Hello, How long will the deep black color last after waxing/mineral oil is applied?
@4jeg

Use a drying oil like hemp oil and it won’t “evaporate” Natural as well. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-51JMxEQQhnA.htmlsi=UStXOx7q-5LA6Mtk

Mineral oil doesn’t “evaporate.” It gets soaked into the outer layer of the stone. Where the stone is softer and has more talcum, it soaks in more.

can you get soapstone in an extremely high polish state?

I have soapstone countertops. What changes the color after oiling is... soap. And water. The two things in abundance around a sink. I’ve heard that soapstone will naturally turn black over time. I do oil it and carefully wipe/buff off the excess oil. I wouldn’t trade my soapstone, but if I oiled it only once a year it would be a very uneven gray.

@philindeblanc

Soapstone is often 40% or more talc....from what I read. Pumice is usually pink I think, and is used in polishing metals, like gold.

It’s not a stone that can be shined like granite. When oiled, it’s initially shiny and then becomes matte.

What I like about the soapstone is this, with just a wee bit of sanding, the etching left behind by the lemon, even scratches can be sanded out.....can't do that w/ granite or quartz. I can't wait to get to remodeling my kitchen, I'm gonna go w/ soapstone.

This fella's easy on the eyes :o) AND this is a great video on soapstone, which I hope to install in my Texas county style home! I clean with bleach periodically so I'll check out the next video on cleaning to learn if diluted bleach is ok to use.
@philindeblanc
@philindeblanc 2 года назад
I think you can as soap stone is used in chem labs, and is non absorbant. But for cleaning, straight bleach is pretty radical. I would use a 4 distilled water to 1 part bleach. Vinager is another great natural cleaner, and you can get those in much stronger concentrations vs the regular 4 to 6%.

In the beginning he named the black one in the left, quartz, black absolute honed quartz. Later he kept calling it granite. The quartz I'm surprised did worst than the granite. The red wine stain was minimal on the granite and that was left on for days.

It's not the calcium in marble that causes it to react with acids in lemon juice, it's the carbonates (marble being metamorphised limestone). Maybe you meant to say calcite - the mineral, not calcium - the metal.

istone store --this video's subject isn't about the price of soapstone--it's about how it stains or doesn't stain compared to some other natural stone products. Regarding comments on the video quality--considering it was done in this gentleman's warehouse, I think it was fine. It's not a "movie" for goodness sake, it's just a quick teaching video. Give the guy a break. Regarding comments about the hazing caused by the lemon on the soapstone. I, too, see a bit of hazing, but if it is indeed there, I believe it would be quickly remedied with some mineral oil or wax. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I don't believe anything will fix permanent etching on granite or marble (other than professional repolishing?). I don't have any natural stone products in my house, yet, but hope to soon. A designer friend warned me that while white marble is so popular, it does stain easily from typical kitchen ingredients, such as red wine. (Limestone, too, isn't great in most used kitchens.) I'm certain he chose a white marble sample along with the other samples because it and they are popular in today's kitchens. I often see white marbles used in high-end kitchens, but I've never seen (among my friends) a dark or black marble. One friend has honed black granite. It is pretty, but the honing makes it more susceptible to problems--even more so than a highly polished version. Quartz (the man-made "version") is very easy to maintain, but I believe if it is honed, it, too, is higher maintenance than if it is used in a polished state. Frankly, I hope I do end up with soapstone: nothing beats its silky and "soapy" feel from the talc content. Thank you, Dorado Stone, for several informative videos! All the best from the Midwest....

Great video that has given me confidence make my dream of soapstone counters in my kitchen a reality. I've been concerned (as my contractor's designer suggested) that it would be too high maintenance, but being able to use most any cleaning product and just mineral oil, dry wax, and sandpaper, if necessary, is not that difficult. The fact I don't have to use a strong chemical (like a granite sealer) or have it done by professionals is also a plus.

Hey Bo, you may need to re-do this video if you wanted to show that your company's soap stone is superior in the tests. I clearly saw a hazing caused by the lemon on the soap stone. To add, it wasn't fair to compare different color stones and you have to know that. In addition, someone said your audio has some echo. I could understand ok. But FYI, I made a close up video in my kitchen and used my bluetooth. It cut down on the echo considerably. However, I can't get to far with my B.T. before it has static connection issues.

I think this video was done well and with good intentions. For those that are saying they see etching on soapstone, I too see a light area where the lemon was; however, this is not damage to the stone itself. This is where the patina was removed. The patina is not the natural finish of the stone. It is an enhancement. You do not have to oil soapstone. It is simply done for aesthetic preference. Nonetheless, oiling the surface again with mineral oil will easily blend this out. If you recall, soapstone was widely used (and still is today) for chemistry labs- largely due to its inertness to acids. For those saying they should have compared the same color, that defeats the entire concept of this video. The stone itself is not the control group. The products are. The dependent variable is the effect the products he introduces them to have on different types of stone. So, he is not wanting to compare oil stains vs lemon juice, necessarily, on the same type of stone. He is wanting more to demonstrate to you how one type of stone compares to the other against each common household item i.e. how lemon juice will (or will not effect) honed black granite (which is technically basalt or gabbro and not granite) vs. white calcium-based marble vs true granite vs soapstone. As for the "Buy Quartz or Solid Surface" comment, I suggest you perform your own experiment and add Heat Resistance to the test.

@MySonRyanSykes 12 лет назад
Where do I start... 1. For this to be scientific, meaning unbiased, you need to have the same colors. How ridiculous it is that you used white marble vs. your dark soapstone. 2. The lemon clearly etched your soapstone. You are either delusional, or you're a soapstone selling charlatan. Probably both, definitely the later. Bad bad business practice will leave you out of business. SHAME ON YOU and BIG THUMBS DOWN!
@bbhurst65

I would guess he chose white marble because it's far more common in high-end kitchens than black marble. The granite looks to be a common variety used and demonstrated how red wine would stain the lighter areas. The honed black granite was a good choice because many people will choose it as an alternative and a similar look to the soft sheen of soapstone. I don't, personally, think it is necessary to use the same colors to prove his point. He chose common natural stone countertop surfaces in a simple demonstration. If you want a more "scientific" study, find one on line or consult Consumer Reports, which some might argue isn't necessarily "scientific." I've gathered stone samples and quartz (e.g. Caesarstone) sample and put cosmetics, oils, mustards, wine, etc. in my own little "unscientific" tests hardly worthy of a grade school science fair and determined which ones would hold up to my own kitchen and bathroom habits better than others in order to make a good decision. I've been in hotel bathrooms with beautiful, white quartz counters (not sure of brand) that have stained terribly with just the smallest amount of pink-colored (powder blush) makeup sitting on the counter for a nanosecond. Of course, I felt awful that I caused a stain, but there was nothing I could do to fix it!
@duramax78

MySonRyanSykes, you're right. First of all, any acid substance, if left for hours let alone days, will be corrosive on any material. That's the 'chemical' properties of acidic substances. On top of that, white marble(which I love especially the one with pink veins) is not for people who are not going to clean up the mess they create, right away. Either they(OCD) should keep the kitchen clean or rich enough to keep it clean all the time. I have some marble kitchen items. I have used tea, coffee, turmeric etc. Nothing happened because I clean then and there. I never leave any utensils in the sink unwashed.

This was so informative! We are trying to decide on a countertop... I love marble, but the wine and lemon stains are intense. The soapstone does look like it did have a slight effect from the lemon. There's a bit of a cloud at the same spot where the lemon was placed. I can't tell if that was already there. My biggest concern about soapstone is just how dark it is. We have a 95" peninsula in a U shaped kitchen. Thank you for the great demonstration!
