@@jinks6410 this model is specifily a monoband unit for 220 mhz. They sell these units in 2m, 70cm, and 220 mhz all under the same model number "th-9000d. So if you shop on amazon you have to make sure you chose the right band you want to use it for. So to make a short answer to your question a little longer....no it cannot be unlocked to operate outside its designated bandwith. It is purely a monoband radio.
no, as an operator it is your responsibility to know where the privileges in your license class ends. However, the radio will not transmit outside the dedicated amateur radio bands. its good to learn the privileges within each band as it various slightly with the different modes that can be operated and where those modes are operated within each band. good question though. thank you.
Whole heartedly agree. I won one of these radios. It's a bog standard dual band radio with waterproofing and not a single thing else. There is nothing particularly impressive about it, whether you are talking performance, features, appearance... It's not a **bad** radio but unfortunately, the best you can say about it, is that it is a "serviceable" dual-band HT. The main thing wrong with it is the price. The price is flat-out wonky. If I had not won it, no way I would ever buy one. I would be hard pressed to pay over $75-ish for **any** HT with a direct-conversion receiver. In my opinion, once an HT price exceeds $120-ish, it really should have a superhet receiver and if it doesn't, there needs to be a **very strong and compelling reason** why it doesn't. Bottom line: This radio is a good, standard, no frills, very basic, dual-band HT with waterproofing. However, Icom's price for this radio is downright offensive for what you get.
The Icom T10 is a VHF and UHF portable FM transceiver, not VHF only. The Icom T10 is on sale now for $95 off the regular price. The quality of the Icom radio is probably significantly higher than the Chinese radios. Some people don't need to receive outside the ham bands, although the Icom T10 also receives the FM broadcast by band.
@@chrisgarcia9320 ypu have to have licenses for both. A ham license doesnt give you unlimited access to different frequencies aloccated for different purposes. Ham radio is a game changer for sure, however some people are opposed to learning and taking a test for a radio license. So long story short....you van only legally transmit on gmrs frequencies with a gmrs license. Same with ham radio. But ham radio has different tiers of licenses.
Thanks, i do have my GMRS license. Im thinking of buying the same radio you got on the video the Icom 5100a. I just want to know if the icom can transmit in both ham andi gmrs frequencies? thanks again..
You provide better information than most other TH 7800 reviews.... I won one of these in a raffle so I was looking for 'how to operate' this model..... Unfortunately, and I don't know why....You decided to give the review while on the road so the background noise was distracting and sometimes difficult to understand what you were saying..... Perhaps re-do this when you are stationary?? 73
I had just gotten started in the hobby when i made this video. I didnt have a power supply at home at the time. I still love this radio even though i eventually sold it (which i do regret). But it is one of the easiest full power mobile units to program. Im sorry i left more questions than answers for you. Feel free to look me up on qrz.com and shoot me an email. I can tell you all i can remember about it. The owners manual for this radio wasnt bad at all. But i do realize the need to see things rather than just read them. For that i do apologise. As i continue in the world of youtube i am starting to gain more experience to show more in my videos. I hope i can be of more help to you in the future
You’re really going to compare this radio to a cheap Chinese radio?! Sorry they can say what they want about ratings those Chinese radios are 💩! Ratings aren’t the same as actual tests and that’s what Icom did, actually tested it. Barn doors for receivers and splatter boxes on transmit. I’m as cheap as the next guy but I refuse to buy this Chinese junk! Also for this weekend only I’m gathering DX Engineering has them at $149 & before that they had them for $169.
@@farmhousehamradio4774 maybe I don’t, I’ve only watched this one video from your channel as I was searching for videos pertaining to the Icom IC-T10 & this was one of them. I certainly don’t mean any disrespect just stating facts. Another problem with radios that do so many bands in a small package like this, is they’re the jack of all trades and master of none. They possibly make good starter radios, but not much beyond that.
@@truckinguy92 im just getting started in the hobby about 3 years ago. It is for more budget minded operators. Handhelds are a big deal for alot of beginners, so im aways looking for makers like , icom and yaesu to put out radios for tight budgeted people or people on fixed incoms to afford. Your statement is true, you cant compare the chinese radios to these brands, however, for what they wanted when this radio was initially released seemed ridiculous for a radio that cant recieve but 1 band at a time, and has no aprs or gps built in. Its argued that "these radios are built like tanks and are way better than other makers" which in itself is true. But when it comes down to the nitty gritty i would much rather have my 60 dollar radio in the field than my $250 radio. I wouldnt wanna scratch or lose my $250 radio....i could care less about the cheaper radio breaking or getting lost. Believe me i get paying for quality as i have a yaesu ft 710 aess hf radio for my worldwide rig. But out and about? My cheaper anytones and tyt's are my radios of choice. But because i am on a budget. But finally, i still prefer yaesu over icom any day of the week. But thats personal preference. So...that featureless radio? The t10? Was overpriced for what it is. If you can find it brand new now for $160?! Then that is worth it and is where it should have started at that price point to begin with
I held off on the power pole thing for a while, but eventually, I got the tool and now I power pole everything. The thing that pushed me over the edge was when I bought the Elecraft K3, which uses power poles by default.
Great video! I learned a lot. I am new to the hobby. Just curious, can you change the colour of the waterfall from diabolical red to something different? Is it customizable? I was recommended this radio but I don't like the red waterfall.

@@farmhousehamradio4774 Sorry - my eyes finally adjusted to the ALL CAP and I was able to read the rest of your comment. After receiving the radio this week, it only took me a couple hours to figure out all (maybe only most) the programming without the software. But then again, I'm a technology professional. Eventually, I'll get a Windows virtual computer and will mess with the software, but in the mean time, the radio programming is simple enough. Lol - let me know if you have any questions!
@@farmhousehamradio4774 LOL - lighten up. It's not that bad! Its just a little criticism. Seeing that you don't know how the caps lock key works, its all the more impressive that you learned how to program your radio and even make a youtube video! Well done!
I have 2 of 2M version of these that I got several years ago. They have an "alarm feature" that likes to go off randomly. When they do it, you may need to clean your shorts. They have been living in a box of junk for the last few years and will stay there until I find a fix for this. My wife was ready to put a bullet in the one in our truck when it went off on her. Fortunately I haven't had the dreaded dead battery but I did come out to find the thing wailing away one day. If anyone knows of a fix for this I'm interested.
I like my 7800 but not for mobile use, I don't like it in my mobile because the mic plug is on the passenger side, you have to install it sideways so the mic plug faces the back instead of the passenger side, and I would use it in the winter either
I just bought this radio yesterday (DX in Sparks, NV). I'm brand new to HF. I just upgraded to General about a month ago. I've been a ham for almost 30 years but I've been off for over 20 years and never got into HF. Long story but new I'm ALL-IN. I'm looking forward to getting this radio set up tomorrow. I've watched at least a zillion videos on the radio (at LEAST a zillion!) and decided this was the 'entry-level' radio for me. Thank you for your video. It helped me understand a few more things.
No problem. And if you would like, join us on the Friendy Bunch every evening starting at 7pm on 75meters. Frequency is 3.919 lower sideband. Saturday nights at 8pm is dedicated to kids which lasts about an hour. But its a great ragchew group and ive been talking with them about a year now. Glad you found my video helpful
sounds like your tone board may have gone bad. you can try doing a master reset on the unit, but if that doesn't work a new radio may be in the works for you. also with this radio, avoid an extension speaker.
I am thinking about a new HT being a new ham operator as of last year. I was looking at the t10 because I purchased an icom 2730a for my truck and I absolutely love it. I was wanting to try to get a HT of the same brand. Yes it is expensive for the features you get, maybe to expensive IDK. What appealed to me was the waterproofing because I like to fish and hunt and do other out door activities. I also like that the keypad is lit so you could quickly type in a freq for simplex if repeaters were down and the power was out.The reason I was considering this HT is yes the name and I was hoping it was better quality than Chinese. I would like to see some real world range testing of this HT vs other brands. Maybe some durability testing as well. I feel this radio is NOT a get out and have fun type of HT. Its more of a this thing is going to work and be dependable when you need it type of radio. But maybe Im wrong and I will continue to explore my options. Thank you for the video and 73!
Can you tell me how many frequencies it will scan at a time I travel all over the country I'm assuming I need 10,000 frequencies will it scan the areas that I'm in and draw from those list of frequencies. Or will it only accept 1000 frequencies at a time. Thx
It will scan by channels programmed or by band. I think you need to really understand more about bands and frequencies before trying to use this radio. Its better to program repeaters than individual frequencies with the exception of the national calling frequencies. Also the radio, when hooked to a gps antenna , can be set up in such a way to alert you to repeaters that you may be near and you can tune to them via the preprogrammed list on the memory card. It will only accept 1000 channels. Based on your question i hope its safe to assume you are not an amateur radio operator. That being said, you can still own the radio, but you need to do the research on how ham radios work and how to program them. That will help you better understand what it is this radio is truely capable of
I should've been more descriptive. I am a Ham Radio operator. I'm new to it about a year or so. my main question is how many channels will that radio hold. Or will I have to keep putting in channels as I drive around the country. I'm assuming there's 10,000 channels nationwide maybe there's 20,000 I don't know but whatever the number is will that RADIO hold all of them And then scan that bank of channels as I travel around. Or will I have to add channels to it as I travel. I keep hearing that it will only hold 1000 channels that's not going to come close nationwide. The radio I have now holds 800 frequencies and that doesn't come close as I travel around from California to New York. I just want to input all of the channels (frequencies) one time and then let the radio do all the searching do all the work. I'm tired of playing with RepeaterBook 10 times a day as I travel around. Thanks W7GUM 73
@@stacyjourdain4435 just learn to differentiate between frequencies and channels and you will be golden. I never used programming software for mine and entered everything manually. it would be beneficial if you have time to look up repeaters on repeaterbook by zipcode or state to help you program them in. A computer would be best and another ham radio operater in your area may be able to help you do it. but either way, you will (as with any radio) have to do some of your own programming for it. the d-star part of it is the most tricky. i would try to give you more information about it, but i no longer have that radio.
Well, thanks I was hoping to finally find somebody that understood it. I'm really contemplating getting the radio but if I have to constantly add channels, that's what I'm trying to avoid. I know how to download the channels and upload them on radios. I've got three other radios that I do it on, I just would like to know how many channels this radio holds anyways thanks for your help. I'll keep asking around for somebody who would know. Even Ham Radio outlet guys they're not sure. I just hate to spend the $500 and then still end up every two or three days uploading more frequencies or "channels" . 73
Can you please post a link of the video you are referring to? I’m trying to just have 2 similar radios like that talk to each other over DMR in simplex mode and I’m failing pretty bad. No repeater, no hot spot, just plain radio to radio by simplex and you said this video is coming from another that explains how to do it but I can’t find it. Thanks in advance.
this was my original video. if you still cant figure it out, you can look me up on qrz.com and contact me via email. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-upSk8tE600c.html
Thanks for the link. I was able to figure it out today and works BUT there is no way I can get it to work with Split. Only works having both radios in the same frequency. I will like to Radio 1 be like A-B and Radio 2 be B-A. So when try it the system believes I’m in a repeater or something and doesn’t work. I think is not possible in DMR, and nobody has posted anything about that, Google can’t find anything.
@@angelscomputers it wont work split. but using different color codes and timeslots make it more private then normal. simplex is simplex. using one frequency. now you can transmit on one and monitor on another but it defeats the purpose. but its cool to experiment.it can work split if both radios are programmed identically but reverse of each other. hard to explain but i think you will understand.
this guy needs to clean up his bedroom before going on youtube comparing a 2730 vs a hand held mobile vs portability icom vs chinese knockoffs apples to oranges
Apparently you are a hater. i am in the middle of renovations in this home and this is the place for my ham shack at the moment. my videos are geared toward budget minded hams that are just starting in the hobby. So that being said, if you don't like my opinions, to bad. instead of being a tool, why don't you comment something useful before you try to embarrass others to make yourself feel better. if you don't know circumstances, and want to criticize others, look in the mirror first. And lastly, Icoms are great radios as I had stated, but this particular model lacks features to cost. you missed the point of the video. thank you for your insanely stupid insight. Merry Christmas
My father in law/my elmer surprised me with a 710 field for Christmas. The catch : can't use until i get my general after the holidays. Until then I'm content on my FT-890 KQ4IHG
I have thoroughly enjoyed this radio so far. I have found things i wish were better but for the cost, i am extremely hapoy with it. If you ever hear me on the air, give me a shout. Christmas is only 4 days away now. You can find me on the Friendly Bunch conversation group most nights on 3.919.000 mhz. They are on 7 nights a week everyday 365 days a year. Hope to hear ya on the air and thanks for watching
No...i know its dirty. It was a fun little radio but let me say this. When i lost audio, its because the signal shut down my mic. That never happens with radios the are more specturaly pure.
I hope you like the new 710. I got the same radio and love it. Talking on the .73 repeater about it caused Bryan and Sean to do a HRO road trip. But they had to one up me and get the ftdx10. I love the monitor feature. I am able to keep the display in front of me near my computer displays.
