forever.
Mario's speaking voice was just as clear and as precise as his singing voice, I have never, ever heard such a crystal clear perfectly pristine speaking voice. The was no chance of misunderstanding a word he said. The man truly was Gifted of God.
He absolutely means what he is saying. I found it vastly apparent when he mentioned that he sings each word in the lyrics with feeling every time I listen to his version of Lamento di Federico. Mi vai tanto male ( I hurt so much). He can just break your heart.
He breaks your heart not only with his glorious singing voice but his speaking voice, as well. We are blessed to have these videos so his legacy lives on. He & his golden voice are sorely missed. May he RIP.

"In the day", I sang professionally, but certainly not to the standard of a Mario Lanza (aside from the fact that I'm a woman) Soap Fan - I don't mean to be too inquisitive - but are you Italian? I am - and was raised with my parents and grandparents until I was 16. I learned some Italian, sang in Italian, but am by no means fluent. If you understand Italian, was I correct in my translation of "Mi vai tanto male" to "I hurt so much." Thank you for your reply. It was nice of you to take the time.

Yes, I was a lyric soprano in my younger days & thru the years, singing for social functions, church services, weddings, etc. My father played the accordion & I would sing along as a child. He & my family enjoyed radio/tv programs of the many music artists. My late dear husband was a music educator so we both had a love for it. I am Italian, but regretfully, not fluent in the language. Checked with a family member about the translation & it was close to the meaning (something terrible). SrSoapFan Hi Rose, We really do have a lot in common. I am an alto and sang in a band for several years - at weddings, engagements and Knights of Columbus Councils. My singing nowadays is in my church choir. I recently lost my wonderful husband as well. He loved music and was extremely supportive of my musical endeavors.. He actually purchased a vocal booth for me to place within our home. I use Karaoke CDs and record to a CD in the booth. He always wanted me to make a CD of songs for him, but sadly, we ran out of time. I am in the process of making that CD for him, to place where he now lies, with a copy I plan to put in a Tribute Scrapbook Album I am creating in his honor. I miss him so much!!! . It was also my father who originally encouraged me as well --- he played the guitar and taught me. And I agree with you Rose - RU-vid is a wonderful resource for the greats of music, like Mario. ursmue1937 This was a truly one of the greatest compliments given to one the greatest by one of the greatest. My humble opinion, Lanza, Caruso and Pavarotti not in any particular order. I don’t believe anyone is still living today that heard Caruso perform live. As wonderful as remastering of music has become, the process of bringing the true pure essence of the voice can’t be measured on recordings of Caruso. No one today truly knows how great he really was.
"Every word I sing, I sing as though it were my last on earth." There you go, that is what made him great. Sometimes opera types get so caught up in proper technique or who had the biggest voice or could hit the highest note that they lose track of what the art was meant for in the first place...to communicate the heart to the listener. I call that operatic snobbery or operatic legalism.
Mario apparently was afraid if he became to proficient in studying site reading,and music theory,it would diminish his natural music instincts.He was under a lot of pressure,from many gifted and learned musicians he worked with,to study reading music and perhaps piano.He accomplished quite a lot mostly learning by ear.Some singers who did become proficient in reading music well,were married to the exact note value for each word and sounded at times unnatural. ian kaye Sorry Ian, I have to disagree with you again. Many great tenor voices start out gifted and over time study, then become more proficient as Lanza did after studying with various coaches and teachers
ian kaye Lanza studied with Rosati, which Lanza drove nuts because Lanza would not do his studies, showed up late and with a hangover at time and refused to learn solfeggi and you make up some kind of cockamamie excuse. OMG, you should pull your ridiculous comment
